353.0. "Treadmill questions" by SOFBAS::RHODES () Thu Sep 08 1988 17:31

    I'd like to solicit your opinions on treadmills, for those of you
    who have used them.

    I'm considering buying a treadmill, but I don't want to spend the money
    on a piece of equipment that will sit around collecting dust.
    My questions are:

    1. If you had one, would you use it regularly? Why or why not?

    2. Is it boring? In other words, can you stay on it long enough
        to get a good workout or do you get bored first?
        (BTW, I think stationary cycling is a tedious bore.)

    4. Are motorized treadmills better than non-motorized ones?
        (I've read that non-motorized ones require a "no hands"
         technique that can be difficult learn.)

    5. What features would YOU look for in a treadmill?

    6. Some have handlebars only in front (like a bike) while others
        have handlebars that go down both sides of the running surface.
        Which type do you think is better?

    Not quite what you asked, but my rowing machine is in the same room
    with the tv, and I watch taped stuff while exercising, otherwise
    I'd be bored out of my skull.

353.2I Love Them!CIVIC::WEBERFri Sep 09 1988 12:5416
    Hi,

    Well I use the treadmill that is provided her in the MKO Life Center.
    I put a tape in (I'm into teaching tapes as apposed to music currently)
    and just go. It's great. One thing I really like about it is that
    it keeps my walking consistant. When I walk outside I often find
    myself slowing down. I have never used the non-motorized ones but
    really like to motorized one. The one I use here lets me know the
    speed I'm walking, time and distance. I als like the fact that is
    has, in essence, a bar that goes from side to side so I can hold
    onto the front or the sides. I like that because I find I often
    want to change my arm positions. Are you near MKO at all? It's worth
    trying one out for a while before you commit the money.

353.3walk, jog, or run???HPSCAD::WHITMANAcid rain burns my BASSTue Sep 20 1988 15:2918
	I run on a treadmill at the fitness center I belong to. The first
question I'd ask is do you want to walk on it, jog on it, or run on it???

I find I don't get much out of it until I get up to about 5.5 mph or so and
prefer to make it less tedious by varying the speed. I do the first and last
1/4 mile at 5 - 5.5 mph, the second 1/4 mile at 6 MPH, and the middle distance
at 6.5 - 7.5 mph.. If I get tired or winded I'll slow it down a little. When
I'm feeling bored with it I'll speed it up until I get winded or tired, and
so it goes until I poop-out at which time I do that last 1/4 mile I mentioned
earlier.

	The treadmills I've seen for home use usually don't go that fast.
Running on the motorized treadmill is definitely different from running on
the road...

353.4Walk fast, jogSOFBAS::RHODESWed Sep 21 1988 13:007
    I want to use it for very brisk walking (~4.0 - 4.5 mph) and
    jogging (6 mph), mostly. I have heard that the good ones for
    home use should have at least a 1 hp motor and that they
    cost around $1,000.

    Is this true?

    i have used a one at my health club, its neat plus you can vary
    the inclination and work different parts of your legs, only problem
    is its used so much there's a line to use it plus when it breaks
    down doesn't seem to be anyone to repair it.
