325.0. "THE PERPETUAL dieter..." by MJOVAX::FREELAND () Thu Jul 14 1988 22:53

    I, like all of you are trying to take off some unwanted pounds...twenty
    pounds to be exact. How many of you have bought an article of clothing
    and said, "oh, I'll be able to fit in it after I loose this weight",
    and have a complete wardrobe of clothes with the tags still on them!!
    Or go out to lunch and order a salad and a diet soda to give the
    impression that you've finally decided to watch your calories -
    only to go home that night and while watching TV, decide to pull
    out a bag of chips and ice cream bars to "snack" on before bedtime.

    I'm the type that stays on a "seafood" diet - the more food I see,
    the more I WANT IT!!!

    How many of you have watched those "miraculous" weightloss programs
    about people who've lost 40, 50 pounds, and more, and tell how "easy
    and painless" those diets were. You consientiously right the toll
    free number down, and when you find out that the program cost three
    million dollars to order, you tear the number up and turn to another
    channel - you know, one that begins with a commercial of a nine
    pound nymph slowly ascending out of the water sipping a glass of
    chrystal lite! Well - if you've guessed that my will power is as
    strong as rice paper - you're right! I N-E-E-D  H-E-L-P!!

    I can discipline in so many ways, but not when it comes to dieting.
    If you have any suggestions as to how to get me into the proper
    frame of mind I would appreciate it.

325.1YOU'VE got to do it on your own!!MSDOA2::MCMULLINFri Jul 15 1988 13:2723
    I'm sorry to say only you can get yourself into the right frame
    of mind; but, you can get support by joining an organized weight
    loss group, like Weight Watchers and it doesn't cost alot to join.
    I joined for $10.00 (I think it is regularly $20, but I joined while
    they were having a discount membership fee) and for $7.00 a week
    after that I can remain a member until I reach my goal weight.
    After I reach my goal weight, I'll become a lifetime member, which
    means I don't have to pay anymore as long as I stay at goal. To
    me, this sounded wonderful, financially. I didn't have a lot of
    money to spend. This is my first week with Weight Watchers and
    so far, I've had no problems staying on plan. I had been trying
    to diet on my own for several months and like you, I couldn't get
    my mind set that I was going to diet faithfully. I also liked to
    eat at night while watching tv. I'd do good during the day and
    pig out at night. I was even gaining weight by eating so much at
    night. Note 321 is the one I entered when I decided to join Weight
    Watchers. I know how you feel. You've just got to decide "I'm
    going to do something about this" and do it. I wish you the best
    of luck in finding a program that is right for you and luck with
    sticking with it.

325.2Diet WorkshopTHOTH::MCNEILWed Jul 20 1988 17:2725
    Diet Workshop

    You also might want to look into the "Diet Workshop Program". It
    is another organized weight loss group very similar to Weight Watchers.
    I too tried to diet on my own but always to no avail. I must of
    tried at least 50 different times.

    But 7 weeks ago I joined the Diet Workshop here at work (MLO), and
    so far I am down 12 lbs and still going. No giving up this time.
    It feels great. I never thought I could do it, figured I would
    be wasting the $50 it costs to join.....but I tell you. The way
    I feel 12 lbs lighter, and all the compliments etc I am getting,
    and the way I feel inside, is definatly worth the money!!! Believe
    me, I am not rich, I can't afford to just throw $50 away. But the
    feeling of feeling GOOD about yourself is GREAT!

    I am joing the next session too. Still want to lose another 20-25
    lbs. It may take awhile, but it is definatly worth the wait.

    Good Luck!

    If you happen to be located at the Mill, there is a new session
    starting next week, (if we can get 15 people) if you are interested.

325.3Negative and positive controls16BITS::AITELEvery little breeze....Thu Jul 21 1988 15:3721
    Think of your family having to order a 5XL coffin for you, since
    overweight is a major cause of or contributor to many things that
    kill. If you have kids, think of them raising grandkids you won't
    see.

    When you look at those chips, think of that gravestone:

    	Here lies Louise
    	drowned in her own fat.

    On the positive side, taking up gardening works wonders. Not only
    do you have all those fresh veggies available, but it's harder to
    eat cookies with mud and dirt all over your hands. Keep a mini-cooler
    of diet soda in the shade by the garden, and you won't even be tempted
    by going in to the refrigerator. Any activity that takes you away
    from food-sources for hours at a time will help - especially if
    you do it during high-temptation times. I garden or go to the gym
    in the evening, during that before-dinner munchie time.

325.4Good things are happening..MJOVAX::FREELANDFri Jul 22 1988 17:318
    Thank you for your suggestions as well as the encouragement. I guess
    it was a good omen or something because a few days ago, I won an
    $1100, 3 year membership to a local health club. I've also decided
    to join Diet Workshop ( I don't have an in-house program. I'm located
    in the Harrisburg, PA office.) I'll report on my progress from time
    to time.
