286.0. "Looking for the Old "Scarsdale"" by MILVAX::RABOIN () Mon May 23 1988 16:34

I am looking for a copy (the abbreviated version) of the OLD
Scarsdale Diet. I tried it a few years ago with success and
    can't find it.

    Searched this file without success.

Hope someone can help me. The version I am looking for
just shows Monday-Sunday with the basics for each day.

    Thanks. Bette

286.3Scaresdale is DANGEROUS!SOFBAS::RHODESFri May 27 1988 14:1633
I tried this diet several times in college and can attest to the
fact that IT WORKS. Each time, I lost 14 pounds in 14 days. Now
that I've learned a few things about nutrition however, I'd like
to share with you 3 good reasons why you SHOULDN'T go on this diet.
    (There are others).

    1. The Scarsdale diet is nutritionally incomplete. For one thing,
it totally eliminates dairy products. It's also imbalanced--
too much protein, not enough starch/carbs.

Starch is NOT fattening, contrary to popular belief. Ounce
per ounce, starch has the same or fewer calories than meat.
Starch contains no fat, either, which is a benefit to the
health conscious. Other carbohydrates, such as veggies and
fruits, contain far less calories than either starch or protein.

    2. About half your weightloss during the 2 week period is largely
water. This means two things. You will spend much of the first
week in the toilet and some of the weight will come back as
soon as you go off the diet.

    3. Because this diet leans heavily toward protein consumption,
your body will produce a lot of ketones. If ketones are not
eliminated fast enough, you risk ketosis of the liver. So,
if you STILL INSIST on following this diet, please drink
lots and lots of water (8-10 large glasses a day).

Just as an aside, I found that this diet left me slim but feeling
weak, both during and after. It's not a healthy way to lose weight.

    Heather

ANY DIET THAT SPECIFIES A TIME LIMIT MAY BE DANGEROUS.
	-----------------------------------------------------

This includes Scarsdale and the WBZ radio diet.

There is much more to life than weight. No sense hurting your
overall health for the quick loss of a few pounds of fat. You could
lose the same amount without endangering your health, it just takes
    a little while longer.

Everything Heather said in .3 is correct.
