276.0. "alcoholic drinks" by SUBURB::COWLEYA (ANGE) Wed May 11 1988 10:06

    Hi everyone

What sort of alcoholic drinks aren't TOO bad for you when you're
dieting? I know ..... they all are, but if you HAD to have one, which
    would be the best?

i hate to say this but this is said with love--- get serious!!
there is no room for alchol drinking on a diet for the following
reasons 1= you become hungry after drinking 2=you are putting your
body through change enough so your immune system has to adjust so
why put it through more with drinking, even 1 may lead to another
and before you know it your swallowing the nasty munchies. Re-
consider low cal and if your out then order juoce or calistoga.
    good luck

276.2white wine?MSDOA2::MCMULLINWed May 11 1988 10:478
If you feel you absouloutely must have a drink, I've always heard
white wine isn't very fattening. I would avoid even that if at
all possible. I love mixed drinks and wine, but I've been totally
avoiding them. My anniversary is in September, and I'm not planning
on having a drink until then!!

I agree with .1. Why not try to fool yourself (and others) by
drinking a nice, tall glass of seltzer, sparkling water, Perrier,
etc. with a twist of lemon or lime? It looks like the real thing,
tastes good, and is a lot better for you AND your waistline.

Alas, but if you MUST indulge, a white wine spritzer would do the
least damage. It consists of white wine cut with selzter, with
    a twist.

Cutting the alcohol with something low or no calorie is the best way
to go. Make it last as long as possible. Use low-calorie mixers. Stay away
from the sweet stuff. I'd go for the wine spritzers if they'll satisfy
whatever you're trying to satisfy.

As was said previously, remember that alcohol will get you doubly by removing
any remaining willpower you might have!

But on the other hand, since you're no doubt eating less than you used to,
it won't take as much alcohol to get you buzzed. Put off the drink (singular!!)
as long as you can on that evening.

Jill, who's probably had 2 glasses of wine since she changed her eating
habits 2 years ago :-), and who used to gulp those frozen strawberry daiquiris
and pina coladas like they were going out of style! If it's not sweet, why
bother? :-)

    Thanks for the info everyone.

Just what CAN 'dieters' enjoy these days? Don't answer that.

I never did drink alcoholic beverages, but I'll tell you what I
do enjoy these days...lots of spring water every day (anywhere from
4 to 8 12-oz glasses!) and the feeling of being able to tie my sneakers
without my face feeling like it's going to POP!

276.7Alcohol weakens the resolveMARVIN::JUBBThu May 12 1988 13:5913
    Hi, Ange,

I HAVE been on a diet that allowed alcohol, and it worked. However,
more recently I have tried to incorporate alcohol in diets, and
I have found it to be a bad thing, because the alcohol (even one
glass of wine) weakened my resolve, and most times I had a drink,
I gave in to my desires for high calorie foods.

(However, if you do want to know about the diet that allows you
to drink, I'll be happy to give you more details)

You haven't said whether you want ideas for alcohol because you
sometimes Need a Drink, or because of a social situation where you
feel awkward without one (those are, mercifully, getting very rare).
My solution for the latter is to get something I don't much care for,
usually a 7&7. I take one sip, try not to grimace, then leave it
alone until I forget how awful it is. Repeat until time to leave. One
7&7 will last me for *hours*!

On the other hand, when I want to drink because I feel like drinking,
I'll go with local mixers, or OJ if I've got a fruit left. Most
calorie counters list alcohol - I believe all hard liquor has the
    same amount.

    Beverly

PS: What I enjoy most is my husband's increased attention ;-}.
	No calories!

Would you please post that diet in the notes file?

    Thanks!

276.10A diet that includes alcoholMARVIN::JUBBTue May 31 1988 08:4225
    Re .9

sorry for the delay in replying. The diet I followed which allowed
me alcoholic drinks, while sticking to the diet is the Frequent
Meal Diet I've listed in Note 238. The diet allows you to eat any
5 of a list of about 65 meals a day.

In addition to the meals I've listed in Note 238, you may have for
    a meal:

1/2 pint of lager or beer,
2 glasses of dry wine, or
2 pub measures of any spirit, plus low calorie mixer.

I found this option very useful, as it allowed me to have a couple
of glasses or wine with a meal, or have a couple of drinks in the
pub, if I felt like it.

    Ali

PS: sorry I didn't include this option with the original diet.
As I mentioned in .8, a couple of glasses of wine do nothing
for my willpower, so I decided to exclude this option when entering
        the diet. :*)
