274.0. "Burger King Chef Salads" by MSDOA1::MCMULLIN () Tue May 10 1988 13:01

    Does anyone know how many calories a Burger King chef salad contains.
    I read the article on the McDonald's salads, but the Burger King
    salad doesn't contain as many ingredients as the McDonald's salad
    does. Also, I have never had a McDonald's salad and I wasn't sure
    if they were the same size or not. I'm trying to eat between 1000
    and 1200 calories a day, so it's important I know ABOUT how many
    calories this contains. Even an educated guess will do.

    Also, what about taco salads? I know Taco Bell Taco salad has 910
    calories, but what about Pancho's taco salad? It's a lot smaller
    than Taco Bell's taco salad.

    Any replies will be helpful.

    Thanks,

    Virginia

    	Eliminating the sour cream will cut ~150 calories from the Taco
    Bell taco salad. Not getting the beans will cut an additional
    ~125 calories.

274.2True, but...MSDOA2::MCMULLINWed May 11 1988 10:3611
    Mike,

    That's true, but that will still leave 635 calories to ingest.
    I personally think that's too many calories to eat in one meal.
    I try to have about 200 to 250 calories for breakfast, 350 to 400
    for lunch, and 300 for dinner. That leaves me room for a snack
    during the day if I want it. A piece of fruit is a great pick me
    up in the afternoon. I appreciate the suggestion, though.

274.3sometimes a salad isn't a salad...ARGUS::CORWINI don't care if I AM a lemmingWed May 11 1988 16:0017
Does Burger King have nutritional information available like McD's has? That
would be the best answer if you're looking for calorie counts.

Alternate idea: Buy one (Dressing on the side!), take it home, and weigh
/measure what you can. I've never gotten one so I can't help in the details,
but cheese is about 100 calories an ounce, turkey about what? 50?, ham about
80 maybe? You can look these things up in your calorie book and figure out
what it adds up to.

Taco salad: Yum :-). Guacamole and sour cream will both cost you dearly,
And depending on how much ground beef and cheese they stuff in you can add
up real fast. You can sort of calculate this yourself too.

Let us know what you find out!

    Stay away from Chef Salads. The cheese is fattening, the egg is
    fattening, and the meats are fattening (with the exception of turkey
    and/or chicken). The McDonald's Chicken Oriental is the best "fast
    food salad" around. With the low cal dessing, it's only a few
    hundred calories. The Garden salad with low cal dressing wouldn't
    be bad either - EXCEPT for the cheese they put on it.

    Does this help? You basically don't have much choice if you want
    a low cal and low fat salad.

274.5"cheap" salad!!MMO01::MCMULLINWed May 11 1988 17:4626
    RE .3
    Jill,

    Taking it home and weighing everything out is a great idea!! Now,
    why didn't I think of that!! ;-}!!

    RE .4

    I know all that stuff is fattening, but this is a relatively small
    salad. It is mostly lettuce, a half of an egg (2 quarters) 4 cucumber
    slices, 2 tomato wedges, 1 bell pepper ring, and a scant amount
    of turkey, ham, and cheese. I order the lite Italian dressing.
    There is 25 calories in the whole packet of it. I don't usually
    use the little package of croutons they "sometimes" give me (you
    know how drive thru's are!!). Then, you get 2 to 4 saltines with
    it, depending on how generous the person at the drive-thru window
    is. I probably would not order this if I was at a nice restaurant
    that would put more cheese and meat on the salad. This is a fast
    food salad, therefore, it is made as cheaply as possible. That
    translates into very little meat or cheese as these are the more
    "expensive" ingredients of the salad. Am I making any sense?

    Thanks for all the input!!

    	Wendy's, on the East Coast, used to carry a taco salad until
    about 2-3 years ago.

    	As of last year, they were still available in Wendy's on the
    West coast.

274.9NH has 'em (again)ATSE::KASPERSuperstition brings Bad LuckTue May 24 1988 16:2211
    Wendy's in NH discontinued the Taco Salad for a while, then brought
    it back "by popular demand". You might try filling out suggestion
    cards, writing to the main offices, etc.

    The other option is to get a bowl of chili and a side salad, and add
    your own taco chips! I make taco salads at home with taco meat...

274.10Blame it on the shell!CSC32::FORSMANTue May 24 1988 17:199
    Taco Salads:
    1-Our Wendy's in Colorado has taco salads, and they are pretty good.

    2-The reason the Taco Bell taco salad is so high is due to the
    shell. It is fried in coconut type oil. You could try just eating
    the 'inside' of the taco salad, but if you're like me it's hard
    to resist! I bet at least half of the 910 calories are from the
    shell.

274.11I'll look for itMSDOA1::MCMULLINTue May 24 1988 18:4121
    RE -.1

    I bet you're right about half of the calories being in the shell.
    I use to (before I found out how high in calories these are) just
    crumble the top part of the shell and mix it in with my salad, but
    never ate the bottom, soggy part of the shell. I have a calorie
    book at home that lists some of the major fast food places and their
    food item calorie contents. I'll look tonight and see if it has
    Wendy's Taco Salad in it. It has Burger King in it, but not there
    chef salad. It could be the same way with Wendy's, ie...list Wendy's,
    but not the taco salad. It's really amazing at how many calories
    fast food has in it. Until you see it in black and white you'd
    never guess how many of those little critters are in a burger, fries,
    and milk shake. I use to drink chocolate malts alot and I found
    out a large one of them has over 1000 calories in it. I use to
    think nothing about ordering a jumbo cheeseburger, large fries, and
    a large shake or malt. That's probably where the majority of my
    extra lbs. came from. I'm learning to retrain my brain on a different
    level of satisfaction. Anyway, I'll quit rambling and look in my
    calorie book tonight for the Wendy's taco salad!!

274.12no taco saladMSDOA1::MCMULLINWed May 25 1988 10:573
    I looked in my book last night. It had Wendy's listed, but not
    the taco salad; sorry!! I'd like to know that myself!!

274.13just tortilla chips...RAVEN1::D_PAINEWed Jun 08 1988 16:3911
    Wendy's sells Taco salads in SC, NC, and West VA. still!! BUT they
    are not the same thing as the Taco salad that is served in Taco
    Bell and Del Taco.

    Wendy's Taco salad is just chili, lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese
    on top of tortilla CHIPS. That accounts for most of the difference
    in calories. These are good, but they (SIGH!) don't compare to
    the other taco SHELLS.

274.16Taco Salad at Taco Bell - over 1100 calsCSC32::FORSMANGinny Forsman 522-4731 CSC/CSFri Apr 28 1989 20:198
    RE: Taco Salad at Taco Bell

    Yes, they are over 1100 calories. Several years I called the home
    facility for Taco Bell to get the calorie count on the taco salad.
    I forget exactly, but it was around 1200 -1400. I was shocked!!
    I'm sure most of those calories are in the shell, as they use
    coconut oil for cooking them.

274.17Wendy's low-cal Italian dressing??DLOACT::RESENDEPnevertoolatetohaveahappychildhoodFri May 05 1989 21:3215
Recently I've been going out occasionally at lunch and getting Wendy's
Garden Spot salad bar. For those of you who aren't familiar with it, it's
a pretty normal salad bar with the usual veggies, etc. I get lettuce,
broccoli (lots), cauliflower (lots), cheese (just a little), egg (just a
little), carrots, cukes, tomatoes, radishes, and whatever other veggies
might be available. It's a good, satisfying lunch!

Instead of topping it with one of my WW single-serving salad dressing
pouches, I've been using Wendy's Low-Cal Italian dressing. I was just
wondering if anyone out there might have a reference that gives the calorie
count of that (or any other) salad bar reduced-calorie Italian dressing.
