265.0. "Food Courts" by PBA::ARNO () Mon Apr 25 1988 12:26

I'am on a very strick diet my Dr. put me on. I need to
    lose some weight and fast.

I went to the Pheasant Lane Mall and all I could do is smell
the Food. My nose picked up the POP Corn and French Fries
and seeing people eating Ice Cream. and Cookies.

Why is it you can smell those foods more when you know you
    can't have them ?

How do you do in the Malls ?

265.1Ah yes, the dreaded MALLCADSE::SPRIGGSDarlene..Making Music ALL THE TIME!Mon Apr 25 1988 13:0722
Malls are indeed a challenge. I have never been able to go into
one without eating SOMETHING. So, I don't fight the feeling anymore.
What I do is trade off more exercise to compensate. A walk faster
through the mall, stay a little longer, park far away. However,
I only allow myself one "goodie" (small ice cream/frozen yogurt,
two cookies, etc.) It has worked well so far. The only other
way for me to combat the smells is to bring my own (popcorn,etc.).
One more thing, when I'm really feeling weak, I go to the mall that
doesn't have cheap good places to eat/munch (South Shore Plaza in
my case). Forgot one more thing, never go to a mall unless you
really have to shop. Most stores don't allow food in them, so if
you really need to get things done, eating slows you down.

    Happy shopping.

P.S. -- Another trick that I stumbled upon is trying on clothes
when I first arrive. By the time I trade for larger sizes and look
at myself in the "all too revealing" mirrors, I don't want to eat
much (nothing fattening anyway like fries). Jeans work especially
    well for this.

Another way of doing it is eat before you leave to go to the mall.
If you're stomach is full, your mouth and hands won't be pulling
the rest of your body to the food area. I've found that eating
before I go malling has helped me stay away from the food courts
    everytime.

Some concessions are offering steamed vegetables or pocket salads
or fruit cups that can be part of your next meal.

I prefer to adjust my thinking and tastes to what I feel is good
for me. I did this by analyzing how I react to food. I react
poorly to sugar and sweets and my brain identifies with feelings
of jumpiness and tiredness when I see or smell cookies. But I
seem to be more alert when I eat vegetables and fruit and when
I see those foods they appeal to me.

I have also been on a spending diet and I never realized how much
money I spent on snacking until I stopped giving in to urges. I
use to find myself purchasing a fruit cup when I was shopping,
knowing full well I had the same ingredients at home and it was
just a matter of waiting an hour for the treat.

How about just not going to the mall?
