259.0. "Calorie Counting" by SKETCH::BASSETT (Design) Fri Apr 08 1988 15:47

I have looked thru all the titles and haven't found any topics that
relate to calorie counting. I was wondering if anyone had the calorie
counting book and if they knew how many calories are in a Saltless
    Saltine ????

I am wondering because I am on one of my own diets that consists
of nothing all day but saltless saltines and water and when I go
home I can have a normal dinner. I know this is not a very good
diet but I am just out to drop 10 pounds FAST.

    Thanks!
    Linda

According to a chart I have, 4 saltines are supposed to be 50 cal.
The salt doesn't matter as far as calories are concerned, only when
it comes to water retension. If you MUST undertake a diet such
as this, whole grain products will be a lot better on the "old system".
(If you've ever mixed white flour with water, you can recall the
excellent "paste" it makes). Also, some studies have shown that
you will lose more weight if you eat in the morning or afternoon
    rather than at night.

My own experience with a home-made quick weightloss diet:
In college, I had gained about 10 pounds from eating cheese burgers
and french fries, and ice cream and.... Anyway, I decided to go
on a diet of oranges for a few days with a lot of exercise. I lost
9 lbs. in one week! This would have been great if I just wanted
to look good for a special occasion or just for a short while.
I did not gain right away, but as we all know, even if we find a
shortcut to the weight goal, we still have to change the habits
that got us there in the first place. This is NOT a put down of
your plans. I realize that the only person that knows what is best
for you at this time is you. There is just a lot of wisdom in this
file and you might want to consider a longer but better (read
    "healthier") way.

I know this is kind of late, but I bought a calorie book Friday
and according to it, each saltine, salt or saltless, contains 12
calories. This seems to be a pretty good book so far. It's called
"CALORIE GUIDE TO BRAND NAMES & BASIC FOODS" by Barbara Kraus.
It has several national restaurants listed like McDonald's, Burger
King, Taco Bell, White Castle, etc., and the calories of most of
their foods. I was real surprised to find that a Taco Bell Taco
salad contains 910 calories. That threw me for a loop!!

I'm trying to eat between 1000 and 1200 calories a day. This book
really has helped me so far!!
