245.0. "Shopping on a diet..." by ARGUS::CORWIN (I don't care if I AM a lemming) Wed Mar 23 1988 11:27

Yesterday I stopped at a local fish market to pick up dinner. I asked for
1/4 pound of schrod. The guy asked if I was sure, that I'd starve, and I said
yes, I'm sure, I'm on a diet (not that it's his business, but that's ok). He
cut off a piece, weighed it, and it was 1/3 pound. He asked if that was
all right, and that it would cook down to 1/4 pound anyway. I said yes, it was
close enough, and that I originally asked for 1/4 pound knowing it would cook
down! I paid the slightly inflated price and left. I ended up throwing out
about an ounce when I was done cooking it.

Last night we went to the supermarket. I ordered 1/4 pound of salmon filet at
the fish counter. (this was the guy from the deli counter who moved over when
I asked for fish). At first, he held up one of the pieces there, which was
probably 1/2 pound, and said he couldn't cut it for me! When I questioned that,
he asked the "real fish guy" who was doing "real fish work", who fortunately
said "of course you can cut it". He cut off a piece, and it weighed .31 pound,
which was again a tad more than I wanted, where a tad is an ounce, which makes
a bit of difference to us. I may be ok this time, since I do have to account
for the skin, but still it's more than I asked for.

What I should really do (and I've done it once before) was to ask for 3 ounces,
so when they cut too big a piece (usually the case) I'm still ok.

Would it be petty for me to say "no, it's not good enough", since I'm going to
throw the extra away and don't want to pay for it? Should I expect close-enough
when ordering fish like that? The money really isn't the issue, since even at
$9 a pound, an ounce is only $.56 or so. I guess it just bugs me, especially
since they cut it too big, and I'm paying the extra, which is a lot more than
they paid for it in the first place! And I feel like I should really be
speaking up, which has never been my strong point.

Well, I felt like relating my experiences, and I'm sure some of you have
related ones to share...and it's time to go walk across the streeet to Weight
Watchers...

Jill, while I understand your point of view, I don't think the people
at the fish counters are being that unreasonable. It's not easy to cut
exactly 4 ounces of anything, and most people would rather have too
much than too little. I wouldn't ask them to trim off an ounce -
they'd have to throw it away. One thing that I've found works at the
deli counter is to tell them I'd rather it was shy than over; that
tells them which way to estimate. The inexactitude (is that a word?
Spell doesn't think so!) of the measurement is part of the tradeoff for
    getting fresh fish.

On the other hand, I get very annoyed with people who think that I
don't really want what I ordered. If they're being polite about it, "I
don't know if you realize, but this will cook down a bit," that's okay.
But I don't need to be told I'll starve. That sort of presumptuous
familiarity from salespeople REALLY irks me!

    Jill,

I've found the same problem. What I usually do is ask for
1/2 pound (which, for some reason they are much more likely to be
able to cut accurately) then cut it in half when I get home. Then
I've solved the problem twice in one shot.

I realize that you might not want to eat the same thing 2 nights
in a row, but if you don't mind that (cook it differently, for
    example)...

    -Amy.

245.3thanks for the thoughts...ARGUS::CORWINI don't care if I AM a lemmingWed Mar 23 1988 15:4318
Thanks for the responses so far.

I really did think (deep down inside) that asking for exactness was
unreasonable. I guess I wanted some reassurance that I wasn't being too
un-assertive by not speaking up, and I wanted to voice my peeve, especially
since it happened twice yesterday.

Beverly, good idea about asking them to be shy rather than over. I've done this
in the past, but forgot about the trick. Sort of goes along with asking for
less than you want, depending on "track records".

Amy, also good idea about asking for 1/2 pound. I've done that before at
times; even if they're off by the same amount, you split the error and it
doesn't hurt as bad. I don't mind eating it twice, it just depends on my
scheduling algorithms, especially since fish doesn't keep very well.

    Sounds like you got scrod.

Along the lines of Amy's solution. Buy 1/2; freeze 1/4. Fish freezes
really well if you sprinkle it with water first...Then wrap it tightly
to the fishy water doesn't leak out. ;')
