242.0. "Girl Scout Cookies" by NHL::ARNO (Smile for Giggles) Mon Mar 21 1988 12:55

How have you handled the Girl Scout Cookies ?

We talked about this in Weight Watchers class.
One lady said she thought these cookies are
so little and she kept eating them one after the
    other..

She gained weight and also found out it was wrong.

Have you had a hard time with them ?

I have had my taste for sure...

Ahhh!! Now you talking. Girl Scout Cookies...I think they are
everyone's weakness. But they're so good. It's very easy to
eat one and then one more and one more until you've eventually
eatten them all, but we all know that that's not the way to do it.

Every year I like to buy about 2 boxes of each type, but what I
do is freeze them all except for 1 box, which I keep out for the
kids, and use for lunches and stuff. And they are just as delicious
when un-frozen as they were before. But, you have to learn how to
limit yourself to only 2 or 3.

If I remember correctly, the shortbread cookies do not really have
    a high calorie-content, but they are de-li-cious!!

The way I get around Girl Scout cookies is not to buy any. I also
ask my co-workers not to bring any near me when they arrive. I
haven't had any problems with them this year.

re .2 (I like frozen cookies! - I thought I was the only person
who liked 'em that way...) :-)

think of them is if they aren't in the house.

242.5can you control yourself?ARGUS::CORWINI don't care if I AM a lemmingTue Mar 22 1988 10:2639
I was under the impression that people froze the Girl Scout cookies to keep
them fresh, not to keep from eating them. Maybe the people in this conference
do it for different reasons, but from the last few replies that doesn't seem
to stop us! I'm sure I'd love the mints frozen; they're my favorite. I even
ate frozen chocoate cookie dough chunks when we had them around!!

Last year I ordered four boxes of GS cookies. When they arrived, I didn't even
OPEN them for months, because I knew what would happen if I opened them when I
wasn't ready to deal with them. In the old days, I'd eat half a box in one
sitting at my desk and those memories scared me. I kept them on the top shelf
of one of the cabinets, and mostly forgot about them. Meanwhile, I was doing
well maintaining my goal weight. I finally opened a box, and I was actually
able to eat one or two at a time, every once in a while. Sometimes I even
wrote down the optional calories for them, which has always been a problem for
me. The only problem I had was eating most of a box of the Samoas when I was
home sick once. I finally finished the last of the mints last week.

This year, I was thinking of maybe ordering one box of mints. Then, Bill told
me he ordered a couple of boxes from someone at work, and a friend told me
that since she hadn't gotten in touch with me in time, she ordered what she
thought I had ordered last year again this year. (she said I didn't have to
take them, though :-)). I haven't gotten any cookies yet from either source,
and I'm not in any rush...

I'm glad the cookies have calorie counts on them; it makes it easier to write
down the optionals, which I'm really going to try and do this time!!

And maybe I'll throw the mints in the freezer :-) (maybe even the big one
in the garage!)

Kristy's idea of not buying any is probably the best if you're having control
problems. If you don't like turning down the girls, and you can handle this,
buy the cookies and give them away when you get them.

Good timing on this topic, especially after my Sweet Dreams last night; you
won't believe how much cake I was eating and serving in my dreams!!

Well, I guess I'm the weirdo in the group then, because I have
never eaten a frozen cookie. I freeze food mainly for storage until
I want it, or need it later. I mean...doesn't eating a frozen cookie
yank the h*ll out of your teeth???!!!
So, freezing is NOT A DETERRENT after all!:-)

I just ordered a box of each kind from a co-worker, and I allready
have a box opened at home. But, I have learned to control myself
by only haveing 2 or 3. And yes, if you can't control your urge
to have the whole box...then I guess not buying any is the best
     way to handle it.

Last year when the cookies came in I baked my own choc.chip cookies
and discovered that mine were better. My peanut butter and sugar
cookies are better than theirs as well. I still buy them though
and give them to the kids. The kids like mine, but they like theirs
as well. The best part in all this is that mine take time. But
if I really want a cookie, I want the best I can have. And about
once a year I make the time to do it.

I agree with what a few replies have stated in that the best way
to handle the Girl Scout Cookies (or for that matter, any "too hot
to handle" sweets) is to not buy the suckers in the first place.

As a previous reply stated, if one feels strongly about buying a
box or two to support the Girl Scouts, giving them away is always
an option. However, my wife (who had purchased a box from one of
her violin students) brought in her box to the teachers' room at
the school where she works and got a few dirty looks from her
colleagues who are trying to lose... :-)

242.9MAYBE A BOYCOTT FOR THE GIRL SCOUTSWONDER::COYLEOnly 48.8% of my former self!Tue Mar 22 1988 15:5734
Just out of curiousity is there a Girl Scout running the network,
I entered this one only to lose the network before it made it.

Like just about everyone I have a hard time resisting the purchase
of Girl Scout Cookies. A child requesting what effectively is a
donation to an organization that I would willing support because
of their state goals, is at the same time literaly offering to
    feed my main weakness.

The Girl Scouts are presumably promoting character growth, leadership
and good citizenship amoung young woman. I support these goals.
In the light of todays more health concious and weight sensitive
society shouldn't the Girl Scouts reconsider their primary fund
    raising project.

More of the young woman in the Girl Scouts will grow up to have
    a weight problem than will become smokers, alcoholics, or drug addicts;
yet we condone, support and even encourage these children to sell
cookies to raise money. No one would allow, never mind encourage,
any project that exploited children to push cigaretts, alcohol,
or drugs to raise money for any project no matter how worthy. Why
do the Girl Scouts do the same with sweets, my personell and probably
    America's most commom adiction?

Isn't it about time that the leadership of the Girl Scouts reconsider
this program. Just because American's have a tradition of being
overweight and suffering the health consequences is no reason for
an organization as fine as the Girl Scouts to feed this problem
in the name of their own tradition.

Your friendly scrooge and cookie addict,

242.10try resisting candy bars from Boy Scouts!ARGUS::CORWINI don't care if I AM a lemmingTue Mar 22 1988 17:0216
Hi Joe,

You can't just blame the Girl Scouts, though. Most of the groups I know of
who have fund-raising drives sell sweets. There are often boxes of candy
bars on some of the secretary office 1/2 walls, where part of the proceeds
go to the Boy Scouts, or some other organization that you'd like to support.
I remember in high school selling candy bars for the Spanish Club to help send
a student to South America. Talk about corrupting the youth of America, you
should have seen how fast those candy bars went!! The organizations sell what
people will buy, and what is easy to sell in the first place. The Boy Scouts,
at least in our town, are selling fertilizer for fund-raising. We were
approached at the dump, er, transfer station this Saturday. We had to turn
them down, though, until we get a lawn :-).

    RE .10

You are correct, I did not intend to attack just the Girl Scouts.
Organizations like the Boy and Girl Scouts are dedicated to the
most important function of society; guiding children along the road
to responsible adulthood. With the problems in this society with
overconsumption of sugar I consider funderaisers based on this problem
inconsistant with that goal. By the Boy Scouts as well as the Girl
    Scouts.

The Spanish Club presumably has other goals and reasons for existance
that are not necessarally in conflict here. Although as a school
funtion they will, I hope, have some positive impact on the maturing
of th youth, it is NOT their primary and stated goal.

Fund raisers for these groups are important. I am only suggesting
that they be consistant with the whole program. Their are items
like greeting cards, wrapping paper that can have positive overtones
in the religious area. Or First Aid Kits and Fire Extinquishers
tha relate to other Scouting activities and at the same time are
way too missing in the American Home. These examples are more positive
and consitant with what I consider the totally lausable goals of
    these organizations.

How can such little cookies get so many people loving them.
I wouldn't mind just giving the Girls 2.4,6 or more dollars
This way the girls are getting the money and not the company
    that makes the cookies..

I know myself I can't just eat one Somer..

The leader was telling us how many calories in one of them.

    Hey Ann -
My daughter is a Brownie and I personally help her sell over 200
boxes of those delights over the last few days. It does help a good
cause and just like everything else, used with caution, a girl scout
cookie is just a harmless treat. Of course in my house, the 2 boxes
we ordered are for those less than the age of 9 (I don't qualify)
and will be handed out one at a time and only in consideration of
other things eated that day. My one gift to my children is that
they WILL know proper eating habits by the time they are responsible
enough to take control of their own. After that, if they get fat
because of overeating its their fault and their problem. I will
hafe at least done my part to educate them early.(Wish my parents
    had done that for me)

We buy them, take the boxes to work, and leave them open on the

skinny people in the office enjoy them immensely. They never last very
    long!

    I always say "I'm sorry; I'd like to, but I can't eat cookies." It's
true because of my wheat allergy, but also because of my sugar addiction.
I used to be a girl scout, and I did the door-to-door cookie thing; we
didn't expect every single person to buy, and we didn't think people who
politely said no were evil. Part of the point of scouting is to learn a
positive outlook; it's *not* *your* *problem* if the adults in a child's
life are teaching her unreasonable expectations!

If you really want to make a contribution, do so directly. I'm sure they
won't object. Or, offer to contribute some time.

  Just a thought:

If you can't say NO, then request the cute little girl DELIVER the cookies
to a Nursing home, Hospital, Soup Kitchen, Food bank, etc. Have her come back
to you to collect the money, but stipulate she MUST give the cookies away, and
not to her friends.

By doing this you accomplish three things:

1: help out the Girl Scouts
2: help out someone less fortunate than yourself (whoever gets the cookies)
3: Most importantly teach a little girl that there are some people in
the world who are more concerned about others than themselves.

Well, I broke down and bought 3 boxes, but I HAD TO! Here's why,
a girl scout showed up at my door in the morning and I told her
I had already bought some from the girl next door. So, then the
girl next door shows up to sell them, and geeze, I couldn't let
myself remain a liar, so I bought them. I mean, this was the
right thing to do wasn't it? :-). I'll bring them in to work
and let everyone munch.
