192.0. "Feta cheese...Help" by TFH::LAPOINTE () Mon Jan 11 1988 13:38

    Does anyone have any info on feta cheese. I am in love with it
    so I have this bad feeling that it is not good for me. I have looked
    in ever publication I own and have nothing on it.

In the absence of any information to the contrary, I'd expect it to be counted
as a hard/semi-soft cheese, worth appprox. 100 calories per ounce. I'll
see if I can find any more info...

192.2Some infoTALLIS::SLEWISTue Jan 12 1988 08:238
    According to Jane Brody's Good Food book:

    "Feta, a cheese made from sheep's milk, is lower in fat than most
    cow's milk cheeses, and much of the salt can be soaked out of it."

    She recommends soaking the feta in a bowl of cold water for 30-45
    minutes to remove some of the over-abundant salt.

192.3Avoid It!CSC32::G_MCINTOSHThu Jan 14 1988 17:5614
    I know that feta cheese is, in fact, a cheese and for that reason
    alone, it is avoided on a health-supporting diet. If it's a dairy
    product, it's avoided. Dairy products are generally high in fat,
    protein and cholesterol and low in carbohydrates and contain no
    fiber. Dairy products are the leading cause of food allergies.
    Dairy products are high on the food chain and therefore may contain
    dangerous levels of environmental contaminants. Antibiotics are
    commonly used on dairy farms to treat cows for such conditions as
    mastitis, an infection of the cow's udder.....I want none of that.

    It is avoided on a health-supporting diet.

192.4Milk Products are not inherently evil!BEVRLY::KASPERThis note contains exactly ---> Fri Jan 15 1988 10:1517

    Glenn, I think your attitude on dairy products is a bit extreme.
    Certainly they should be used in moderation, but to rule out the
    best source of calcium available seems unwise, especially for women.
    Contaminants and antibiotics are unfortunately part of many things
    that we eat.

    As for allergies, they are definitely something to be watched out for;
    however, as someone who is allergic to wheat, I'd find giving up all
    cheese, let alone all milk products, very difficult. I have enough
    restrictions on my diet as it is.

    Blanket statements are often misleading.

192.5Thank youTFH::LAPOINTEFri Jan 15 1988 10:4415

    	Thanks folks for all the info. It's good to know that it is
    in the catagory as all the other cheeses. Well Glenn I had a feeling
    it would be full of all the evils of milk products, but I also need
    some form of protein in my diet. I have cut down on my intake of
    red meat and I am eating more and more fruits and vegs. I just
    started eating bran and whole wheat breads. So a little at a time
    does it. One might go through serious withdrawal if it's done all
    at once.

    thanks again for your help.

192.6Be Careful!CSC32::G_MCINTOSHMon Jan 18 1988 12:4214
    Beverly,

    Your opinion on dairy products is fine with me. But if you are
    saying that women should consume extra dairy products in an effort
    to prevent osteoporosis, then you're really going to open up a whole
    new can of worms and really a separate note on osteoposis. I'll
    be happy to get into that with you, for discussion's sake, if you
    wish. I will say that the American Dairy Coucil and the calcium
    pill-pushers will NOT tell the public the reasons for osteoporosis.
    Drinking milk or taking calcium pills will do very little to prevent
    the onset of this disease.

    Rocknrobin,

    A little bit at a time is just great. Best of luck.

    Oh Beverly! I didn't say that dairy products should be used in
    moderation. I said they should not be consumed at all!

192.8Or should we agree to disagree?BEVRLY::KASPERThis note contains exactly ---> Mon Jan 18 1988 12:589
    Glenn,

    I realized that you were opposed to dairy products in general; that's
    what I was disagreeing with! Perhaps a "dairy pros and cons" topic
    would be a good idea . . .

192.9CSC32::G_MCINTOSHMon Jan 18 1988 13:175
    Dairy products pros and cons would be fun. I truly have no problem
    with disagreeing. I like good conversation!

192.10Calories in feta cheeseHAMPS::TAYLORWed Mar 02 1988 11:017
    Going back to the original topic of Feta cheese.....

    According to my calorie book feta cheese made from Greek ewes' milk
    contains 85 calories per ounce. (Don't know if nationality of ewes
    makes that much difference!)
