187.0. "Subliminal Reducing Tapes" by EXPLOR::GONZALEZ () Thu Jan 07 1988 09:41

    Has anyone had any experience with the "Subliminal Suggestion" Diet
    cassette tapes?

    I see them advertised a lot, with folks who claim that they work.

    They seem to be a good middle ground for those who find hypnosis
    unworkable.

    Anyone out there with any knowledge and/or experience in their use?

187.1I hate to admit it, but . . RSTS32::VERGEThu Jan 07 1988 15:5915
    Well, I tried one - and still have the tape. The directions
    say to listen to it at least once a day (a 45-minute commitment) and
    that you shouldn't listen to it in the car (presumably due to the
    hypnotic effect it might have). I tried to listen everyday, just
    before I went to sleep. It didn't do any good for weightloss, but the
    music was rather soothing, and did help to relieve some stress, so all
    was not a waste of time and effort. I don't think I would reccomend
    buying a tape, but maybe if someone really believed it would work and
    followed the routine exactly, who knows????

    Weight Loss Clinic has me down 33 pounds, and I'll stick to them for
    the last 12!

187.2They work for me!LAIDBK::SHERRICKMolly :^)Thu Jan 14 1988 19:3015
    I have had great success with a tape I picked up in a bookstore.
    It can be found at any of the major bookstores, and is published
    by Audio Activation. It is called Slim Forever - and there is a
    version for men and for women.
    I found that when I listen to the tape regularly, it is very easy
    to stay motivated. It becomes EASY to stay on a program, and fun.
    Those suggestions REALLY work for me. I was formerly 215 lbs. and
    now weigh 145! One side of the tape is a self hypnosis thing with
    visualisations, and affirmations. The flip side has music with
    subliminal suggestions (the same ones as are on side 1), and can
    be listened to at any time, even in the car. I like to listen as
    I'm falling asleep, or sitting in a hot tub. Very relaxing.

187.3They Work For Me, Too!CRETE::LEVITANWed Feb 03 1988 15:3112
    I agree with Molly. I bought a tape recorder that shuts off
    automatically and now that I'm back on my program again, play
    a tape nightly. The music soothes me and puts me to sleep and
    I am getting a subliminal message. They suggest that you play
    the tapes twice a day - and I find a problem trying to find the
    time to play it daily. But as long as I can play it as I go to
    sleep, I'm doing well. Some tapes have verbage, some play music,
    some play the sounds of the ocean. I feel they are helpful and
    would suggest trying them.

187.4I think I'll try itGENRAL::TLANETammy LaneMon Mar 28 1988 18:4913
    I have heard from some people that the tapes have worked for them
    real well. One of them lost 16 lbs so far. They say you just don't
    feel as hungry and of course it helps relax you too.

    I have sent off for 2 of them through the Joe Land Co. The brochure said
    to get a tape player that has auto reverse so that you don't have
    to turn it over. and also to get a demagnetizer. It sounds like
    it has worked for a lot of people. I'll let ya know if it has helped
    me when ever I get them.

187.5Where can I get this tape(s)BREW11::MASSARIGoldfish shoals nibbling at my toesWed Mar 21 1990 11:1714
    Hello,

    	It's nearly a year since the last entry but the reviews about
    these tapes seem pretty good and I'd love the chance to try it out.
    Does anybody out there either have a brouchure, an add or even a
    tape that they no longer need? If so could you forward it to me
    either in notes or via e-mail

    Unfortunately I am located in England so that may present a problem

187.6what the people who have tested them sayMILKWY::ZARLENGAshe's super freaky, yeow!Thu Mar 22 1990 00:5527
                 from The Edell Health Letter, Mar90, p3

	Listening to hidden messages played over and over again can help
    improve your memory, lose weight, and even cure drug addictions - or
    so say promoters of subliminal therapy.

    	Researchers at the annual convention of the American Speech-
    Language-Hearing Association presented a different opinion of
    subliminal tapes: "They're bunk".

    	The problem, say Michael Walker, an audiologist in Toledo, Ohio
    and Timothy Moore, a psychologist in Toronto, is that subliminal tapes
    repeat a given message thousands of times a minute, whereas the human
    ear can process an absolute maximum of only 500 words in that time.
    (People normally speak at a rate of 150-200 words per minute)

    	Promoters of subliminal tapes argue that the unconscious mind
    can understand what the conscious mind can't hear. Walker and Moore
    counter that there's no evidence to support this claim.

    	Once again, losing weight and kicking a bad habit like cigarette
    smoking takes a fierce desire and sheer willpower. Unfortunately,
    there's no magic in that.

187.7"Not understood" doesn't mean "can't work"ATSE::BLOCKI've Seen the Promised LandThu Mar 22 1990 01:0610

    I didn't realize that subliminal tapes were at high speed; is that true
    of all of them? I thought it was just very low volume, under hypnotic
    music. While I've never tried them, I can see that it might work.
    There's a lot we don't understand about how the brain really works; the
    statements quoted in .-1 are a bit too condescending for my tastes.

re: are they all at high speed

    	I don't know, Beverly.

re: the tone of the article

    	I entered the article exactly as it was written.

    There is a really good relaxation tape by Denise Linn about Weight
    Loss. I didn't lose weight, but it helped me to work through why I was
    overweight which ended up enabling me to lose weight - if that makes sense.

    I tend to agree with the subliminal tape not being great. Understand
    why we have a problem is the answer IMHO.
