134.0. "Don't Let The Menu Limit You!" by ARGUS::CORWIN (I don't care if I AM a lemming) Thu Oct 15 1987 15:01

Sometimes it takes a little imagination and assertiveness to turn things in
your favor...

When I was on vacation recently, we ate our first dinner in the motel's
restaurant. When the waitress asked if we wanted dessert, I asked if they
had any fresh fruit, since I had noticed it listed on the breakfast menu
outside. She gave me a strange look, but went back to check, and reported
that all she could get me would be half a canteloupe. "Wonderful", I said,
"I'll take that." She brought it, and admitted that it really did look good!

A couple of days later, for breakfast, Bill had their special "2 blueberry
pancakes" with blueberry sauce, and I had my customary taste. They were
really good, and another day I asked if I could just order one pancake, as I
didn't even want the temptation to eat the other, never mind the waste! No,
problem, and they only charged me half the price! (I know, I should have
gotten it w/o the blueberry sauce, but it wasn't syrupy or sweet anyway).

During a group dinner, where everyone is served the same thing (or one of
several choices), I've always asked whether I could have a plain salad (I
don't even LIKE dressing, so it's more of a deal to me than just calories),
and I've never been refused (even if I had to wait for it). I try to ask
earlier if I know in advance there will be a salad course. But it's always
a good sign when you see dressing on the table. I wish that was the standard
way they did it!

And, I've already suggested in the buffet note the possibility of using a
salad bar for dessert purposes.

134.1open mouth insert ...MASTER::EPETERSONThu Oct 15 1987 15:2313
    I have also learned to open my mouth in restaurants for a purpose
    other than inserting food. Since I became a Vegetarian, it is
    essential that I know exactly what I am eating. I have been pleasently
    suprised many times to find that there is alot more to eat than
    is on the menu. I often get a yummy stir-fry veggie dish for the
    price of a dinner salad. Gerry, my fince, now kids me about being
    a "real cheep date". He often will join me in my meatless (and
    dairyless and eggless) bliss.

134.2Ya gotta make it worth their while...OVDVAX::WIEGMANNThu Oct 15 1987 18:3224
    Since I was a bartender before coming to DEC (yes, it was culture
    shock!), I can tell you that depending on the time of day you go,
    if the chef isn't busy, they almost appreciate the chance to do
    something different! Especially if you find a place that is not
    a chain or franchise. It helps if you go to the same place often,
    and get to know the people, too. So many people tip according to
    the total check that waitresses are afraid that by asking for, say
    one pancake, you will then ask for half the charge and their tip
    won't be as big, on top of the extra bother of asking the chef,
    etc... But if you frequent the place and are a good or consistent
    or reasonable tipper, they trust you, and will then go out of their
    way to do what you ask. Then if you bring in friends and let them
    know that you brought them just because of their special stir-fry,
    they'll *want* to do it for you, because they see it as $ for the
    business.

    This could be behind the reluctance of some fast food places to
    serve water - they see the cup as a cost, and you're not actually
    buying anything - no profit! A lot of places actually charge a
    nickel for a cup unless you buy pop/juice/coffee. Hey! one more
    reason not to go to 'em!

134.3ASK AND YE SHALL RECEIVEVIDEO::GANSMon Aug 21 1989 18:4810
    I was in a lounge in Cape Cod over the weekend and the waitress only
    brought over a dessert tray. Was I ever tempted. I asked the waitress
    if she could bring me some fruit and she went into the kitchen and
    after a while, brought me three slices of cantelope.

    Boy, was that good. Everyone had already finished their rich desserts.
