79.0. "I hearby resolve to..." by MASTER::EPETERSON () Mon Jul 13 1987 11:48

    I find that it sometimes helps to put down in writing a goal or
    objective I am working for. I make sure to include any specific
    reason for my effort as well as the expected benefit. Perhaps it
    would help if we all used this note for that purpose.

    Let me start it off with . . .

    .  .  .  My resolution to loose 100 pounds by March 12, 1988.
    I have already lost a tad more than 50 pounds since the beginning
    of last March.

    My reason for this objective (other than the usual and obvious)?
    On March 12th, I want to be the slimest trimest bride that I can
    be.

    I attended an organizational skills course taught within Digital
    and the instructor told us that by writing something down, with
    an exact result, time frame and cost, repeating that sentence every
    day for 21 days, behavior can be changed. They are called affirmations.

    Apparently, there's a real psychological reason behind it. Good
    Luck!

79.3Affirmations and VisualizationCSSE::MARGEan ergonomical delight!Mon Jul 13 1987 13:427
    Affirmations can be reinforced by "visualizations". Saying the
    words is fine but if you can close your eyes and visualize the result
    at the same time, you're bringing more of your senses to bear on
    the desired result.

I love it!!!! This is what I was talking about in
whatever note it was that I gave my "lengthy dissertation"
about positive self-talk. Wonderful topic, this !!

Some guidelines for writing affirmations to be
used with visualizations:

   An affirmation should be written in the first person,
   present tense. It should be VERY specific and should
   include a statement of the EMOTION you feel about
   the goal.

Example, re .0 and .1 :  "It is March 25, 1988, and I
feel absolutely sensuous as a slim, trim bride of xx pounds."
[Sorry, I can't seem to remember the exact words you used
to describe the way you wanted to feel, but I think you
get the idea.]

Then to use that affirmation with visualization, you relax,
close your eyes and actually try to experience what that
emotion and sensation feels like. Not by watching yourself
but by BEING yourself in that situation. It's the same
kind of thing that some athelete has used (can't remember
who) to teach people to ski better. You close your eyes
and actually FEEL yourself hitting the moguls.

What you're doing is rehearsing for your subconscious
what the new picture is.

    Some examples of my own affirmations:

    "I feel totally guilt-free about leaving food on my plate when
      I am done eating."

    "I feel liberated and free when I eat only what I TRUELY
      want and stop eating when my body is satisfied." (That's
      stomach hunger, not mouth hunger.)

    "I truely enjoy the tastes and textures of my food when
      I eat slowly."

    To saying no to foods that I don't need and stick
    to meaning   NO..
    I shall lose the weight for me and me alone.

    If I feel satisfied I will not finish all my food
    I will push the plate away...

    I hearby resolve to loose twenty pounds within the next ten weeks.

    I want to do this for my health and well-being.

    I know my body well and this will happen by eating a well-balanced
    diet and consuming anywhere from 1200 to 1500 calories a day.

    I will count calories and record exactly what I eat.

79.8for me!!!RDGENG::MCCARTNEYEnd-User Support ServicesWed Jul 29 1987 06:2513
    I will weigh 140 lbs by Christmas.

    I am doing this for me and no one else.

    -

    Also I have bought a tape and book on Self Hypnosis, which apparently
    really helps with setting your mind on a goal. I'll let you know
    how it goes!!

79.9Here we go!ELMO::STAFFONWed Jul 29 1987 12:0015

    My resolution starting today is to lose the rest of my baggage.

    All 30 pounds of it. I am doing this for me.....mememememememememe
    (and I will be greedy about how I feel about myself ;^>, unless
    of course some friends want my weight, I will be happy to pass it
    on to them  ;^>)

    Memememememememe. I looked in the mirror and realized that I AM
    the most important person this morning. I only get one crack at
    it while I am on this planet.....and I am going to do it in a size
    9 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

79.10SELFISH TO THE COREOBLIO::CHENAUSKYWed Aug 05 1987 16:3318

    I know deep down inside (yes, underneath it all) that there is this
    wonderfully slim, confident, friendly person hiding. I will not
    spend the rest of my time being self concious of my weight. I am
    going to lose every spare pound of it, and keep it off. I do all
    of this for myself, for my ego, the reflection in the mirror, and
    my self esteem. What I am doing is of extreme importance to me,
    at times it overides most other thought. I may dwell on it some,
    but it helps to keep me motivated, and to know, that next summer,
    I WILL be in a bikini again for the first time in my adult life.

    This resolution, does not have a specific time barrier other than
    next summer. But with the way I feel this very minute, I could
    lose it all with out a second thought. I need to keep this
    attitude, and will to the best I am able.

    Kim

	What an incredibly positive piece of self-talk!!!

	With your permission, I would like to extract
	it, print it out, and keep it in front of me
	at all times!!!

    Hi,

    checking in with weightloss lately, only support....If what I wrote
    will be of any help at all to you, please feel free to use it, I'm
    honored.

79.13MASTER::EPETERSONWed Sep 02 1987 14:0528
    OK! OK!!! It's time to stop "faahting around". I have only lost
    two pounds in the last six weeks. Don't get me wrong - I do thank
    goodness for small favors, but it just isn't enough! The wedding
    isn't getting any farther away and I have miles to go before I sleep.
    Add to that the fact that we want to take scuba lessons on our
    honeymood and you have plenty of reasons to go on a (yitch) DIET.

    Here comes the resolution.

               (long pause with deep, meaningful silence)

    I will go on a "DIET" for one week. I will not eat Hummus or put
    tahini in anything. I will steam everything (no more stur frying).
    I will move my food cut off time from 8:00pm to 6:30pm, and dinner
    will be only raw stuff.

    After droping 50+ pounds since early march it'll be interesting
    to see how fast things go. I'll keep you all posted.

79.14...to stay thin!STAR::YANKOWSKASDoug WHO?Thu Oct 15 1987 08:3024
    ...to maintain my weight within my goal range - for good!

    I am aware that it's one thing to lose the weight, and another thing
    to *keep* it off. BUT -- I feel confident in my ability to stay
    where I am, mainly because the Weight Watcher program has been the
    "Remedial Eating 101" course I sorely needed.

    In addition to continuing the good dietary principles I've learned,
    I also intend to continue my running program. After starting by
    walking three miles five times a week, and then running a portion
    of that, I'm now at the point where I'm running 30 minutes (I cover
    about 3-1/2 miles in that time) on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday,
    7 miles on Saturday (in a little more than an hour), and 2 miles
    for time on Thursday (the former track runner in me can't resist
    pulling out the stopwatch now and then).

    TO sum it up, I resolve to continue the good habits that I've learned
    over the last few months permanently!

    I RESOLVE to lose 15 pounds by 8/14...that gives me 2 1/2 months.
    I *AM* going to lose this weight and I would like someone to hold
    me to this!! I am a summer college-hire, and I'll be going back
    to school for my last year in August, so I will post my progress.
    I plan to lose the weight before 8/14, but that is when I'm introducing
    my boyfriend to my GORGEOUS best friend of years and years!!!:-)!

    I am tired of not liking myself when I look in the mirror.I am going
    to do this!
                                                    Dee Dee

79.16I hereby resolve to...VAXWRK::LESHINTue Jul 19 1988 12:269
...say with weight watchers until I am at my goal weight, no matter what!!!

I've been up and down for too long and down is the only way I want my
weight to be. :-)
