| I finally beat the campaign game (the "good" campaign)... took a while.
You cannot use the same strategy on every level. On some levels, you
need to buffer your forces before going into attack mode... on others
you need to go after enemy castles immediately.
The final level is quite long, and is difficult to conquer (I did it
the hard way... I took over the entire map before going after the
Archibald's castle).
A few helpful hints for those not yet at the final level:
You have the option to either search for the crown or to build up an
army for the final battle. Build the army. You will have the option
of taking one of three artifacts before you begin... I recommend the
shield.
On the "build the army" level, you don't have to worry about getting
jumped by enemy heroes... there is only one at the far end of the
screen, and he won't move. You have to defeat him. There is only one
city you can make into a castle on this level, and you want to do this
as soon as possible. Take the middle trail as far to the west as you
can. Before heading out, take over the sulfer mine on the southeast
part of the screen. May as well grab the treasure chests and mercury
lab, too, while you are there.
After you do this, make sure you take over all mineral mines (and wood
producers) along your way to the city. If you don't, it will hinder
your castle building progress. Don't worry too much about picking up
armies, what you have will get you to the city. Once you take over the
city, immediately make it into a castle, and built upon it every turn
while you send your hero around to pick up gold, minerals, and armies
(keep in mind you will drop any army you are currently using... these
armies are to fight monsters on this screen, so you don't lose any
armies built up in the castle.. you will want to have a full compliment
when you leave for the enemy castle.
Go ahead and fight as many monsters as you think you can beat... gain
as much experience as possible, it will help you when you fight the
enemy hero. While you are out collecting stuff and killing monsters,
don't forget to keep building your castle (it's a warlock castle, and
there are two upgrades you need to do to the dragon's tower).
If you do everything right, you should end up with 19 dragons (I've
tried this level several times, and this is the best I could come up
with... maybe you can do better). These are KEY for the final level.
On the final level, send Roland (the hero with Dragons and tons of
other monsters... if you played the hero right in the previously
mentioned level) to the experience generators (well, that's what I call
those little red/white structures 8^) ), and also to the power-ups
(the places that raise attack skill, spell power, etc.... there are a
couple of these on the right side of the screen). Don't waste too much
time, but these ability enhancers are helpful. Don't forget to send
Roland to a castle so he can get some spells (he starts the level with
a an empty spell book).
The first thing you want to take over are the Warlock castles that are
in the middle of the screen. You won't hold them all for long, but
make sure you take any back that have dragon towers before the 7th day
of the week (when the monsters re-populate). If you have plenty of
resources, go ahead and upgrade to a black tower on one of the castles,
and don't stray too far from it.
One very useful strategy is to get Roland's spell power & knowledge to a
high level, and get him the 'Demension Door" and "armageddon" spells.
Leave everything but the dragon armies to defend a castle, and
demension door to enemy castles/heroes and wipe them out. If you play
it right, you can take over 3-4 castles in one turn.
Another helpful hint is to find out which enemy heroes are the most
powerful, then go after them. If you can decimate their armies before
they can run away (or kill you), you will have done yourself a huge
favor, and will have made life much easier.
This game IS addicting... I have lost more than a few hours of sleep
going for just ONE more enemy castle. 8^) It's a great game!
