2.0. "Roll call..." by PEKING::NASHD () Wed Nov 15 1989 18:21

    Let me introduce myself.

(I guess I'll be the moderator, whatever he does.) I am based in
Reading and I'm in the RAF Regiment at Brize Norton.
I joined a short while ago; I had a look at the TA but it was not
for me, besides I'm too old now. Before that I was in No 1 MHU
    R.Aux.A.F. at Northwood.

Ian F. Philpott

reserve officer by virtue of some aged jiggery pokery - the army put me through
University and I had to sign in blood to get them to pay for my PhD.

I'm a specialist in ballistics - primarilary in the terminal ballistics of small
arms ammunition. I had a small part in the design of the newly introduced
Enfield Weapon System, but I mainly worked on the R&D for "special weapons"
(what James Bond calls 'Q' department :-)). The 'Tsingtao Dhum' nickname (means
'Black Lion' in Thai) dates back to a short period of field duty in Indo-China,
though my wife thinks it's a good nickname for me.

Currently I'm in Hampshire House, Basingstoke

I joined about 4 months ago, and I am thoroughly enjoying it, I
have started training to be a medic and hopefully will also be training
    as a HGV driver.

Didn't realise tho that PHIL is a member of the TA, there you go,

I'm in.

I joined the regular army in '72 and the reserves in '75, got out in '81
after 9.5 years.

I was a weapons specialist in the US Army Special Forces, 10th group & 11th
group.

Looking forward to this and to how various units arranged training
schedules and such.

7 years working as a RTO for Uncle Sugar in various Infantry and
    SF units.

When I got out though, I got out completely so I'll probably keep
my replies to a minimum so as not to step on those who this conference
is designed for. On the other hand, I may from time to time, add my
two cents on a subject I feel competant enough to comment on. No sense
letting all this experience go to waste.

BTW: I also have a growing library of Military Science reading.

    Some of these are:

    Clauswitz On War
    Jomini On war
    Xenephon
The Art of Deception in War
    Mao on Guerilla Warfare
    Sun Tsu
    Desert Warfare
    Frederick the Great

    Various others (excuse the spelling)

If any of these are or might be of use, let me know via mail. I'd be
glad to enter pertainent passages (within reason) to help the
    discussion.

    Technical Sergeant
    253 Combat Communications Group
    Massachusetts Air National Guard

I joined the Guard in 1983 after being informed that I was too old
to join the Active Duty Air Force. It turned out to be a good decision
    for me.

I originally joined the 267 Combat Comm Squadron as a Ground Radio
Operator. In 1987 I transferred to HQ, the 253 CCGP as an Information
Systems Controller working in the CFP (Communications Focal Point).

My job is to track the status of the circuits and systems used in
providing command and control communications, and to do whatever
is possible from an HQ position to aid the squadrons in maintaining
    the integrity of the systems.

Most of our active duty training is in Massachusetts, but we do
get exercises from time to time around the country. Every few years
we get overseas trips. The only one I've been on has been to Turkey.
I'm hoping to get to see more of the world some day.

I'm looking forward to learning about other units and sharing some
    stories and experiences.

I guess we need a little Canadian flavor, so here goes.
My name is Darren and I served 3 Years with the 1st Regiment Royal
Canadian Artillery. All over Canada for the first couple of months then
on to Germany for the remainder of my tour. I only served the 3 years
because of my desire to travel. I had the chance to go through Officer
training but turned it down. Right choice???? Not sure. But am now
considering Reserves. Although it is kind of a joke in Canada as they
are ill equipped for anything. The government keeps saying they are
going to do more but I doubt it. As our neighbor to the south spends
a billion dollars a day (I believe this is accurate) on defence Mr.
Mulroney says "Don't worry, be Happy" ;-)

2.17Some acronyms/abbreviations defined...CTD016::J_BUTLERLeave it better than you found it...Mon Nov 20 1989 17:2036
    Re. 8

Sorry about all the abbreviations and acronyms!! No, DEC is certainly
not the only place that uses such things! But, as copiously as we
(DEC) use them, I can't help thinking that we MUST have a lot of
old military folks out there teaching the 'skills' of acronym creation!
    :-)

OK, now for the translations of my abbreviations. etc!

    MAJ = Major
    FA = Field Artillery
    Bn = Battalion
    Ft = Fort
    G1 = G1 section (Personnel/Admin section on a General Staff. In
case, it was at Division level)
RSO/MSO = Recreational Services Office/Morale Support Office (BOY!
was I frustrated when I got THAT one, but it turned out
              to be a great opportunity!)
    G2/G3 = G2 and G3 sections, General Staff (G2=Military Intelligence,
G3= Operations and Plans. As EW (Electronic Warfare) officer
for the 4th Infantry Division, I was assigned to the G2
section, but worked with the G3. This was my favorite of
            all my assignments.)
HHB = Headquarters and Headquarters Battery
S2 = Intelligence section at Battalion, Brigade, Regiment, etc level.
In this case it was at Battalion level.

Maybe we should start a new note in the conference for definitions
of acronyms! Those folks in the US Navy have some ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE
acronyms that must surely employ many 'skilled workers' in the Pentagon
    to think up!!! many :-) 's !!!!

Thanks for asking, and sorry for the confusion!

2.21SAC::PHILPOTT_ICol I F 'Tsingtao Dhum' PhilpottMon Nov 20 1989 20:0622
Further to 2.2: since some of the readers here also read DEFENSE_ISSUES I will
add the following to my earlier sign in.

---

The Thai Royal Army has an elite force modeled on the SAS called the Tsingtao
Daang ("Red Lions"), because they wear a gold lion cap badge (a sort of National
symbol in Thailand), on a red beret. The Tsingtao Daang were trained by a mixed
force of British and American special forces who the Thais refer to collectively
as Tsingtao Dhum (Black Lions) because (a) they wear black work uniforms and
berets and (b) like some CIA (and British security operatives) they don't exist
officially. (they say that the missing cap badge is a black lion and so you
can't see it on the black beret :-)

Anyway for reasons I am not disposed to discuss I was stationed in Thailand
and Vietnam as an assistant to the Military Attache at our (Britain's) embassies
in Bangkok and Saigon, with a little field operational experience in Cambodia
and Laos, during 1967 and 1968. The "Black Lion" nickname dates to that
period, though I wasn't actually a training specialist...

Jeez, ya mean I finally get to be involved with the BEGINNING of

    Gentlemen (you too, Rich),

I'm Len Lorentzen working in the GIA at Acton, Mass. My life with
Uncle Sam started as a draftee in 1966 into the 1st Cavalry Division,
G3 in Korea. That's right, just a few months before the Cav was pulled
back to the US and redesignated the 1st Air Cav. Finished up Korea in
the 2d Infantry Division, then transferred into the US Air Force where
I spent 8 years as a Computer Repairman (hence my current life in DEC).

After 10 years of active duty joined the Texas Army National Guard in
El Paso as a Survey Chief in an 8" SP Howitzer Bn. Moved to California
and had a long break before I joined the California Army National Guard
in Ventura as the Fire Direction Chief in another 8" SP outfit. (Just
love working with 8 inches I guess) 8-). Promoted to Chief of Firing Battery
then First Sergeant before moving to New Hampshire.

I'm still a member of the California Army National Guard but looking
for a home out here. New Hampshire Guard wants me to drop a stripe
(I'm currently SFC, E7) to come in but I won't do it. It looks like
I'll be going into the Individual Ready Reserve to maintain my rank,
etc. Anybody got any ideas? My MOS (Military Occupation Specialty)
    is 13B.

I'm active in shooting Highpower Service Rifle and a member of the
    NRA.

    Glad ta meetcha,

True - the USS Constitution is the Navy's oldest commissioned vessel

I did the job....Just didn't work the Rate enough.

2.36former O3 - USNRBOXTOP::TARMEYFri Dec 08 1989 19:0156
    Hello!

My name is Bill Tarmey. Currently, I am assigned to Mid-Range Systems
in Boxboro, Ma. (BXB1). My role is doin' Quality Engineering 'Stuff'
for MSB - specifically, the '6000' Family of Systems.

I am no longer affiliated with the Military though I did spend eight
impactful years as a Member of the US Navy.

In the Summer of '65, after finishing a two year Tech School - where
I trained to be an Aircraft Mechanic, I decided to apply for the
Navy Flight Program. I ventured down to the Naval Air Station (NAS)
South Weymouth, Ma. and took the test. In July, I reported to
Pensacola, Florida to start Pre-flight Training.

The Navy Flight Program has two routes to follow. One is as a Pilot,
the other as a Flight Officer. I followed the latter.

After fourteen weeks in Pre-flight, sixteen in Basic NFO School,
and eight more in Air Controller School (NAS Glynco, Ga.), I was
Commissioned as an Ensign and designated a Naval Flight Officer.
My Commission was in the USNR, so I guess that qualifies me for
    this conference.

My first fleet assignment was VAW-11 at NAS North Island (San Diego,
Ca.) and included a WESTPAC deployment aboard the USS Oriskany
(CVA-34). I was deployed during the period of time that Johnson
opened up the North - our Air Wing spent many an interesting day
in and around Hanoi, Haiphong, and the ChiCom Border. Impact wise,
it was deemed that we had a successful cruise. Sorties flown, damage
done, medals awarded, etc. In seven months, we lost more than fifty
aircraft and thirty crewmen. Some are still there. I beleive we
had the distinction of having lost at least one of every type A/C
flown by the Air Wing. Don't know yet if that's positive or negative!

I left the fleet Squadron for an assignment as an Instructor back
in Pensacola, and spent the final two years of my active duty teaching
future 'Airdales' about Engines......That Tech Training really paid
    off.

After leaving active duty in Dec '69, I returned to school and
affiliated with a Reserve outfit (VP something-or-other) in South
Weymouth. In the three years there, I did manage some flight time,
made all my drills (needed the $'s), and did ACDUTRA at NAS Norfolk
in their VAW Air Wing, and as a Recruiter for NAS South Weymouth.

In '73, the Reserves were thinning out, and I had my degree in hand
and had found "real" work. The Navy and I parted company. However,
being Commissioned (don't know if it's the same for Enlisted), my
separation was not effective until 1979.

Anyway, that's me. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Navy, both
Active and Reserve. I made the comment in another conference that
I'm not sure that I'd do it again. Perhaps I've mellowed. I would
do it again.............if, I could be twenty-one again!

sure on how much more I'll go for after that. Time has become sort of

I'm enjoying the notes in this file, and altho I'm not much of a talker,
hopefully, I can contribute something here......

As far as SOPA (Senior officer present aboard) I believe Dick Leonhardt
qualifies as Navy Capt (06) since Ian was still LtCol (05) last I knew.

Now I have noticed that we have had a few SFC (E-7) enter BUT since

  Hi guys,

Firstly let me introduce myself, I'm Frank Russell from UBO
and at present employed as a Customer Service Engineer. I have only
resently joined the COMPANY so most of this is new to me.

I have resently left the Marines after serving with them for
    almost 12 years ( mixed feelings ! ), I held the rank of Sargent(yes
one of those guys.), but did not abuse that . Anyway more of that
later. For now, I'll just content myself with reading these notes.

By the way, is there any other Royal Marines out there ???

    Update to 2.7...

I have been added as a US moderator for RESERVE_FORCES. My background
includes a rather heavy emphasis on Information Security requirements
and 'sanitation' of documents to lesser classifications or
declassification. If you have a subject you wish to speak about,
but have a question concerning its potential for compromise,
please let me know. I will try to assist.

Remember, that as far as the DoD Information Security Directives
are concerned, the publication of classified information in or by
public media DOES NOT constitute declassification of that information.
It is the policy of DoD that classified information presented in
public be neither confirmed nor denied.

Further, even if the information is NOT correct, no comments should
be made regarding the false nature of the information.

Additionally, if you feel that classified information has been
revealed publicly, you should not point it out by responding to
the publication that they have disclosed classified information.

Remember, that the DoD Information Security Directives, US
Executive Orders on Security of Classified Information, and the
Official Secrets Act must take precedence over Company policy on
    notesfiles.

    Please be watchful!
If you have questions, please feel free to contact me at:

    CLOSUS::J_BUTLER, 8713::J_BUTLER, or SSDEVO::J_BUTLER. I'll try

Ed Bohrer QMC USNR-R currently drilling reservist.

Here is a long winded mixed Navy career mostly as a reservist.

			Surface Navy only

8/63-9/64 Started drilling as a reservist one night a week.

9/64-8/66 Transferred to a reserve ship USS Coates (DE 685) drilling
one weekend a month in New Haven, Ct. made QM3.

8/66-8/68 Transferred to USS Vammen (DE 644) Long Beach Ca.,
		  made QM2.

8/68-10/69 Went on active duty (finished college) as a QM2.
Assigned to USS Hickman County (LST 825) as the only
rated QM on board so I did all the navigation. I picked
up the ship in Guam and took it to Japan briefly then
spent the rest of my time in the Mekong Delta in RVN.
Our mission was to carry food, fuel, cement and ammo (up
to 1000 tons at a time of 105mm, 155mm and 500 lb. bombs
up rivers that were sometimes only a few hundred yards
wide), to the Army and Air Force bases in the Mekong Delta.
We would usually pick up supplies at Vung Tau or Saigon and
bring them to bases in the Mekong Delta like Dong Tam
(Army), Ving Long (Army), Bin Thuy (Air Force), Long Xuyen
(Navy) and a few other places in the Delta. We also
resupplied the mother ships for the riverine forces. Not
only did we get shot at going up the rivers but we also
underwent all the mortar attacks and troop attacks that
the Army did at their bases.

10/69-7/70 Back in the reserves on USS Harlan R. Dickson (DD 708)
		   drilling in Boston, Ma. .

7/70-9/75 Quit the reserves -- fed up with the Navy.

9/75-9/76 Back in the reserves as a QM2 in a Coastal Riverine
Division with PTF's drilling in the Great Lakes.

9/76-7/79 Quit the reserves again -- job conflict this time.

7/79-7/82 Back again, as a QM2 again, drilling on USS Mobile
(LKA 115) in Long Beach Ca.

7/82-8/84 Transferred to USS Racine (LST 1191) as QM1 drilling
		  in Long Beach Ca.

9/84-12/84 Transferred to USS Valdez (FF 1096) Newport, R.I.

1/85- 2/86 Transferred to MIUW 201 (Mobile Inshore Undersea
Warfare). We wore greens. Made QMC my first time
taking the test and going before the board.

2/86-11/88 Transferred to Military Sealift Command drilling in
Lawrence, Ma. Did ACDUTRA's in Rotterdam, Holland.

12/88-present Transferred to COOP MINE UNIT 2201 in Boston. In
training to be a Craftmaster of an 80 ft. YP. I will be
the "Captain" of the boat with a crew of 8 men.

I will probably stay in now until they kick me out.

years in order for the rate that I've enlisted at to become permanent.

I thought that the reserve_notes file could help me keep abreast of the
goings-on in the Navy and other reserves, especially since Desert Shield

sanity check on what's going on in my unit and the rest of the Service

    Hello,

I'm pleased to see that I'm not the only one from Holland!

My name is Lance van Til, 29 and was in the Royal Dutch Air Force for
nearly 5 years before I decided it was time to go and work for DEC.

I'm a 1st Lieutenant and am a Battery Control Officer. I was based in
Germany most of my time (after Officer School and training) at the the
12th Guided Missile Wing (in Holland the AF deals with all that flies,
including missiles). The last two years of my active duty I was Chief
of the Short Range Air Defense Unit (I'm a whizz at radars, watch it
    fighter boys!!)

My old unit no longer exists since we had nuclear warheads and they
were (fortunately) no longer needed, I worked together with US Army as
well (hello out there, anyone from El Paso??) and subsequently my
sister got married to an American officer.....

I'm one of the few oldies they make come back every year and I find it
very nice to stay in touch with the Air Force that way.

I still maintain a lot of interest in Air Defense and missiles in
    particular.

    Regards,

    Lance

Yes I'm with CBHU-7. I think our drills are on the same weekend

Not just EA. 3/4 of CBHU-7 'bees were from Rota.

I know Bob Parent well, I worked for him a couple of ATs ago. He
is the type of person that makes the Reserves program worthwhile.
But I don't think that CBHU's have EA billets, and now is certainly

I have still one year left in my studies and I guess I will be

I live in Helsinki, Finland and I served at Finnish Military in
the heavy coast artillery at -89. Now I'm only a member of
Finlands reserve forces which is more like an club where
the members are ready for emergencies. We are learnig mostly shooting,
self-defence, first-aid, survival techiniques, communications with
different radio equipments, resque techiques for different situations, etc.
We work a lot together with our military and our "teachers" are
    highly trained military officers.

I'm quite bored of computers so I will try to go next year to Finlands

    Hello Sirs, EP's and others...

My mane is Douglas A. Bourgault and I've been a National Guardsman
since 1979... Oh sorry, wrong place... :) Actually, I was an active
guardsman till 1989. I moved to Ca. and just never got around to
joining a unit out there... So they put me on Individual Ready Reserve
(IRR) attached to the Army Reserve Center out of St. Louis Mo. until my ETS
was up this past 7-Jun-91. I'm an E5 (SGT) with my primary MOS as a

I was enjoying my new found freedom of not shaving or getting haircuts
while on IRR when I got a notice this past Feb. activating me to Ft.
Jackson S.C. And being a tank mechanic, I almost knew I'd be playing
in the sands of Saudi... I reported as requested on 1-Mar, only to be
told that they were no longer taking reserves and please "enjoy" a
    weekend of "_restricted_to_base, bunked_with_the_reception_center_recruits
    on_UNCLE_SAM_until_we_can_process-you_in-and_right_back_out..."
military typical type thing... Now I was just informed that my ETS was
extended till 8-DEC-91!!!! Oh happy days!!! Actually, I'm seriously
considering extenting my enlistment for another 6.... (Why did I just
get a chill up my spine when writing that???) BTW, I've been with the
"other" military ( the right way, the wrong way, and our way) type org.
    (Digital), for 16 years.... ;-))

    Hello everyone,

I like to introduce myself and thank you for letting me join your notes
file. I'm Tom McCoy and I work in the semi-conductor business in HLO-2
(Hudson Ma.) and I'm also a loadmaster on C-5 aircraft at Westover Air
Force Base in Massachusetts. I've been with DEC since June of 74 and
worked in Maynard (ML07-1) and Andover (APO-1) during my eighteen years
with the company. My military duty consist of five years active duty
and 17 years reserve. I served as a loadmaster on C-123K, C-130E and
C-5A/B aircraft and also was assigned to an aerial port squardon.

                                                                  Tom McCoy

    An update to my entry.

As a part of the cutbacks I had to leave the RAF Regiment back earlier
this year. Well, I've been accepted with 4624 Sqdn. My new unit is
based at the same airfield as my old unit so at least I know the way.

4624 are an Air Movements Sqdn. I'll be loading C130's, Tristars and
VC10's mainly. People like loadmasters are going to become a part of my
    life ( hi Tom !).

I have to do the recruits course again though, in Sept.

My old unit, NMCB-12, has been retired as part of the defense cutbacks.

I have now joined the SEVENTH NCR (Naval Construction Regiment) in
Davisville RI. 7th NCR overseas all Construction Battalions and misc.
SEABEE units in the NorthEast (now including NJ, PA and the rest of NY)

CNO has granted permission for SEABEEs to perform flexible drills ...
a reserve year could still consist of 2 weeks active+12 weekends but if
a reservist desires, and there is a job that requires his/her skills, the
drill year can be performed in any combination up to and including a
single ~38 day active duty period (paid for 60 days).

I don't think I'll be changing my drill schedule ... unless the
location and job are just too tempting to pass up!

    Hi

My names Mandi, and I'm a wet behind the ears recuit with 2 wessex,
I've just completed my first weekend training, and even though I found
it pretty tiring, and realise that I've got loads of things to learn, I
had a brilliant time and can't wait for the next one.

Once my trainings over, I think I'll be joining the signals, but I'm
also interested in the transport side of things, We shall see....

Been reading lots of notes from this file and learning things already
so thanks for your help - By the way this is the first time I've ever
used notes besides read only, so I apologies in advance for an error I
    make?????

    well thats all for now

    Bye

Late last November in Reading town centre there was a display by
the Territorial Army Signals Rgmt. There was a leaflet handed
out inviting to attend an introduction and display evening. I
went to this and now find myself attending every Tuesday evening
        at:

97th Signal Squad, Royal Signals, Bershire Yeomanry

On the 11 of December I had the medical, unfortunately I failed
it and was deferred due to being slightly overweight according
to their height/weight chart. As I was only 6 pounds over I was
asked to loose the weight and return. Last night I had the
medical again, since the 11th Dec. I have lost over a stone :-)
I passed the medical and am really on the way to being attested.

As the basic fitness test time has reduced to 24 minutes for 3
miles I have also taken up running. When I started, half a mile
and I was on death's door. I can now do 3 miles if 24:13 -
24:46. As I am over 30 (just) I get an extra minute. On Tuesday
8th Feb. we have that BFT to run, wish me luck.

Well, last weekend I attended the Recruit Selection Weekend.

I have never worked so hard in my life...

But at least I passed and I am now accepted into the TA.

Out of the 8 that started in my syndicate we ended up with 3 active
(but rather stiff and sore) members and two invalided with injories.
The 5 that were left all passed.

My turn, I suppose

I'm Gary Greer, currently a drilling reservist at NARCEN (Naval Air
Reserve Center) Denver, Colorado. I spent a little over 12 years on active
duty in the U.S. Navy, and enjoyed most of it. I got out as an AT1 (Aviation
Electronics Technician, E6) and probably will retire in a year or so as an
AT1.
I'm a contractor debug electronics tech here at CX02 in Colorado
Springs, putting some of my navy training and experience to good use here
working on disk drives for Storage, soon to be Quantum.
Many of the enclosed notes have been interesting, and I've added
my $0.02 worth on occasion.
