268.0. "Stadium news...." by PCBUOA::WALLS () Thu Mar 27 1997 12:37

    From ESPN Sportszone:

    Connecticut Gov. John Rowland and his aides had dinner with New
    England Patriots owner Robert Kraft in Boston last week to discuss
    building a new football stadium in Hartford, the Hartford Courant
    reports.

268.1Keep it in Foxboro...PCBUOA::WALLSThu Mar 27 1997 12:4920

    In my opinion this is too close to the New York base to consider moving
    there. Hartford is having trouble supporting a hockey team being the
    city's sole pro sport, never mind a football team. And Hartford is far
    enough away from alot of New England to discourage some people from
    going.

    If anyone in Conneticut has a chance it would be the Foxwoods resort,
    probably because they would build the whole stadium off of casino
    money, hoping people who were going to go to the game would do some
    gambling too after the game. They also have the land to do it.

    But personally of all the proposed sites I hope they stay in Foxboro
    and build a new stadium next to the old one. I still love the fact its
    away from the city and its a good atmosphere.

    At least try and keep the location somewhat central.
268.2let's talk "central"PATE::NEFFjust doin' the Mad Ticker...Thu Mar 27 1997 17:0210

   I agree, that would mean they should move north of Boston. Haverhill
   and Tewksbury are both trying to bid for the Pats. These locations
   would be more central to all of "New England" than their current location.

    Hmmmmm ...... with the Whalers taking a hike, the State of CT may be
    overly aggressive in trying to lure the Patsies.

    Regardless, in the end it will be Kraft's decision and I doubt he would
    pick Hartford for many reasons. There are too many "better" picks than
    Hartford, where Hartford has the same problems every other pick has
    (like tring to convince the people and businesses to foot the bill).

    Although the Foxwoods resort, although not central, would be very
    enticing for Kraft. He would'nt have to deal with any politics as
    the tribe (I forget which one) owns the land in the miidle of the woods
    and the tribe would probably not only foot the bill for the stadium
    but give Kraft part of the concessions too. The Foxwoods resort gets
    about 60,000 potential customers.

    They could also use the stadium for concerts...

268.5The real question, Who will finance the stadium??NETCAD::NPAREFri Mar 28 1997 12:0037

	re- last few.

	It definitely would be nice to keep it central to the New England
 states or keep it in Foxboro, but since he lost his bid for the Southie,
 Kraft specified three requirements to be in place to win the Stadium.

 #1- Ample land to build the stadium.

 #2- Ample land for parking.

 #3- $150 Million in Financing (actually should be #1).

	The last requirement scratches Mass. because every Politicos have
 stated no public financing for sport/private enterprise. Rhode Island,
 and Connecticut are thinking about it, but wondering how much the public
 will tolerate paying for........

	Foxwood/Tribe (as -1 stated) would be more likely to pay for a Dome/
 new stadium because of the potential customers it would attract to their
 casino. Talibue(sp?), in the past, promised a SuperBowl in New England
 if their is a new stadium built (especially if domed), which would attract
 deep pocket customers.......

	One problem/issue, the NFL reputation, and gambling..... How would the
 public respond to the Stadium/NFL team placed next to a Casino???????
 Everyone is very sensitive to the idea of game fixing (I'm not saying that
 it happens, but sometimes I get the feeling when a team is driving down the
 field at the end of the game and stops short on the score that would beat
 the line)........

	And let's not forget Cleveland who would pay a King's ransom for
 a crack at another NFL team, and to kick the Raven's butt.........

    Tagliabue has already stated that this would not be a problem, that
    they could build next to Foxwoods.

    As far as financing its funny how the Fleet Center got its name because
    although Fleet Bank financed much of it, a good majority of the financing
    was from public funds.

    So if they financed the Fleet Center with public funds why not help out
    Kraft too.

Unless the new stadium is domed (which I, personally, would not like), New
England has a zero chance of hosting the Superbowl.

    and even if they build a dome, they'll only get the obligatory "1"
    Super Bowl.

    Nobody wants to party in a cold city, regardless of how warm the game
    is.

    The Super Bowl should have a permanent home in New Orleans.
    Great City all around and they really know how to put on
    big events like this.
