1852.0. "Intermittent failure writing to network drives" by GIDDAY::WALKER () Tue May 13 1997 04:42

PATHWORKS for Digital Unix 5.0g ECO2
Approx 90 win3.1/win95 clients (tcpip only).

Customer is having intermittent problems writing to network drives since
upgrading to 5.0g ECO2 (from 5.0f).

Error message is make sure disk is not full.
(There is plenty of disk space)

Problem affects all users at the same time and clears itself fairly quickly
(between 5 and 20 minutes).

I have checked lmprobe output and can see no evidence of a problem.

I have also received an IRIS trace from the customer of a client attempting
to save a word document seven times - six failures and one success.
To me (not an expert in reading traces) the successful attempt looks exactly
the same as the failures.

Both lmprobe and trace are available via anonymous ftp if anyone is
interested. (stevo.stl.dec.com:/dumps/q50177)

Two queries:

1. This customer has used permit tree in the past and as a result has an 11MB
accounts.lmx file. Is it possible this is causing such widespread problems?

2. Customer is running an old version of Unix (3.2A). I have suggested he
should upgrade but am reluctant to push too hard as I have no evidence that it
is related to the problem. Any views on 3.2A and 5.0g ECO2?

Thanks,
Richard Walker.
