1762.0. "What is a client printer?" by R2ME2::ALANTAM () Tue Feb 25 1997 20:16

    Hi,

I am a Digital UNIX engineer responsible for printconfig component.
printconfig is a system configuration application to help user
to configure printers. And in Steel release, PathWorks support
    will be added.

One of the requirements of printconfig is to able to configure
"PathWorks client printer". What is the meaning of "PathWorks
client printer"? Does it mean printer which is connected to PC
and the PC is a client of the PathWorks advanced server? Or
printer which is connected to the PathWorks advanced server?

I found that after I installed the PathWorks advanced server to
my AlphaStation, PathWorks added two entries to /etc/lprsetup.dat.
They are clientps and clienttxt. According to the "PATHWORKS for
Digital UNIX System Guide.", they are used for printer which is
connected to a client. Does it mean the printer which is connected
to a PC? I followed the steps to configurate it but I could not
print anything to my PC printer.

If I disinterpreted the meaning of client, please correct me and
let me know when to use the printer type of clientps and clienttxt
as my printconfig application may need to handle them specially.

    Best regards,

Hi Alan,

"PathWorks client printer"

It's a printer which is connected to PC.
Currently by two ways clispool or lat.
The printer is seen as a service of Pathworks server.
A new method is appeared with PATHWORKS 32 in which
a Unix user can print to printer connected to a PC (WIN95,..)
via TCP/IP.
For trouble shooting you should find some useful info in this conf.

Regards,
Jean-Pierre
