1736.0. "Cannot do long filenames with Win95" by BALTMD::vous.cop.dec.com::bigsby (I do Unsupported) Tue Feb 04 1997 11:14

I can't seem to get long filenames to work.

My customer is using Digital UNIX 4.0A and Pathworks 6.1 ECO1 on
the server, and Windows95 on the client.

The name space on the volume is OS2 and DOS. When I remove the
DOS namespace the client cannot see the volume anymore.

I have added the SupportLFN entry in the regestry with a value
2 just as the Windows95 resource guide says I must do, but it does not
help.

I have searched this notes file, and can't find any detail that
I may be missing. Please point me to another file if I am not looking
in the right place.

Thanks

Hi Stan

I am not sure to understand well.

With V6.1 and WIN95 you can create long file name on server's share
either a filename or/and dirname.
But we still have a 12 Char. max limit on sharename (with no space).
Is it what you are requested?
An example can help.

Hi Jean-Pierre

I'm sorry I didn't mention that I was talking about Netware
services for Digital UNIX. I cannot create or rename a file with more
than the 8.3 constraints that DOS implies.
When I create a new folder I get a new folder named "fldr". When
I try to rename the folder to any other name I get an error message
telling me that the file is not found.

As for the namespace issue.... If I do not give a volume a DOS
namespace, the clients will not even map to the drive. I get an error
saying that the network name is not found.

Thanks
