1717.0. "TCP/IP, NETBEUI: routing" by FRUST::LINDINGER () Fri Jan 24 1997 07:17

We have a huge customer with heterogeneous environment.
He is going to move into another building and the isolated network
environments will be connected via routers.
The Digital Pathworks environment will also be concerned.
They run Digital Unix 3.2 and Pathworks V5.0G with TCP/IP as protoco
    and Windows PCs.

NETBEUI is not routable. My question is:

o Will there be problems with NETBEUI being used across routers?

o Though TCP/IP is used, I fear that NETBEUI is tunneled for specific
functions. What does this mean for routing?

o Can somebody tell me which functions are concerned (Enhanced
    Redirector, etc.)?

o Which configuration files should I check for possible
    implementations?

I would appreciate your help, hints, etc,
though this question might have already
been asked... and like always, I need the information soon.

    Regards
     Andreas

Andreas,

Since Netbeui is not routable It cannot go through router.
So no way to use Netbeui.

I suppose you mean Netbios instead of Netbeui."Tunneled" is not a good term.
I prefer "Netbios is implemented over TCP/IP".

The problem with two nets linked by a router is the BROADCASTS.
On the V5 server the License, Netlogon, Netbios name resolution are done by
sending
broascasts over the net.
Generally the routers do not route this broadcasts, but can be set as an
option.
You have to permit resending broadcasts on UDP port 137 and 138 in your
router.

From your PC it depends of the configuration.
With pathworks client V5/V6 you may have to use inetname for license request.

And I always try to answer soon. :-)

Hope this help.

    Jean-Pierre,

    many, many thanks.

With V6, I heard, it is possible on the server side
to add addresses of other servers into lmhost. No broadcast would then
    be necessary.
