646.0. "PATHWORKS for W95 V1.0A requesting a 5.1 CC license" by CTHU22::M_MORIN (Mario Morin, Hull CSC - Canada) Tue Jun 03 1997 20:51

Hi,

I have a customer who claims that he is getting his PATHWORKS
for W95 V1.0A clients to request PWLMDOSCC05.01 licenses in
order to get access to his PATHWORKS server and it's working.
He is able to access his PATHWORKS server.

Does anyone know if this true?

Can the licensing software do that?

Is it legal?

I thought a W95 client count only legally request a V6 license
or more recent.

the licensing software can request ANY type of license...

PATHWORKS for W95 v1.0a REQUIRES a v6.0 license... the software doesn't
car, but legally the customer must use a v6.0 license....

re: previous

Jeff (who is quickly becoming one of the world's leading experts in PATHWORKS
business practices) is, of course, 100% correct.

The only place where licenses are currently checked for the purpose of code
execution is in PATHWORKS server code. We do not currently check of a proper
license on the client for the purpose of allowing or disallowing it's use.
So, even if the client didn't request any license, the client code would still
work.

The client can request any license because there are *many* combinations that
would also be legal. For example, in this case, the client *could* be
requesting a V5.1 CCS license solely for the purpose of gaining legal access to
a PATHWORKS server and the customer could also have a V6.0 CNS license that they
might request...or just keep in their desk drawer...that makes it legal for this
client to be using the W95 V1.0A code. (I doubt if that is what's going on in
this case...but it is possible.)

In any case, the LAN Manager licensing code for this client could request any
of the following licenses:

	PWLMDOSCC05.00
	PWLMDOSCC05.01
	PWLMDOSCC06.00
	PWLMOS2CC05.00
	PWLMOS2CC05.01
	PWLMWNTCC04.01
	PWLMXXXFP05.00

to give it access to the PATHWORKS LAN Manager servers...and it would work fine.
...by design.

John

(John W., are there any limitations on the "AT" licenses that these clients
 would accept?)
