610.0. "Dell Latitude Hangs at Boot with PW Win95" by VMSNET::DMCFARLAND () Mon Jan 27 1997 11:43

Hi gang! I hope someone has seen/heard of the following...

PC is a Dell Latitude laptop with a 3Com 3C589-C network adapter
and Neomagic video adapter. It also has a Cirrus logic bridge
PCMCIA socket adapter, which appears to be a bridge to the PCI bus.
    (Hence, device cannot be removed...)

This works fine with Windows 95 (for netBEUI connections) and will
still work with LAT running. As soon as DECnet and PW licensing are
installed, the PC hangs at the Win95 logo during boot. Thinking it
had to be the video adapter driver, I had customer change video to
display 16 colors. No good. Finally, she changed to the generic
Win95 standard VGA video driver. Still no joy. This makes me think
it is not the video, but then what...? Customer has a similar laptop
on the network, but it has a Digital network card and does not have
    the Cirrus bridge.

We can remove DECnet/licensing and it works again. The 3com card is
loading the regular Win95 driver and does work on the network. No
devices show any conflicts or any problems in device manager. The
config and autoexec are clean. Win95 is v1.0a. I plan to get her
ECO2, but don't have much hope... Ideas???

    Thanx,
    Diane

diane, do you have access to IPMT cases that were escalated to
engineering? CFS.43974 was one reporting a hang on reboot after
installing PW-W95. resolution was to install the latest drivers
    from Cirrus.

    Hello,

I checked the IPMT CFS.43974, and it discussed a bug in the
sys$ewdriver. Are you sure this is the IPMT you meant? Also,
I am aware of an elevation due to a problem with Cirrus VIDEO
that was fixed with a new Cirrus driver. However, the PC in this
case has a Neomagic video adapter. The Cirrus device is a PCMCIA
bridge which I believe connects to/from the PCI controller... Is
    there an IPMT about that?

ops, a typo on my part, it was cfs.43874, issue was resolved with
update to Cirrus video driver. maybe the Cirrus PCMCIA bridge
has a similar problem?? or maybe the Neomagic video adapter
has the same problem that Cirrus video had?

Thanx for clarifying. That was the elevation I knew about. At one
point, I suspected the Neomagic video may have the same problem.
However, in the Cirrus case, it worked with the video set to 16 colors
or when standard VGA was used. In this case, it never did--even with
Win95's Plain Jane VGA driver. I suspect it is a similar problem with
this Cirrus PCI device's driver. Customer has decided to return this PC
to Dell due to hardware incompatibilities with PATHWORKS...

    Thanx for the input.
