<--- Exactly! No mater where you go, there you are!

Seriously though, I hate being lost and will ask for directions if they
are readily available. For instance, I drove through a neighborhood one
day, maybe eight or nine times, real slow and looking at all the houses
very closely looking for my friend's place. The last time I drove
through, someone came out into the road and stopped me and asked if I
was lost. Real helpful chap. Had a nice shotgun too. :-)

About half the time the directions I get are wrong. If possible,
I'll get a map and try to locate the address on the map. I can
    follow maps pretty good.

Back in my trukin' days I learned that the first time I hit a new
city, I'd stop at the first truck stop, buy a map, call the company for
directions, then map out my route. Usually worked. Found out the hard
way that wandering around the neighborhood in a big-rig is not the
thing to do. Some places you cannot back out of ;^(.

Most men won't ASK for directions because it imply's they are
not capable of resolving the delema of being 'lost'. And EVERYONE
knows men are avid problem solvers. Wouldn't you men agree.

Why is it that these snivilig git questions about sexism and sterio
typing prevail when this note starts to warm up. Why is it they
wyminazi get their jollys out of such crappie? Why don't you ask this
question. Why can't women keep their gums and teeth together when the
guy is trying to read the map, or get a sence of where he is? If your
some dam smart, why the hell don't you drive the dam car? Why is it
that men must drive the dam car and wymin sit their on thier tush's
giving orders like some sort of general? 8^)

Yea! If we want to be stereotypical how come women can't read a map.
She sits there in her comfortable passenger seat, giving wrong
direction, refuses to let the guy look at the map, and then bitches
because we don't stop and ask somebody! Cheesh!

Have a few beers, let your wife drive and if you can't find it the gods
don't want you to find it anyway.

My wife used to be in lace and she was doing as many miles as me. And
the two jobs are freely interchangable.
only reason I tend to drive and she map reads is that the drivers seat
on my car is about an inch lower than the front passangers seat and at
    6.4 every inch helps.

    regards, Michael.

Actually, another point, my nine year old has a much better idea of
where we going than the grown ups bickering in the front.
So take the kids when navigating

Actually, I hate to drive - I'd much rather be the navigator, which
I'm, reasonably good at doing. I also hate to waste time, so I'll
usually ask directions once I'm convinced that I can't possibly figure
out where I am...which varies depending on who's in the vehicle with me
    at the time...;-)

A previous S.O. was very fond of driving, one of the reasons I miss
her. Unfortunately, her preoccupation with always being at the wheel
tended to carry over into other areas, and hence she's a "previous"
S.O...and I therefore don't miss her all that much...;-)

Definitely get the kids to navigate. It stops them getting bored.
We have been doing this for nearly 20 years. If there isn't an
available kid then I usually navigate while my wife drives. She has an
honours degree in geography, but she can stand my navigating better
    than my driving.

Usually we only have problems if we don't have an adequate map, and
we now have maps, including town plans, for most of Britain, France,
Northern Italy, ... Getting a good map is one of our highest
priorities when visiting a new area.

I don't know if men's stereotypical refusal to ask for directions is any
worse than women's stereotypical mangling of directions. "You should have

I never get lost, my wife reads the map, if we're lost, it's

Um, no, Columbus was looking for the West Indies. When he got to America,
he was so sure that he had made it to the West Indies that he called

Curious - what would a woman who was sure she had made it to the West
Indies have called them?

Interesting and timely topic as I have been teaching my 6-year-old how to
    read a map...

It all started when my wife sent me down to the local "Toys R Us" to
fetch anything Power Ranger. Well, they were all sold out (didn't even
have that Rita Repulsa doll for my mother-in-law...) so I took the
opportunity to browse the games aisle to see if they had any of my
old favorites. Sure enough, there was "Battleship" and even though it
was recommended for ages eight and above I purchased it to play with
my son. He was excited when I got home and we immediately set out
trying to sink each other's fleet.

The fundamental ability needed to play this game is that you be able to
reference a point on a grid via two coordinates (same as finding a city
on a roadmap, a cell in a spreadsheet, longitude/latitude, etc.). My
son has become quite adept at this and not only can sink my ships but
find different places on a map (you can even make a game out of doing
this). I'm glad I found "Battleship" as "Candy Land" was getting pretty
old and I HAD started to put on weight...

Oh yeah, a word of caution: the fundamental ability needed to WIN at
"Battleship" is to be able to conduct binary search patterns. Although
my son would score some quick sinkings, I would usually end up winning
the game and this sometimes led to frustration. What I did was hack
together a DCL "Battleship" Simulator which he can play to effectively
learn "seek and destroy" methodology. I have included a copy at the end
of this reply if anyone is interested in trying this technique...

So, has anyone tried this with their daughter?

actually, asking for directions, when you're travelling, is a fun way to meet
the locals! so what's wrong with asking for directions? on the other hand, when
you're methodical in getting to where you want to get to and pool your efforts
together when there's more than one travelling, the need for asking directions
hardly ever arises...!!! :-)

i am just back from a month long vacation which consisted of touring several
european countries and countless cities. in that time i stopped to ask for
directions just once. well all i ever did was to get to the town center and
then out again. for keeping general orientation, my european road atlas
depicting all major routes would suffice in most cases, and in towns where i'd
stay for a while, i'd get a city map from the tourist office.

since i was travelling with my kids (ages nine and seven), it occurred to me,
that when i was travelling with my dad as a kid, it always seemed to me then
as if he knew where he was going like he already knew the place and that i
must be giving the same impression to my kids, with regards to general
direction. as regards the detailed work, involving the children in the search
was both a great help to me and a lot of fun for them.

Except if you are somewhere where you can't understand what they are
saying. I remember getting gas in Tennessee once. I was embarrassed
when I couldn't understand when the guy asked if he could check my oil.

...Your all missing a very important point here. Men have an
instinctive need to explore the unknown. We like to hang out at the
fringe. Theres an edge we are always looking for, which gives us a sense
of purpose and fulfillment. Anything that is a challenge intrigues us.
We believe there is nothing that cannot be worked out with a little
    logic. It's genetic!
I believe there are some basic differences between men and women,
and I am not refering to the obvious. This need to push beyond what is
comfortable and familiar is just human nature. Men seem to possess
this trait more so than woman. The reason we won't ask for directions,
can be traced back to our ancestry and the "Thrill of the hunt".

When we talk about what is instinctive, we usually point to evidence showing
that some behavior exists in individuals with no contact with others of their
own species. Otherwise we could be confusing something individuals are taught
with something instinctive.

When we talk about what is genetic, we usually point to inheritance patterns
like those of Mendelian genetics. In favorable cases, we can associate genetic
traits with particular markers on chromosomes.

Do we have any evidence like this?

If not, I'll suggest an alternative. The need for independence and certainty
are partially taught. In my culture, they are taught more strongly to men than
to women.

-It's definitely instinctive, as our avoidance of communication with
others to obtain directions re-inforces the instinctive behaviour!

Yup. Right up there with the instinctive need to maintain control
of the remote control...;-)

140.30Ahhh! the remote..a moment of silence please!CGOOA::MALONEObtuseWed Dec 28 1994 20:437
I think that remote control ownership/rights falls under the
constitution in all countries, which rightly supports the instinctive
ownership issue. Give me a car without a map, and a remote control,
and there is nowhere I cannot go, and nothing I cannot see...

I can usually find just about anything if I have a map. However,
I have had a couple incidents where the map has been incorrect
or incomplete. One such incident was when I ended up out in the
middle of the boonies in Washington state on my way back from Canada
because the map showed the road going through to another road
    when it didn't.

Another was when I found myself wandering around a rather unhealthy
part of Dallas with a simi-trailer truck at 3 a.m. after I encountered
an underpass that my truck wouldn't clear.

Stephen King has a *great* short story out called "You know they got
a hell of a band" that describes the consequences of a man's driving
    stubbornness vs. a woman's.
