'Deadbeat' dads make easy target for Weld

  Your Jan. 17 editorial
("Weld's modest agenda") on
Weld's State of the State Address
should be commended. It is one of
the few pieces to appear in the
Globe with a balanced approach
to issues of fathers and children.

Indeed, how DO you help children
by putting their fathers in jail?
It's so PC for Weld to "crack down"
on deadbeat dads -- a sure applause
line. What most people don't know is
that the state is already casting far
too wide a net and putting large
numbers of innocent fathers in jail.
Most "deadbeat dads" in Massachusetts
are men who were laid off, demoted,
fell sick, became legitimately
disabled or are themselves living in
their cars because of lack of funds.
I have personally witnessed a young
man who lost his job led off to jail
in handcuffs because he was $500
behind in child support, and there
are hundreds more like him.

  Weld is correct that fatherlessness
is the biggest social problem we face.
Let's get serious about this problem.
Macho talk about putting fathers in
jail will help no one.

There is a fast-growing movement of
fathers who are sick and tired of being
vilified. If politicians can't hear
us yet, believe me, they will.

Until the witch hunting has stopped the swelling. There will be
    justice.

Good to hear someone bringinging this issue to light again.

I wonder when, if ever, the Globe will ever run articles dedicated to
Father's Rights, esp. visitation, and how they are routinely trampled
and ignored, while the courts turn a blind eye to it. But then again,
it's not 'PC' to talk about Father's Rights.

253.3Write your political reps.SALEM::PERRY_WThu Jan 30 1997 11:5915

This issue is really a hot button for me so I'll try not to rant and
    rave!

I certianly hope Edwin is right about a "growing movement of Fathers
to be heard" because it's about time.
If you do believe that Fathers have been slandered by politicians and
the media all you have to do is write a letter to your State Rep,
Governor, and especially to the Media who go to great lenghths to
bash and blame men/Fathers for everything. Both men and women should
write. Simply call the reference section if your local library to
obtain the address/tele# of those who claim to represent you in the
political process. It's that simple!! Just do it!!

253.4Journal Magazine's cover story for FebruaryNAC::WALTERFri Jan 31 1997 11:2612
There is a great article in Journal magazine this month (February).
Actually, its the cover story called "And baby makes two - The men's
club shifts aim in divorce reform".

It offers lots of tips like names of organizations and lawyers that
will help you in your fight for equal rights as men in regards to
    your children.

253.7Channel 7 -- divorceSPSEG::PLAISTEDSubspace Gaseous AnomalyFri Jan 31 1997 16:416
Channel 7 in Boston. MA is airing some segment about divorce tonight at 11.

I seem to recall hearing something about "She got the kids, the house, ..., and
he got a double bypass. What you need to know about divorce."

Don't know how much info will be in this twinkie report.
