697.0. "WHAT DO YOU CALL A FEMALE "STUD"?" by HSOMAI::BUSTAMANTE () Tue Dec 10 1991 17:34

Have you ever heard an equivalence for the term "stud" for a female
    subject?

I am talking about those women who are not interested in a committed
relationship at all but would rather play the field. They are
(sometimes) available for a "roll in the hay" but not for anything
where deeper feelings might be part of the agenda.

Usually they are very good-looking so they don't seem to have any
trouble pursuing their hobby. And it's not just me 'cause I've heard
    other men discuss them.

Have you met a woman like this ?

I'm afraid they're usually called, er, "sluts".

That's the term I use for male subjects too. E.g., "Joe's sure been
    slutting around since his divorce."

It's not nearly as nice sounding as "stud", I'm afraid, but at least I
don't confuse it with cyberpunk or leatherwear...

They are often called sluts. They are often called ice queens, meat grinders,
and the like.

They frequently annoy men who try to control them because they control
their own sexualities, thereby becoming a focal point for male negativity.
"This one isn't acting in the way I expect." It's vexing to many men.

Added to this is the fact that "anyone who gets more sex than me is by
definition, a slut." ;-) Except that most men that get more sex than me
are looked up to whereas women are looked down upon. Strange dichotomy
we are conditioned to.

Sometimes someone who is playing the field, is/maybe a canidate for
AIDS. Hopefully they are playing with a full deck, and practicing safe
sex. Other than that, some male stud is thought of as a womanizer,
studly stud, a dirtbag who leads with his loins vs his brains. Woman
have been already identified. The slang of Americans can be decieving
with the passage of age and generations. There exist a new slang for
the same game. Men and women chasing eachother. Nothing wrong, nothing
    right. Just life.

Funny, in the divorce game, if a woman has extra marital affairs during
the divorce, so what... The guy playing the same game, he is branded as
a rasputian. And hence this is very negitive. Not the stud that some
men want to be identified with.

    re title/basenote,

I thought they were called "nymphs." "Sluts" I believe can be either
male or female. "Studs" are male.

This could _very_ well be an instance if "I don't do that, and I'm
jealous of those who do, so I'll pretend that I'm better than them."

    That said...

I don't think "stud" is complimentary at all. It implies "someone with
the maturity of a seventeen-year-old." It suggests "someone with the
emotional depth of a slime mold." Stud indicates user, exploiter, out
for just one thing, insensitive, a jerk. A stud is the kind of person
that gives the rest of us great guys such a bad rap with women.

I'd call someone who has sex without experiencing emotional engagement
    "dysfunctional."

How did you come up with such a disgusting question,
have you talked to Earvin Magic Johnson

Earvin Johnson referred to the (supposed) 2000 (or more) woman
with whom he had sexual contact as "deseased" and
as the cause of him now having AIDS

Sex to him was ok until he (allegedly) contracted AIDS in
heterosexual relationships ... he still feels no sense of
    personal responsibility

Some people do feel that stud is complimentary. I do not. I generally
see it as being derogatory. Someone who sleeps around a lot is not
behaving "good". Be they male or female. Call them slut or stud. Same
    thing - neither complimentary.

Chamberlain, in his autobiography, says he slept with 20,000 women.

Johnson said that he never lacked company, intimating that there
were hundreds (if not thousands) of sexual encounters. While not
as active as Wilt alleges, he was no slouch.

697.23QUARK::LIONELFree advice is worth every centWed Dec 11 1991 13:088
Consider that there's a TV show called "Studs", but not one called "Sluts".

It is true that men who "sleep around" are looked up to but women who do the
same are reviled. I sometimes wonder whether if Magic Johnson had been
a female athelete who had had sex with hundreds of men and contracted AIDS
that she would have been considered a "hero" as so many seem to find Johnson.

697.24CRONIC::SCHULERHave a nice Judgment dayWed Dec 11 1991 13:2014
Steve - Martina Navritolova (sp?) questioned the same thing in an
    interview...

When I talk with my sisters, or my male friends, I usually hear
"stud" used as a description of a very good-looking man, rather
than as a description of a man who sleeps around. In other words,
"stud" = "hunk." Because of how common this usage seems to be,
I don't automatically assume anything about someone described as
a "stud" (except that they are probably very good looking).

These same people use "slut" (or "tramp") to describe both men and
    women who are.....well, sluts.

697.25LATIN OR ANGLOS ARE NOT THAT DIFFERENT ABOUT THIS!HSOMAI::BUSTAMANTEWed Dec 11 1991 13:3613
We seem to have uncovered another example of discrimination on the
    basis of sex, don't we?

So "stud" is almost a compliment (hero, good looking, albeit
promiscuous) and "slut" is (IMHO) derogatory, right ?

It's funny but in Spanish we don't have a translation for "stud", I
guess that form of behavior is either ignored or accepted in the male.
There is a term (vampiresa), for a similar behavioral trait in a woman,
which comes from "vampire", I am sure. Very prejudicial, too.

    necessarily implying that he does.

The only people I've known (of either gender) who go in for this
kind of behaviour are usually pretty wounded, pretty emotionally

    Alice,

Judgement? Nope. Carefull observation? Yes. Many of us are not of
the one night stand. Like em, one at a time. And when we are done. We
move on to the next relationship. One person at a time, for that time.
Talking on multi relationships, more than one at a time. Nothing wrong
with it. If everyone knows the rules and the game played. But if your a
victum of it, not knowing whats the whats. It seems kinda cruel, cold,
    sick.

Many of us do not like to boast on how many women we have notched up
on the end of our reproductive organs. Guess perhaps thats my het view.

Of course it's a judgment. Declaring a person dysfunctional is a
    judgment. That's not to say it isn't a correct judgment. It's a
judgment I myself am not willing to make. I can only say that for
myself, sex without emotion is, as the result of some early
    experimentation, uninteresting.

"Puto" in many countries in Central and South America, means a man
who is oversexed, thinks with his glands, can't think of anything but
sex, etc., etc. In Mexico it's often expanded to "puto y cabron."
"Cabron" means "he-goat," so it's sort of redundant, like "stupid idiot."
Definitely a pejorative -- at least, I've never heard it used admiringly.
