681.0. "Hair cuts...." by MACROW::SEVIGNY (Dress code: 4 tooth minimum) Thu Nov 14 1991 11:44

How much do you pay for a haircut? I just got yelled at for paying too
much (granted, I don't have that much to cut, I should get a low-volume
discount). I paid $19 for a cut and "style" (I hate the sound of that,
I much prefer "cut and dry"). It went up $2. I want to make sure that
    I'm not getting ripped off.

$10 including tip. Seems like a lot but I do get a good haircut.

>(granted, I don't have that much to cut, I should get a low-volume
> discount).

I tried that once but was told it costs extra when they have to go
	looking for the hair. :-)

My coiffure is delicate and demanding. Only the most discriminating of
stylist can handle such a delicate affair. What I pay must remain
confidential - only my hairdresser knows.

Now, all I fear is that there are those readers who have met me and
they will probably tell a different story.

Welll there are many of us who have nothing to mow.... So the sounds of
a snipping sizors or a shaver passing over the top of our glowing
scalps are more than a welcome thought. Aaaah! Yes, when we were
    younger......Sigh....

The place I go charges $12 for men, $16 and up for women. This
disparity seems to be rather common. The guy who cuts my hair
will usually spend upwards of 40 minutes on it (not that I do anything
fancy with it, but my hair is thick and is difficult to cut), and
I think the money is well spent. I've been to the $8 places a number
of times, and though sometimes I can get a good cut, often I don't,
and I'd rather pay a bit more for consistency.

I did go into a barber shop at the SF Airport once. Paid $6 for a
    shower. :-)

I currently pay $5 for a cut and $1-2-3 for a tip depending on quality
and effort. Folks who know me will probably believe this. :-)

BTW, I used to go to more upscale places (real barber shops?) but I
got tired of being told the same old lines, "You'll never go bald"
"Wow, your hair's as thick as a horses tail" "You really should get
your hair cut more often" "You should treat your hair with this stuff"
    etc., etc.

Continental Academy of Hair Design. Yes, I admit it, a school.
The students are polite and always do a good job. If you're
fussy, it might not be good enough but I have no problem with it.
The one I go to is on Derry St., rt 3A in Hudson, NH. If they
really do a good job I tip $3.

I consider myself to be quite fornunate in that I'm able to cut my own

proficiency level I now enjoy (without benefit of classical-barber
training) and some folks even compliment my hair.

Don't know what the exchange rate is these days UK Sterling/Dollars,
but my husband pays 12 pounds for a cut a blow dry in a Unisex
hairdressers, which I don't think is excessive. Certainly, London
rates would be more (we work in Basingstoke). Where we live, further
into the country, he would pay about 9/10 pounds. Still sounds a lot
    compared to the States.

I would pay about 16 pounds for a cut and blow dry.

What do you get for $50 that I don't get for $10? My hair looks
just the way I want it. And my wife is pleased with it as well.
What more can a guy ask for from a hair cut.

And if and when it goes it goes. It's no great loss. Hair is
generally more trouble than it's worth. Yes it was nice when it
was thick enough to keep off the sun and in the heat but it's
thining out has everything to do with genetics and nothing worth
speaking about to do with who and how it was cut.

Over the years I've let a few barbers trim my beard, and without
fail every one of them have messed it up. They cut it so short that
it looks like I'm just starting to grow it again. Only I trim it now.

well my main man manuel does a fine shave, though i doubt he
makes any money on it since its a time consuming process
(time better spent knocking off a couple of regular ear-lowerings
at the regular price). but a professional shave is a treat..

I went to a technical school that also had a barber college,
Milwaukee Area Technical College. Needless to say, being a
poverty-stricken student, I got all my haircuts there. At that time
(1968-1970), they also taught shaving and after the student barber
talked me into trying my first barbershop shave, I was hooked! Pure
    unadulterated self-indulgence (sigh)!

I asked my barber (who, incidentally, gets $7 for a haircut) why he
doesn't offer shaves and he said that there is (1) a lack of demand,
    (2) extra overhead in the way of a steam cabinet and towels. The main
issue, I expect, is a lack of demand. If only all men knew what they
were missing, I expect demand would skyrocket.

Teh last time that I had a shave from a barber was in Bolivia just
before I was coming home. I hadn't shaved in about three weeks, and
the experienced had me shreiking in pain. The barber got a kick out of
it. No blood, just lots of tears.
