510.0. "hair loss prescription meds" by SOFBA1::PHILP () Thu Sep 20 1990 14:32

My husband is considering going to a dermatologist re: hair loss.
I know there is another topic in here about hair loss but no one
had anything to say about the new prescription medication available
    (Rograine??) or is it Minoxidil?

Does anyone have any experience with this or can recommend a good
dermatologist in the greater Marlboro area?

Note 55 contains a number of replies about Minoxidil, which is sold by
Upjohn as "Rogaine".

I will point out that purchase of minoxidil is typically not covered by
insurance. I know it is excluded from the Digital Medical Plan's PCS
program.

It has been written that a preparation of the following, left on
the head overnight for twenty-one consecutive nights will
reverse the process of hair lose common to gentlemen in our land.

		One measure crushed Dock herb.
One measure crushed Rose Bay Willow herb.
		Two measures crushed Ground Elder.
		Two measures whole Ash seeds.
		One measure powdered chalk.

Make ye the recipe into a potion and apply to the head at the
stroke of midnight when the full moon shines and Mars is present
in the Archer. At the end of the ascribed period one should
perceive the sprouting of hair once again.

And after preparing the potion and waiting for the right time
you will no longer care if you have hair, because you will be
engrossed in the earth and its bounty and the wonders of the
heavens above. How many of know when the full mooon will again
be in the Archer? How many of us can put our hands on a measure
    of Rose Bay Willow herb?

Hormones weren't really meant for growing hair anyway.

Well there is good news. The most common form of hair loss is male
pattern baldness (thinning in the front on the sides and a roundish
patch in the back) Those of us who are experiencing this should are
victims of higher testosterone levels (the male hormone). The only
thing as of yet that is shown very effective in hair regrowth is the
female hormone (not sure of the name which was given). One BIG problem
with this is that when ingested, this hormone makes a male impotent.
There is some experimentation going on with using the horomone
topically along with monoxodil. It's seems to be working fairly well
this way. This is from what I remember while listening to a
    dermatologists talk radio show.
