502.0. "Women fall for Mr Average" by TMCUK2::NAIK (Man with the Eastern Charm) Mon Sep 10 1990 15:37

Men attending the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association
in Boston spent more time than usual on narcissistic research in front of
mirrors.

They had just listened to a scholarly address on what American women look
for in assessing facial attractiveness in the opposite sex.

The ideal, according to a study of 250 women college students, is a face that
combines large eyes (suggesting cuddliness), a small nose (warmth), and a
prominent chin and bushy eyebrows (power and sexiness).

The study, conducted at the University of Louisville in Kentucky and the
North Carolina State University, used computer-imaging to blend faces. One
key finding was that more "average" the face, the higher the rating.

Mr Michael Cunningham, a psychologist, said his researchers had measured the
dimensions of eyes, noses, chins and smiles.

He said that the most appealing face was one that offered a curious blend
suggesting maturity and child-like qualities. The man who was too babyfaced,
or whose sharp features were too intimidating, however, drew less applause.

The psychologist said that if a woman was especially interested in men with
large eyes, it suggested she preferred her partners "cuddly". In that case,
she should ask herself: "Is this guy cuddly, or does he have just big eyes?"

Politicians are vulnerable. "Dan Quayle's baby face didn't serve him well for
seeming intellectually acute."

This will probably be in Cosmopolitian or some such mag as a way to get
'the perfect man.' I really find these to be sooo shallow. I would
never want a woman who chose me because of some study of what nnn finds
is xxx. Who knows, next month yyy magazine may have a 'new' research
into some area of nebulish data. This easily swayed woman would
probably then dump me because of this new yyy mag.

What follows is a description of the average male:

              2 arms
              2 legs
1 face (I was going to say head, but we know where that'd go)
1 set of sexual organs (which sometimes have a mind of their own)
              1 torso
2 hands (sometimes more when on a date)
              2 feet
1 neck (sometimes neck may be optional)
hair (in my case getting redistributed)
1 brain (amount of use depends upon individual & circumstances)

502.28not the average, the opposite...FRAMBO::LIESENBERGKierkegaard was right...!Thu Sep 13 1990 07:4921
Wrong, it's not that women fall for Mr Average, the truth, as new
pschological research reveals, is that gererally men and women fall for
    the WRONG one.
Dr Frederichs, who is a renowned German psychologist, said that his
research and surveys show him that men and women tend to fall for a
person that can NOT fulfil their yearnings and expectations...Why?
Because it's said we subconsciously look for someone who can solve our
childhood fears and behavioural shortcomings, and therefore we often
end up with people that are our diametrical opposite. Simply said: if
you're over-active, you fall for an over-passive person etc. Therefore
many relationships end up having very serious incompatibilities, for
due to the mismatch in expectations, finally the fear, the feeling of
being threatened and losing one's identity takes over.
Mind you, this was written in the enjoyable last page that brings the
"news you can discuss about at lunch time with any half-wit", like some
lion running away from the zoo, the occasional plane crash, Dan Quayle's
last blunder etc, but still it's interesting.

Seems as if we're all emotional masochists somehow, eh?

What the hell is Vegemite? Seems in Germany we're quite an
underdeveloped country when it comes to that, even though we get to see
Aussie rules Football in cable TV (which looks like a schoolyard in a
frenzy to me...even though the female audience sometimes appreciates
the revealing trunks and shirts of the players, or at least they make a
    great joke out of it..)...
Seems two good Australian friends of mine failed miserably at expanding
    my narrow horizons...

Isn't vegemite similar to the British Marmite...which
is horrible stuff. It's some kind of yeast spread that
they put on toast and make sandwiches out of. The smell
is 'orrible too....though if you have sinus problems
a whiff of the stuff might cure you. :-)

Vegemite is available in the US if you look hard enough. Bonnie's comment
was referring to Mike V's wanting to have some, and Hugh Thomas brought him
a jar at the spring H_R party in Colorado.

502.32Vegemite better than Marmite any day!GIDDAY::WALESDavid from Down-underThu Sep 13 1990 23:5815
    G'Day,

Vegemite is like the British Marmite (but ours is better :-) ). It
is a yeast extract and is very good for you. Normal use is on toast or
on nice fresh bread sandwiches. It can also be used with boiling water
as a kind of beef drink - a lot like Bonox. It really is a product
that you either like or you hate.

Sorry Steve but because of time differences I only get to answer
notes about 12 hours after the US enter them. If anybody wants to know
anything else about Vegemite or indeed anything else Australian then
mail me as we really should now return to the original topic.
