403.0. "Reaffirming Valuing Differences" by TLE::FISHER (Work that dream and love your life) Wed Dec 27 1989 16:56

Here is a memo from Corporate Valuing Differences (Vd) about a Vd
Reaffirmation program to be held near Martin Luther King Jr's
birthday.

What Vd work have you done in the past year that you enjoyed or did
not enjoy? How has this work helped you at your job? What work would
you like to do in the future?

January 15th, the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., also marks the
beginning of a year of reaffirmation at Digital. We are choosing to reaffirm
the principles of Valuing Differences and Affirmative Action on Dr. King's
birthday because we believe that he stood for many of the same values that are
woven into our work in this area.

Please join us in celebrating our REAFFIRMATION by weaving this theme into any
program that you may be creating in your site to honor Dr. King. Also, please
send mail to SOCIAL::VALDIFF announcing any event that you are planning so that
we may include it in January's On-Line Valuing Differences Calendar.

Attached you will find the following:

[I'll put these in separate replies:]

o Letter of introduction from Alan Zimmerle, Corporate Affirmative
Action, EEO and Valuing Differences Manager.
	o M.L. King/Reaffirmation program ideas.
o Some internal resources available to you.
o Some external resources available to you.
	o Text of excerpts from:
		- "I Have a Dream" speech.
		- "Letter from a Birmingham Jail"
		- Words by and about Martin Luther King, Jr.

In addition, every U.S. site and every U.S. Personnel Manager will receive two
copies of a Martin Luther King, Jr. "REAFFIRM" poster around January 1st. Keep
your eye out for it!!!

Please let us know if there is any way we can provide additional information
or support.

All best in the New Year.

 				REAFFIRMATION

In 1990, we will begin a year of reaffirming and refocusing on the
principles of Valuing Differences and Affirmative Action at Digital. We
are doing this because diversity is more important to us as a company
than ever before. Given the increased global nature of our business,
the changes we are going through as a company, and the diverse makeup
of our present and future workforce, it is important to take time to
stop and reflect: What have we done in this area that we are most proud
of? And where do we choose to go from here?

We plan to mark the beginning of our reaffirmation on January 15, Dr.
Martin Luther King's birthday, because we believe that Dr. King stood
for those same values that are embodied in the principles of
Affirmative Action and Valuing Differences at Digital.

It is a tradition in our company that in many sites we come together on
Dr. King's birthday to honor the values he espoused. Should your
organization plan such an event, we ask that you weave this theme of
reaffirmation into your program. There are at least three levels at
       which you might do this:

o As an individual: Examining what this work means to you, and
reaffirming your personal commitment to Affirmative Action and Valuing
       Differences at Digital.

o Interpersonally: Among the group that gathers to honor Dr. King,
consider reaffirming those values among yourselves and to one another.

o Bringing it back: Bringing our commitment to this work back to each
       of our work environments.

Please join me in making 1990 a year of reaffirmation for Digital.

Best wishes for a happy New Year.

I have the Martin Luther King Jr. writings. If people are interested
in having a copy, just send me mail.

Since this is MENNOTES, it might be a good idea to focus on Vd work
done on men's issues and where we might want that work to go in the
future.
