267.0. "Big Brother Assoc." by FDCV03::COLLOPY () Mon Aug 22 1988 21:07
I'd like to encourage any guys 18 to 80 yrs old to consider
joining Big Brothers. This is an agency that pairs fatherless boys
aged 7 to 13 with volunteers willing to provide some time. I have
been a B.B. for 2 years in Boston and 5 years in Phx. The time spent
with the 2 boys has produced many enjoyable moments and challenges.
I find that spending time with a 10-11 yr old boy provides a much
needed contrast to the everyday work grind.
The only prerequisite is a commitment to spend 4 hrs/week for
at least one year. (note: 4 hrs is an average figure, you may not
see the boy one week but spend 2 days camping the next..) The goal
is to provide a strong role model while enjoying yourselves. There
is a long waiting list in most large metropolitan areas.
I have copies of some B.B. brochures and would welcome the
opportunity to answer any questions and brag about my 2 Little
Brothers. I will include some phone #s for the New England BB/BS
agencies. Most large cities have a B.B. agency so look them up or
contact the US headquarters in Philly for the closest agency.
Thanks,
Steve Collopy
