242.0. "diapers & discrimination" by IND::LOKIETZ (Support mental health or I'll killyou) Wed Jun 29 1988 19:09

I saw a show on NBC last night, entitled "Of Macho and Men". One
of the pieces they ran was about diaper changing areas in airports,
etc. They were pointing out the fact that nearly all changing areas
are currently in women's rest rooms, and that a father travelling
alone generally has to change his child's diaper on the floor in
    the waiting room.

The Syracuse, NY, municipal airport put in a special diaper changing
area open to both women and men travelling with small children. This
was the result of a lobbying effort by local feminists (led by a
    former NOW national president).

Are there any fathers out there who have experienced problems in
travelling alone with infants due to lack of such facilities, or
other problems related to single parenting by a father? I'm
    curious about this.

(The show, in general, focusses on the changing role of men in today's
society, and in areas (such as child custody) where men feel they
are discriminated against unfairly. I think it is a short series
to be aired on Tuesday nights.)

Absolutely! There were many times while traveling with my infant
son that I found myself changing his diaper on the floor. One
    small step!

I just read in Inc. Magazine that Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream headquarters
in Burlington, Vt. has such facilities in both the men's and women's
    rooms.

I just wonder how many people bring their babies to work. I wouldn't
want a teething kid to get too close to a pint of Heathbar Crunch.
