217.0. "Official Mennotes party planning note!" by 2B::ZAHAREE (Michael W. Zaharee) Mon Mar 14 1988 18:31

This is the official mennotes party planning note. Rules are as
    follows:

    1) DON'T DISCUSS who can or cannot attend. Parties announced or
discussed in this conference are open to anyone who wishes to attend.
I suppose the one exception to this might be excluding children.

    2) DO DISCUSS when to have a party.

    3) DO DISCUSS where to have a party.

    4) DO DISCUSS other party arrangements. Only one offer to bring
    potato salad per party PLEASE!

    Don't screw up!

I think that trying to fold a MENNOTES party on top of a general
event like Springjam is not really worthwhile. It will be difficult
to find people and to talk, and to escape the music if you don't want
    to hear it.

I like the idea of a party at Mike Foley's.

    Re .3

I think noters parties are a wonderful idea for those Digital employees
who live in Massachusetts or New Hampshire, but the point you have
raised about Colorado Springs is a valid one. While it certainly makes
sense to stage a party where most of the Digital employees are located,
it also ought to be a matter of noting courtesy to recognize that a
significant number of people are automatically excluded by reason of
geography. Any "official" noters party is really just a New England
noters party. I would suggest that we need a little consciousness
raising to recognize that this is an international network, and that
people should acknowledge that the rest of the world exists by
prefacing statements or notes with limited geographical interest with
phrases like "for those you in the New England area..." I would also
suggest that the title of this note be changed to "New England Mennotes
    Party".

Perhaps, since you brought this issue up, you could start your own
Official Colorado Noters Party. Whether or not you could get enough
people to attend is another question, but at least it is worth a try.

To prove my point, I ran a directory listing of this conference through
a series of command procedures. The goal was to count how many note
writers in this conference come from which parts of the world. I based
the count on node::username, so it does not take into account users
writing notes from more than one account. It also ignores node ids
that my command procedures were too dumb to process, such as node
numbers. I therefore do not guarantee 100% accuracy, but these numbers
do provide a good indication of the noter distribution:

    Massachusetts: 360 52%
    New Hampshire: 138 20%
    Colorado 50 7%
    Other U.S. 76 10%
    England 46 7%
    Other non-U.S. 27 4%

In other words, assuming that these numbers are a fairly accurate
representation of participation, 28%, or more than a fourth, of the
participants in this conference are not New Englanders.

Some more noters party history from the person who started these
       	things...

We do NOT exclude anyone from participating! We try our best
to schedule parties when people are here on business. We've had
people from Oz, U.K., France, Italy, Greenville, S.C. (Who WE
noters flew up JUST for the party), Colorado, etc... In "the
old days" we would have at LEAST one terminal hooked up with
upwards of 6 PHONE conversations going. One party we had the U.K.,
Westminister, Japan, France, us, and Oz on all at one time!!!
       	It was GREAT!

In the spirit of this note, since there is Greg, Carla, myself,
and I know of at least another 'silent "read only"' noter,
what's the chance of pulling off our own get together? I've only
been to one, and that was the Sunbird Meet in '86 when Andy Leslie
flew in from England. In COLORADO notes I am aware of another
attempt to reconvene at another get-together, but I don't know
whether it was successful or not. Could it be accomplished by
    3 people spreading the word?

    Just a thought.

    Sherman

P.S. I wouldn't mind going back east, but man, that would be one
hell of an expensive get-together. I know the party experience
and the meeting of eastern noters would be worth the expense,
but, knowing me, I'd probably pout when the party, in the course
of an evening, came to a close. I'll keep chocking up those
flying miles for the 'fly-anywhere-I-want-to' ticket and await
    the next eastern party.

217.27Midnight operators make better .....COMET::AIKALAFuture Lamborghini OwnerFri Mar 25 1988 12:0932
    Alan,

That must mean you're a 'midnight operator' or you work with Security.
I started this stuff in the Air Force and thought for sure I'd have
gotten a job with normal hours by now. But you're right, half the parties
going means that we midnighters have to tailor something in our
schedule, i.e., go to the party, bypass all alcoholic beverages
and to make things worse, leave EARLY. If the party was a bomb,
no problem, but if it's cooking, boy do you feel a sick day coming
on! Your loyalty to work is sorely tried, but in the end, you must
go to work (he said from the corner of his mouth.)

To make matters worse, my days off include all of Sunday, which is wasted
by sleeping it away, Monday, and Tuesday until midnight again.
Is that nauseous or what? Oh well.

Carla: on where to have one...

How about low numbers (under 10) and your apartment? :*)

Seriously, Studebakers, happy hour on Fridays are a blast, the Sunbird
was great the last time, (the lights were low, the lights of the
city were blazing, etc. etc.). I have a great clubhouse at my
complex, except the thing closes at 10 p.m. Its under new management
however, and I know the Manager (she had me once before....as a
resident at another complex ;^), maybe she'll bend rules. But
I don't think we need to worry much about double digits in the way
of attendance, unless......I just thought of a human megaphone that
    I know.....whatever.

OK, y'all. I think moving from April third to April tenth
is a good idea (the third being Easter and all). Now, about this

Aw Carla! I wanted to go see "Beetlejuice" on Saturday. If
there are big things to move, can we do it in the morning (nine-ish,
    perhaps?).

Has got to be one of the craziest movies I have ever seen!

Upon request of several MENNOTErs, I have extended the invitation
to our "Colorado" party to Human_Relations and Colorado notes on
an RSVP basis...I guess that means I can discriminate, huh???

Just so I know how many walls to knock out before the party,
I'd like to get a bodycount. Please send some mail if you plan
    to attend to BLITZN::LITASI.

Remember to bring munchies, something to sit on, and your choice
    of liquid refreshment.

    Again, date/time: April 10th @ 3pm

It will be nice to meet all of you!

Anyone in the mood for another Colorado springs party?
I'm in the mood and more than ready to go and was thinking about
saturday july 9th as being a good day to hold a barbeque.
It would be open to all except young children my house is too adult
oriented and making it child safe would be a real hassle.
Please send mail NEXUS::GORTMAKER if you are interested.
