213.0. "Single Male ?..beware on Monday th 29th" by STING::BARBER (Skyking Tactical Services) Fri Feb 26 1988 18:54

Its leap year and that means that this month (Feb) has a 29th day
to it. For those of you uninformed about these things, Feb 29
is Saddie Hawkins day. those of us males that are single had best
be prepared to head for the hills on Monday, or face the consequences.

One other interesting thing to/about leap year is that is is
"quote/unquote" socially accecptable for women to ask men out
for dates. I guess we'll all have to wait and see what happens...:-)

As it turns out, Monday morning I received a phone
call here at work. A voice from the past (5 years ago) was
on the other end. She made the usual small talk for a few
minutes and then asked if I would like to get together.
Hmmmmmmmm I said. Why in the world would she decide out of
the clear blue to give me a call and ask me out? It was this
morning, when I logged into Mennotesm, that I got my answer.
In short, YES, some people do believe in that old custom ;-)

On Feb. 29th in 1976 I asked Neil to marry me and his answer
was he didn't know. I told him it was a yes or no question.
We'll be married 12 years this June.

Well.. I asked Bob out... we started to have dinner, when an emergency
happened at my house, that I had to go home for....

So.. we didn't get to have dinner together, and now he'll have to
wait four more years to see if anything was planned for after dinner

Bonnie, does "the whole year" mean that after 31 December 1988,
men can come out of hiding?

Or do we need to lay low through next February 28? :-)

    Bonnie,

I know I have the whole year to ask, but I am still that old fashion
female who waits to be asked first :-)

Maybe in four years, if Bob hasn't popped the question, I MAY change
my mind though... We have only been dating for two years (this
month!), so I have quite a long while to go I think...

Alan, I think in most cases men can come out of hiding at the
end of 1988. In your case however....perhaps early in the 21st
    century? :-) :-)

Bonnie, to be safe, maybe I ought to wait until the middle of the
21'st century. That way, I'll be past my prime, and by then, they
may have even outlawed attorneys. :-)

    RE: .15

some men who don't mind being exposed. :-) :-)

aw Alan, come on...lay low? What about all these notes about
woman asking men out, etc.... I thought that was what you were
    all waiting for!

I didn't even think of asking someone out on that day (have had
my hands full lately :-) ) but I wouldn't need any special day
to allow me to do it anyway. I'd just need the courage :-}.

I thought that Feb 29 was called Sadie Hawkins day, and that the
rule of the "women ask the men" applied only to that day. Guess
I have to brush up on my Lil' Abner.

cj, it's not getting asked out that I'm concerned about.

It's answering yes to a proposal of marriage that concerns me
(although I'm sure my lawyer is licking his chops at the
possibility of handling another divorce for me. Visions of
Mercedes are running through his mind right now, I bet. ) :-)

213.19In your case, bad news AlSTING::BARBERSkyking Tactical ServicesWed Mar 23 1988 18:1920

I've come to the the conclusion that theres too many Bobs
associated to this conference and conversation. One could
     really get confused quick :-)

But on the other side, Traditionally via the archives of
Lil' Abner, it is traditionally accecpable and correct that
a woman may ASK a man out during the ENTIRE year of a leep
year. The most significant day thou is leep day, which is
Feb 29 or best known as Saddie Hawkins day. For traditionally
it was accecpable and proper that a woman could ask a man
to MARRY her and he HAD to accept.

So, for any of you that didn't know, thats the story. Thats why
Lil' Abner use to "head for the hills" each Feb 29. Now of course
as for me, if I had Daisy Mae a'chaceing me, I don't think Ide
be running all that fast ;-) As for being asked out by some lady,
the rest of the year, well that remains to be seen ;-)

    re .21

Not quite 5 to 1 yet. Seems more like 3.5 to 1.

Then again, I can only speak for this immediate
locale (Palo Alto/Northern Santa Clara Co.)

If there are census figures for this (?) I'd
    love to see them.

Consider that demographics have changed since
the days of the draft, WorldWar[n], Korea, VN...

213.23IPOVAX::BARBERSkyking Tactical ServicesFri Mar 25 1988 16:1114

RE Last few ...HUH ?????? The way I understood it was that via
the last nation wide census, there was susposely
something on the order of a ratio of 2.7 women to
men between the ages of 20 - 50. Now that ratio
may vary by geographical area of the country, but
overally there has always been more women then men
                    on a nation wide basis.

Does anyone out there have the break out of the
actual figures ? Besides that, what would one do
                    with .7 of a woman ??? :-)
