40.0. "Do you sleep in the nude?" by SWSNOD::RPGDOC (Dennis the Menace) Tue Dec 02 1986 12:23

What do men like to wear to bed? When we were kids we probably
all wore whatever pajamas our mothers bought us for Christmas, then
as teenagers we started making up our own minds.

Climate and other conditions have a lot to do with it. When I served
in the Navy it was in warmer climes and I slept in my government
issued skivvies. Living in an old, cold New England house I now
have a collection of nightshirts, flannel in Winter, and lightweight
cotton in Summer. The flannel ones tend to be longer. I find them
very comfortable and look forward to getting a new homemade one
    every year from my mother-in-law.

I wear my flannel nighty in the winter when it's not.

Nothing at all! I do have some pajamas, but never use them and so
invariably forget to pack them when I travel. It has been an
embarassement on occasions, when I stay in a hotel. I usually have
breakfast in my room, and a couple of times, got woken up by the
"femme de chambre" who did not have a passkey. I had to get up &
pull on some clothes quick while she got impatient at the other
    side of the door!

40.16Sheets? Blankets? What are they?RDGE28::SADATMornington Crescent!Thu Dec 04 1986 13:166
You have to remember that over here in Europe most of us use duvets, having
dispensed with the old sheets, blankets etc years ago. If you've got a good
duvet, nothing else is necessary, winter or summer! (Except perhaps in the very
coldest weather, or when extremely sick...)

40.18RDGENG::LESLIEAndy `{o}^{o}' Leslie, ECSSE. OSI.Thu Dec 04 1986 15:294
Otherwise known as a 'continental quilt', a duvet is a bedcover
stuffed with 'down' or, more usually, high-tog manmade materials.

We've had one for years and wouldn't swap it for a dozen sheets.

Just kiddin'... But one time when I was about 14, I stayed
over my friend's house (for the first time). We were in his
room, I think, and I was on a cot or a roll out bed or something.
We were in our pajamas, about to go to sleep, and he noticed that
I had my hands under the covers. He then said that his mother
always told him to sleep with his hands above the covers (and
he did just that). Sigh... We were both good Catholic boys...

    A slight tangent....

I came across a sewing pattern in a magazine yesterday. It was for
a kimono/bathrobe sort of thing, boxer shorts, and a camisole.
All in the same pattern pack, and all *unisex*.
(Not that I'm thinking of making my SO a camisole, I should clarify..)

What I liked was the idea of boxer shorts as "nightwear" for both
genders - and the couple modelling them looked great in them.
But then, I may have been a little distracted by the guy in the
    boxers ;-)

Couldn't help laughing as I read some of these comments as I tried to
picture myself getting up in the middle of the night to comfort
children, usher them to the bathroom, or just sit and rock them, and
doing so all in the nude.
With children in the house and the need to do the above most every night,
jammies and a robe are a necessity. Otherwise I would freeze to death
or embarass myself and kids. Besides, thunderstorms and bad dreams
usually someone to stand by the bed and request to move in with mom and
    dad.

Me sleep in the nude? Can't right now. Besides, what would happen if
you died in your sleep, imagine your embarassment.

On a practical matter, if house catches fire, estimates are that you
have about 2 minutes to get out.

When I was married and my kids were younger my parading around nude in the
middle of the night was no problem...they weren't embarrassed by nakedness
and neither was I. It was normal. Even as they got older they were used to
seeing me naked and to the best of my knowledge it did not cause any problems.

After their mother and I were divorced, and they began the biweekly rituals of
staying in my apartment, they seemed to be a bit uncomfortable, so I discontin-
ued the practice. But to the best of my knowledge they were never embarassed
nor was I. I only wish now that I had exposed them (so to speak) to naturism
then.
