15.0. "Fat-On/Fat-Off TV Ads" by PSYLO::WILSON (Beast of Bourbon) Thu Feb 04 1993 12:07

    Is this coincidental?

    How often is a weight-loss ad on TV preceded or followed by an ad for
    some fattening food (like pizza, ice cream, and so on)?

    This seems to happen a lot! Is it an insidious plot of some kind, or is
    it coincidental?

    On the one hand, we're given the message: "Be svelte!" On the other
    hand, we're told to give in to tempting treats.

    No plot here at all. The mightly dollar rules the air... whatever
    advertises, sell. It is up to us to buy what WE want, not what we see
    on the screen. We are supposed to be mature, intelligent people, making
    the right decisions...

    Pay attention to magazines as well. Many of them, especially the ones
    geared toward women (Family Circle, Woman's Day, etc) will contain
    articles on how to make totally sinful desserts and calorie rich
    dinners followed by one on how to lose 10 pounds in 2 weeks. It is
    indeed a conspiracy.

    What's probably happening is, the audience that spends the most
    on gimmick diets also spends the most on junk food, so both kinds
    of companies rent time or space to reach that target audience.
