343.0. ""Daddy's Little Girl" Substitute" by SAVAGE::FINK () Tue Jul 07 1987 18:45

I am new to writing in this file, but have been reading
for quite awhile. I've noticed other "wedding-type" questions
but none that help me out with my problem.

I was wondering if anyone could suggest a substitute for
"Daddy's Little Girl" -- it's usually played at the reception
and the bride dances with her father. I'd like to have a special
song for that special dance, but not "Daddy's Little Girl".

Any suggestions? I'm getting married October 10th of this
year, so you have plenty of time to think...

    thanks a lot in advance!

This is a suggestion from my fiance, Vicki.

Sit down with your father and ask what his favorite song is, or
one that he would like. Compare notes on ideas that you might
have and come up with one that you both agree on. This way,
it will be that much more personal because you've both had
the input into the song that you and your dad will dance to.

Good luck and let us know what you've decided.

    					Regards,

WHEW! - believe it or not, that whole idea really hit home.

I have a 10 year old daughter that I've been singing that song to
every night (or so it seems) for the past 8 years (maybe more) -
she also gets the customary glass of water, of course!

But along the way, I think I've made up a hundred or so different
verses to the song when the real ones got boring, mostly just to
get her to laugh once more and for me to see how clever I can be
on the spot. But I know that when she decides to marry, and if
that song comes along at the reception, both of us will be bawling
    like a couple of babies

I guess you have a point, but *I* want it to be a special song.

maybe I'm wrong, maybe I'm putting to much into it.

Pardon my ignorance -- in my family, we'd be dancing polkas . . . and I
don't think I've ever been to a wedding where this was done . . .

What is the point of this father-daughter dance -- To signify that
you're moving from your father's house to your husband's? To symbolize
your adult status? To show your father you love him? Does the groom
also dance alone with his mother? What song do they traditionally
    dance to?

    Thanks for the explanation.

343.12I don't recall what the band playedCADSYS::RICHARDSONWed Jul 08 1987 18:0513
I danced with my father (world's worst dancer....he couldn't tell
a waltz from a polka), and Paul danced with his grandmother. It
was great - the photographer (a friend of ours) even got a picture
with both couples in it. I think it is just a way of indicating
your love for your dad (and for your grandmother, in Paul's case
    - she's a neat "little old lady", too). Certainly it wasn't my
folks "giving me away" since they had moved 1500 miles away from
my home ten years earlier (and Paul's family all live at least a
couple of hours driving time from here, in various directions).

I don't recall what waltz the band played, though. We hired a
folk-dancing band, so there was very little singing, but music our
    friends could dance to.

    That's not a dumb question...

I think the point of the dance is...I really don't know what
the point of the dance is!! I guess to show the special father-
    daughter relationship.

Yes, the groom usually dances with his mother (at the same time
I think). Popular songs for this dance are "Daddy's Little Girl"
    and "Sunrise, Sunset".

I'm kind of looking for a song that means, yes, I'm all grown up
now and starting a life of my own, but that the father-daughter
    relationship will always be there.

    Am I making *any* sense?

343.14I'll check but I think it's called "Turn Around"YODA::ZECCHINOWed Jul 08 1987 19:038
I think you might like this one song. I'm not very sure of it's
title. Possibly it's called "Turn Around" . The lyrics tell of
a father watching his daughter grow up through the years. It mentions
things like her first date, when she gets proposed to, when she
has children of her own etc. It's a waltz beat so it would be perfect
in as a wedding type dance. I'll check on the name tonight and get
    back to you.

Thanks for the answer about the song and the dance. I wasn't quite
sure how it fit in, but now it makes perfect sense.

A wedding is a sentimental occasion, that's for sure, even if it
doesn't happen to have dancing, and I think it's great to do something
to symbolize that even though you now share your life with someone
else, the people who loved you and raised you are still part of
    your life.

I remember the song from .14. It's a lovely song and sounds like
    it would be perfect.

The best of wishes to you and your spouse-to-be.

343.17Another Variation on the ThemeFDCV03::ROSSWed Jul 15 1987 13:5822
I'm also not sure of the title (possibly could be "Where Are You
Going"), but I do have a few of the words rattling around in
    my brain:

"Where are you going my little one, little one,
Where are you going my baby, my own,
Turn around, turn around, you're three, you're four,
        ..................................................
        ..................................................
Turn around, you're a young wife, with kids of your own".

As I said, I don't have all the words - and the few that I've
remembered may not be exactly right.

I do know, however, that each time I hear that song, whether
on the radio or wherever, more than a few tears come into my
    eyes.

.14-I remember that song and it IS very touching!
(wasn't it also the song for a Kodak commercial?)
Anyway, if I get to vote, I say go with the sug-
    gestion in .14!

My 'special' song for my 7 year old son is "You and

might let me down, Jamey and I ALWAYS have each other!

    RE: 19

I think the KODAK commercial used "Do You Remember the Times
of Your Life", which then became a full-fledged song performed
    by Paul Anka.

If we keep this up, perhaps the whole ceremony and reception
can be done against a backdrop of popular songs and advertising
    jingles.

After the guests have had a bunch of chopped liver and pickled herring,
the old Alka Seltzer ad tune "No Matter What Shape Your Tummy Is
In" might be appropriate. (No, I'm not kidding....that was the name
of the instrumental that accompanied the camera closups of various
tummies. Because of its popularity in the commercial, it was released
    as a "single").

I think we should pass, though, on the lyrics to Carly Simon's first
record, "That's the Way I Always Heard It Should Be". Definitely
would put a damper on the first day of a marriage.

"Turn Around" was one of KODAK's jingles, long before "Times of
your Life"; I liked "Turn Around" much better, as it happens.

The suggestions in .20, while (I hope) facetious, might indeed make
for a humorous touch during the reception - unless enough of your
guests are too young to remember the "stomach" song. My experience
of wedding receptions indicates that it would be a very appropriate
    number.

If you *really* want a "daddy" song, try "Oh My Papa," one of Eddie
Fisher's greatest hits. Might be hard to dance to, but heck, those
bands can play anything in polka time, can't they? (Oops, just
remembered the lyrics; lots of "he *was* so wonderful." Guess this
isn't appropriate when Papa is still with us.)

Was there any music in "Father of the Bride"?

343.23A song to avoid..ELMO::COWERNThomasThu Jul 16 1987 17:3011

One song to most definitely avoid at any wedding reception is
by Willie Nelson, "Of all the grils I've loved before...(who have trav-
eled in and out of my world or door or something..". I don't know what
the correct title is, but it isn't an appropriate song for a wedding re-
ception. I've heard it played more than once.. believe it or not. Who wants
to hear about all the "girls" he's loved before? Certainly not the bride
or her family.. The only woman that matters from now on is the one he just
married!

Tina Turner's "What's Love Got To Do With It?" probably
wouldn't go over to well, either...

I think "Turn Around" would be great but you may have to
follow it with the theme from "Get Out Your Handkerchiefs"...

How come nobody's suggested the music used for the bride/father
dance in "The Godfather"? Lots of family feeling there, and it's
    a lovely melody, too!
