179.0. "New Years Resolutions..." by YODA::BARANSKI (Laugh when you feel like Crying!) Tue Dec 30 1986 17:32

Anyone wish to comment on New Years Resolutions?

:-) I'm still trying to think of a good one... :-) Got any suggestions?

I have very few real vices... I don't smoke, or drink a lot, so those are
out...

To erase from my mind -- completely -- people, situations, and things in
general which I can no longer help. No use mulling over spilt milk!

To be a better friend to the friends I already have, and to make new ones.

To find something good in every single day. ( THIS might be the problem child! )

To try to _understand_ those around me. Because with understanding comes
acceptance, and sometimes a bit more.

I could go ON and on... Makes you wonder -- am I doing anything _right_?! ;-)

Well, it's time for New Year's Resolutions. I am having a bit of
trouble wording mine, except for "living well, living correctly".
Would anyone else care to articulate their resolutions, the motivation
behind them and...why don't we keep them? Many people I have talked
to are puzzled by this phenomenon.

    RE: .1

``Living well, living correctly'' is probably the best resolution
to make, but it may take time to live well and correctly, if you
    succeed at all.

You have to devote some time to thinking about what living well
and living correctly mean. I think if you resolve to just _think_
about living well and living correctly, after a while you'll naturally
start doing so. But don't necessarily rely on others to help in
    your resolve!

I would've loved to quit smoking on Jan. 1, but it didn't work out
that way. I quit October 6, 1987, about 8:30 at night when I ran
    out of butts.

Just to show that New Year's resolutions can happen 365 days a year.

I was looking through my desk and found the following from Parade
                   dated 12/28/86

No one will ever get out of this world alive.
                    Resolve therefore to
maintain a reasonable sense of values.

Take care of yourself. Good health is
everyone's major source of wealth. Without
           it, happiness is almost impossible.

Resolve to be cheerful & helpful. People will
                     repay you in kind.

Avoid angry, abrasive persons. They are
                  generally vengeful.

    	   Avoid zealots. They are generally
                      humorless.

Resolve to listen more & to talk less. No
one ever learns anything by talking.

Be chary of giving advice. Wise men don't
need it & fools won't heed it.

Resolve to be tender with the young,
    	compassionate with the aged, sympathetic
with the striving & tolerant of the
weak & the wrong. Sometime in life you will
                 have been all of these.

Do not equate money with success.
    	There are many successful money-makers
   	     who are miserable failures as
human beings. What counts most about
success is how a person achieves it.

179.42affirm your success with your resolutionsYODA::BARANSKIOh! ... That's not like me at all!Tue Dec 29 1987 14:1112
A technique for helping you keep your New Years Resolution is to write it out in
detail, and imagine yourself doing it in various situations. This helps imprint
idea in your mind that you can keep your resolution, and helps you remember your
resolution when you need it.

Write a one sentence version of your resolution on a card, and put it someplace
that you will see it a few times a day when you have time to think about it, and
imagine yourself keeping your resolution. In the bathroom, or on the mirror
while you are brushing your teeth are good places for me; on the refrigerator is
not a good place for me.
