726.0. "Party, May 5th" by MARCIE::JLAMOTTE (Murphy has been evicted) Fri Mar 31 1989 16:49

There is a promise of Spring in the air. And a Noter from England
is planning to vacation in New England soon. What other reason
do we need to have a party?

    Date: May 5th, Friday Evening
    Time 6:00 until ....
Where Steve Lionel's, 20 Nichol Drive, Nashua

Mark your calendar and then reply to this note (or reply to this
note and mark your calendar). As usual it will be pot luck, so
give us a hint as to what we can look forward to.

Wouldn't miss it! Never know what can result from an HR party ;-)

Since my specialties do not involve cooking, I'll just hope Kimball's

I moved this to a separate note so we don't get too confused.

    Goody goody chocolate mousse!!!

The noter from England will definitely wear a loose fitting dress
so she can have some chocolate mousse!

Look forward to meeting everyone at the party.

I am staying with Charlene for a week and just know I am going to
have a wonderful time and lots of oreo cookes!

Depending on two things, I'll be there: 1) rehearsal schedule
(my "real" career tends to get in the way of partying just like
my DEC work gets in the way of noting) and 2) the presence of
Mr. L's mighty mousse (ah the bitter truth, eh Steve? We only
love you for your confections. . .)

I'll bring a guitar or two and something more or less digestable.

    Steve

Well, there WAS snow - I think... I dunno, it's been so long since
I've seen it in New Hampshire it could have been something else.
But I look today and it's all gone. An optical illusion, perhaps?

Since the mousse is now famous across the country (and internationally,
if one counts Diana), I'll be glad to make a batch or two for the party
on the 5th. It was certainly a hit last night, even if Carla only
had a few spoonfuls (but Liesl made up for her...) (And that's not
counting the six or seven that Sherry's daughter snuck before we
even made it to the party!) There was some serious competition from
Abbott Schindler's brownies, I must admit...

I got pictures of most of the Colorado noting gang last night, and
have promised to send back pictures of the East Coast crowd. So
be your photogenic best on the 5th!

Diana, Can you bring some American jokes with you on your

and it seems to me, that the British Isles are probably
full of American jokes. I've never heard any and would
love to.

I'll bring whatever we seem low on by May 2nd. Meigs

    Re: .16

You don't have to cook - bring soda, or munchies (chips, pretzels,
etc.), or plates, bowls and flatware (forks, spoons, knives), napkins,
    etc.

I have a microwave and a gas grill, in case you want to cook or
    reheat anything.

I'll also have compiled the start of my "Noters' Rogues Gallery"
album, with pictures of many well-known Colorado (and elswhere)
noters. It's my intention to add pictures of East Coast folks,
and share them with the folks out west.

If you haven't been to a H_R party before, you should give it a
try. Amazing and wondrous things have been known to happen at such
events in the past, and you never know just WHO you'll meet there...

If anyone has specific questions about arrangements, please send me
mail. Directions will be sent out to those who have signed up
a few days before the event.

One more thing, prompted by the last party. I own a cat, so if anyone
is allergic to cats, let me know if there's anything I can do to
reduce the problem. Furthermore, smokers are free to light up outside
    the house.

726.21Mousse variationsQUARK::LIONELThe dream is aliveTue Apr 11 1989 16:078
Something I realized from the time that I brought the mousse to the
party in Colorado Springs is that some people cannot eat the standard mousse
because it contains the alchoholic liqueur Grand Marnier. I can also make
some portions with orange extract, which will have minimal alcoholic content.
If you want me to do this, please send me mail so I know how much to make.
I'd like everyone to enjoy the mousse.

To quote Jorgi (or was it Jorta) Festrunk (of SNL fame), "I'm
    really haffing a drag. . .yes, I'm really bummed up!" I won't
be able to make the party the 5th unless "whenever" portion of
the invitation's "6 pm to whenever" is *really* late.

I s'pose I should view this as some sort of cosmic good news/bad
news joke (the good news is that, not unlike Freddy Kruger, our
band riseth yet once again from the ashes; the bad news is that
those pitifully few occasions I laughlingly called a social life
are the first victims of the monster's rebirth). As I was earlier
afeared, rehearsal *is* on Friday nights, so I couldn't be in

As it happens, there will be a THIRD "noter from afar" in the area
at the time. An invitation has been made, and while the noter in
question indicates a desire to attend, schedules may make it
    difficult. But one never knows.

And still another would have made it if not for a prior conflict.

But never fear, I have procured pictures of them both - maybe they'd
better show so I don't have to display the pictures! :-)

One of the women attending has brought to my attention the rather
lopsided female:male ratio of those who have signed up. I replied

I agreed to try to prod more men into signing up. So c'mon guys...

I am quite sure that you have a lot of friends in this area and
probably have already arranged everything for your trip. Nevertheless,
I offer my service, e.g. if you need someone to drive you back and

I have a feeling, Eugene, that you'll simply be able to get
onto 495 north and let the gravitational forces pull you into
party orbit (but I'm sure directions will be in the e-mail
    soon, nonetheless).

Meanwhile, since this is gonna be such a major cosmic deal, I
managed to get dispensation from the folks in my band to cancel
rehearsal on the 5th. Thus I'll be there. And I can bring a
few "noisemakers", but, since I cringe at playing solo, I want
to know if there are any other musicians in the crowd. I can
supply all sorts of nifty instruments and enough amplification
to make electric instruments be heard on a par with, say, a
standard acoustic guitar; could make for an informal jam of
sorts if there are other players in the crowd (available insts.
include guitars, keys, bass, drum machine). Interested folks
should contact me via e-mail by Thursday evening.

Oh, one thing: this will *not* be an exercise in heavy-metal-
sound-wave-mega-destructo thing (maybe we'll do something like
    that down here at Barking Spider Studios later in the summer. . .);
as I mentioned, amplification will be minimal - only that necessary
to give the electric instruments parity with voices and/or acoustic
    instruments.

Eagles, if I were Pat Harmon, I'd be somewhat insulted at your description
of her job (Corporate Meeting Planner) as "someone who sets up parties".
I know Pat well, and there's a LOT more to it than that - it's grueling
work, and she rarely gets a chance to enjoy the functions she plans (which
are usually week-long meetings).

However, Pat did a great job helping me set up the last HR party!

Hmmm....thought this note was to sign up for a party....

Since it's my job that has been mentioned here I thought I ought to put
my .02 cents worth in. There is a group call Corporate Meeting
Planning of which I am part of. There are five of us and a Manager.
We are responsible for planning high level meetings, incentive meetings
(i.e. DEC100, etc) and whatever else is requested of us. We are
responsible for SAVING money, keeping within a budget and making the
planning and progress of the meeting look like a piece of cake. We do
not plan content....just logistics. I travel at least 80% of the time
(no, it's not glamorous) and am never quite sure what time zone I'm in.
Yes, I meet lots of people and go to nice places, but it's still work.
We have been referred to as "party planners" but it is generally of a
sarcastic nature. If you have any questions, I'd be glad to answer
them via MAIL. Now, back to the scheduled programming.....

I'm not sure if I'll make the party......Steve, can you do something

    Eugene,

Go over to mennotes and read the note titled Spring Fever. That
is where the rhubarb discussion started.

Rhubarb is a plant the stems of which make a nice pie or stewed
fruit dish. American settlers called it pie plant. It is quite
tart and needs lots of sugar. It also goes well with strawberries.

    Bonnie

    re .127 .130,
Thanks for the responses. Unfortunately, I still haven't the vaguest
idea as to how it looks like or how it tastes like. I even checked
the dictionary, and that is no help either. I guess I will ask
for it next time I go to the grocery (is it sold there?). Thanks

    Eugene
726.132what did you say to that rhubarb?KOBAL::BROWNupcountry frolicsMon May 01 1989 18:4620

    Eugene,
Rhubarb looks like blushing celery - it has thick C-shaped
stalks that are basically green with a reddish-pink tinge.
The leaves are broad (like giant spinach, perhaps?) and dark
green (the leaves are actually poisonous because of oxalic
acid, so you'll not see them on supermarket rhubarb).

The taste is tart and lemony. It works well in pies, with
strawberries or oranges, and, oddly enough, with some meats.
(In the Middle East, they make a *delicious* khoreshe with
beef, onions, cinnamon, salt + pepper, and rhubarb. It has
to be tasted to be believed.)

    Ron

(I thought I should put in a description since I was one of the
early rhubarb celebrants. In case anyone is looking for rhubarb
roots, they can be had at Blue Seal Feeds on Rte. 101A in Milford,
    NH.)

	3 Mystery Guests!

We could have a contest. The three Mystery Guests will wear name tags
that say only "Mystery Guest". By asking them only yes/no questions you need
to guess who they are. Sort of like "What's My Line"

"MG #1 Do you ever note in Soapbox?"...

Winners get to take home the leftover mousse - uh well, ok, maybe they
get to take home the leftover brownies... Maybe the just get the satisfaction

Well, the mousse is made - some 70 servings or so, I hope that's enough!
I'm sorry that I wasn't able to make the non-alcoholic version this time.
(Each serving has about a teaspoon of Grand Marnier.) I have it on expert

The party highlight (in my opinion anyway) had to be Liesl! I
could write a dissertation on my expectations, and the person I
actually ended up meeting, and you'd still be missing out on so much!
You simply have to meet her for yourself to understand what I mean.
So, Liesl, might we see "She who loiters in hallways" or "More

personal names in the near future?! ;-) ;-) Hmm, I may just make

you, and all the rest of the noters. BTW, sincerest thanks to those of

original list), nearly 100%! (Here's hoping my math is right!) The
house is still standing and my neighbors haven't evicted me - yet.

My thanks to Melinda and Steve M. for bringing the extensive and
elaborate musical gear. It was fun to listen to, and the dancers
    had a good time.

Our most entertaining "mystery guest" billed himself variously
as Fred Flintstone, George Bush, and even had Joyce convinced that
his name really was Eddie Bauer. It took most of the evening for
his true identity to be revealed, as not ONCE did I hear him call
anyone "girl"! Thanks for the fun, Gene Salois!

It was great to see my new friends from Colorado, Liesl, Kathy and
Chuck again, as well as meet Alan Rollow and Diana Hunt. We celebrated
three birthdays, for Diana, Amy Goldman and Rich Whalen! How come I
still have all that ice cream cake left?

As for the food.. well, I didn't come across anything that WASN'T
great. Even the leftovers are tantalizing!

Extra special super-wow thanks to Joyce and "Rockin'" Robin for helping
me with the before and after chores.

726.213Do Your Neighbors Still Talk To You? :-)FDCV01::ROSSSun May 07 1989 14:4927

Steve, thanks for the use of your house for the party. CJ and I
(and I guess just about everybody else) had a great time.

When we got there about 6:20, we never expected that we'd still
*be there* at 1:30 AM ( I bet you never thought that people would
be there 'til then, either :-) ).

Steve, just want you to know that *my* cigarettes are totally bio-
degradable, so all vetiges of my habit should be gone with the rain.
But, I think you ought to severely chastise those others who smoke
those yecchy filter cigarettes; those butts just hang around forever.

Thanks, also, to those folks who suggested that CJ and I take Route
3 all the way to 128, rather than heading south on I495. It made
the ride home seem much shorter (although we still didn't get back
home to Sharon until about 3:00 AM).

    Again, thanks for everything.

      Alan & CJ

P.S., CJ says to say "hi" to your kitty.

P.P.S., Joyce, CJ says that the two of you probably still have much
to discuss about that other individual the two of you seem
            so fond about. :-)
726.214That Great BBQ Chicken Wings....HPSTEK::XIASun May 07 1989 23:5519
Oh yes, one more thing. The food is really good (and that includes
the potato chips I brought in :-) :-)). I must also add that the
BBQ chicken wing is SUPERB. I would say that it beats the famous
Buffalo chicken win. Robin told me that it was prepared by Tamzen.
Hmmm. I think chances are we talked to each other during the party,
but I am not good at remember people's names (sorry about that...
blushing). Someone give me a hint? Oh, I was the only Asian guy in
    the party (I think)....

By the way, could you send me the recipe for that BBQ chicken wing
(being the kind of "lazy" guy I am, I don't think I will ever make
them myself, but I am a theoretical mathematician, so understanding
the theoretical aspect of the great BBQ chicken wing gives me
satisfactions :-)). Oh, am I invited to your next party :-)?

    Thanks in advance.

    Eugene

Well, I had a fantastic time!! It was so nice to see some old friends
and put some new faces to names. Especially Alan Rollow whom I
succeded to embarrass myself in front of. To explain, I was looking
through the list of attendees and this man was standing next to me. I
said, "Oh! Alan Rollow is supposed to be here!!" And the man next to
me looked at me and said, "Yes, I'm here. Now who are you?"

Pat, we've got to get together. We seem to have SO much in common.
Joyce, you're absolutely wonderful. Bill B., what can I say? You're
one of the best friends a girl can have. Thank you for giving me a
ride to the party. And Meigs, thank you for giving me a ride home. We
certainly had some interesting conversations on the way back.

Thank you very much Steve for opening up your house to us. We all had
a wonderful time. I DEFINITELY want that recipe for that mousse. As
you could probably tell, I loved it!!

Hello everybody ! Thanks Steve, for a great party.

    Liesl:

Keep up the swing dancing. You seemed to be catching on
    	amazingly fast.

    Eileen:

Keep up ALL the dancing. You're a great follower.

In general, I was really pleasantly surprised at how friendly everyone
    was at the party.

Often at parties, I feel a bit uncomfortable about what to say or who
to talk to. But at this party, perhaps because of the theme of
human relationships notes file, it was easy to talk to everyone.

And conversations were much less surfacy too. For example, Eileen and
I had a great time talking, then as she was leaving, we both suddenly
realized that neither of us had ever said "what do you do ... where
    do you work?" Amazing.

A *superb* party, to be sure...

Even though I missed the middle of the party, (The Bob's were also superb!) and
missed a couple of people (like Chelsea, who I walked past when I got back
without knowing it!), it was an exceptional party.

Like the concert, I don't think that anyone there wasn't wild about every song!
Maybe it's contagious... I too noticed a lack of superficial conversation,
except that I caught Alfred Thompson talking shop.
