814.0. "Fall Party for HUMAN_RELATIONS!" by PENUTS::JLAMOTTE (J & J's Memere) Thu Aug 10 1989 20:17

    PARTY ALERT.....PARTY ALERT.....PARTY ALERT......

I have this premonition that one of our moderators will volunteer his
house for a party on September 29th.

I also have a premonition that there may be one or two mystery guests.

Watch this note for further premonitions.

start signing up for the party anytime.

Lessee... Joyce said "his", so that rules out Joyce and Tamzen. I
guess that leaves Jim, Joe and... naw... couldn't be! Me?

Ok, I'll do it one more time. But the next one's at Joyce's! (You'll
have to knock out a few walls, Joyce! And get the rice off the bed!)

The date and time, Friday, September 28, 1989, 6PM until midnight
    (or whenever).

The place, mine (sigh) in Nashua. (Just when I got my neighbors to
    start speaking to me again!)

Sign up here or send me mail. (If you want to be a "mystery guest",
just let me know and I won't put your name on the list I post here.)
Tell us what you'll be bringing for food, drink or other useful
    stuff.

A couple of things that many people will want to know:

    	1. Smokers are welcome to enjoy their cigarettes outside (but no
butts on the lawn this time, please!)

    	2. I do share my house with a cat, Moet. He will very likely
stay outside the whole evening, but if you are severely
allergic to cats, you might be uncomfortable in some rooms.
Others should be ok. Let me know if I can do anything to
    	    help.

    	3. I promise to make some sinful concoction containing chocolate
and Grand Marnier. It might not be mousse.

    	4. At H_R parties, there tends to be an absence of loud music and
heavy drinking. People have a great time meeting old and new
friends, and each time, half of the attendees are
"first-timers". So if you're holding off because you don't
know anyone, or are a "read-only" noter, go ahead and sign up!
    	    I promise you'll have a great time.

As for the previous parties, directions will be sent to those who signed
up a few days before the event. The reason for asking people to sign up
is so that I get a rough idea of how many people will be attending, and thus
can get the necessary supplies.

See note 726 for the history of the previous party.

The weekend of September 29th will be gorgeous in New England...and the
    airlines are offering great bargains.

See the foliage, and attend a great H_R party at the same time. If
anyone is willing to offer a space for a noter from afar to sleep let
me know...or if you would like to come out here and need a place to
sleep the same. I will see if I can do some matching.

Thanks Steve. I'll be at your party. I had a great time at the
    last one.

And I hope that lady that told me not to send her any more mail
messages will come even though she now knows I'll be there.
I wish we could at least make up and be on "friendly terms", as I
have good feelings about you, despite our criticism of each other.

Picture Steve's face deep red - the party is scheduled for Friday,
September 29 - not the 28th (which is a Thursday).

I also want to apologize to those who will not be able to come because
it is Rosh Hashanah - the party date was chosen to coincide with the
plans of a "distant" noter who will be around that weekend. I will
try hard not to let this kind of a conflict happen again.

814.43Air fare is un-fairBRADOR::HATASHITATue Aug 29 1989 21:098
Your best bet is to cross over to Seatle and take a US domestic
flight to Logan. This way you can avoid paying the extortion that
the Canadian airlines call air fare. If you book far enough in
advance you can save upwards of 75% off of Air Canada's price.

Well, perhaps looking at the comments about the past party (note 726)
might give you some incentive.

As for Nashua vs. Vancouver - I hardly think one needs to treat it as
a competition. New Hampshire certainly has a lot to offer, especially
at that time of year when the foliage colors will be at or near their peak.
I really doubt anyone is coming to see the city of Nashua itself. (Nashua
is a perfectly nice place, there's nothing to be ashamed of.)

If you do come, Barb, there will be many new friends who will be happy to
meet you.

The *state* of N.H. does have some scenic spots to offer such as
the coastline and the White Mountains, but Nashua while not being
a horrible place is just an ordinary town compared to Vancouver.
And, I meant nothing against the parties at Steve's :-). They're
certainly worth going to. I only made my comments because I *am*
a fan of Vancouver. I have relatives there and I love it. Anyone
who's ever been there knows it's location is incredible right between
the mountains and the sea. And, Doctah, one of my uncle's has a
fishing business out of Vancouver. He makes a comfortable living
fishing for delicious sockeye salmon in his own boat. They love it.

    Hi Steve,

If the invitation is still open, I would like to tentatively plan
on coming to your party. It sounds like alot of fun and it will
give me the chance to meet the "people behind the notes". Since
alot of people will be bringing desert-type food, I would like to
bring my famous nacho dip & nachos (of course).

    Looking forward to the PARTY!!

Debby, you're certainly welcome. Though the list is filling up, it's
still open. I would encourage others who think they might come to sign
up now - there's no obligation involved. I just want a feel for the
maximum number of people who will be attending so I can get appropriate
supplies. Also, as my house is of fixed and not enormous proportions, I
may have to place limits on attendance if a lot more people sign up.

The last party had 60 signed up, and there was a maximum of about 40 at
any given time. This was comfortable, and I think I could accomodate
a few more than that, especially if the weather cooperates.

I'm looking forward to meeting you all - especially the new faces!

;-). Liesl and I were enjoying a blues band, dancing a slow dance, and
two young women who'd been dancing with each other all evening were
sitting this one out, standing at the edge of the dance floor...one
plaintively wailed to the other, "I *neeed* a man!"...just as she
finished saying so, our eyes happened to meet, and she blushed
ferociously when she realized I'd overheard her...

As far as my foot...well, not only did Liesl take me on the Lionel
Memorial Altitude Romp For Killing Lowlanders, through the Garden of
the Gods and up to Helen Hunt Falls, but we also went out to visit
Miss Taffy, Liesl's longtime equine companion. A friendly Appaloosa
named Penny needed some exercise, and she and I eventually discovered
ourselves accoutered and encumbered with one another, much to Miss T's
and Liesl's amusement. All in all, we got on tolerably well, until
I carelessly walked under her while leading her through a gate.
Fortunately, we'd had our exercise by then...

Leading a friendly 1000-lb mare back off of one's foot while choking
off screams is not recommended for the faint of heart. My sneaker
didn't afford much protection. I'm fairly certain the toe and both
nails will rejuvenate before too much of the ski season has passed...

But wait, there's more! Since you're at an elevation of some 6700 feet,
you're whirling around the earth faster than we are. Thus Einstein's
theory of relativity says that time is moving slower for you than it is
for us lowlanders, and therefore it's really only 6.9999999999 days!

But... there's also the time zone difference. Since it's already two hours

Nametags - well, I'd like there to be. It may have to be the "write your own"
kind. I'll send a note off to Maggie Tarbet asking if her program that
she uses for the WOMANNOTES parties is something I can adapt for HR. I guess
I'll need a whole box of them just for Kris, though.... If you have a special
preference as to name shown on the tag - assuming I have them generated -
send me mail. Otherwise I'll use the first names I have in the list.

Order - next time I'll do it in reverse order, Mike.

Teddy Grahams - Gail, if you run out, I have several boxes. (Also have some
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" cereal...Oh the wonders of having a 5-year-old!)

Distance travelled - somehow I think this is a dubious honor!

you check your whip thru....Give 'em a good laugh in the baggage area! :-)
Even metal knitting needles are considered to be weapons...and no scissors
allowed, but I've gotten my small snippers on a plane before.

Liesl....<insert stern voice> those boots are MANDATORY! :-)

RE: .185 Well, uhm....uh.....well...... :-) Actually, the real story is
that I got caught in a long security line at the Denver airport last time
I was going to Boston, and the guy in front of me was the long-haired
leather sort of lovely.....and we got to talking...when he got to security...
they searched his briefcase and took out his handcuffs and sent them
back to baggage...he wasn't too pleased.......considering I sat next to
him on the flight, I guess you could say I wasn "none too pleased" either! :-)

Well, what an amazing party it was. They just keep getting bigger and
better! We had 63 people in attendance, by my count. Though the
"Mystery Guests" I had on my list were unable to attend, we had
another surprise Mystery Guest who was a surprise even to me.
The shrieks of astonishment that greeted Kathy Gallup when she walked
in the door were raucous - especially from Liesl! Apparently Kathy was
the "accomplice" who was helping Steve Mallett whip up his mystery
concoction, which was NOT green and fuzzy!

Fun as it was, I'm afraid that the H_R parties may have outgrown my
house, so volunteers for larger accomodations would be welcomed.

Thanks to Joyce, Kris and "Liosliath" (Leslie) for helping with the

You'll just have to get a bigger house, Steve! 8-) Heck, you
could even have a H_R house hunting party (I'd love to see the

Well, after having my arm twisted over the weekend, - I've agreed to
rent out the clubhouse here at the apartment complex, and have the
winter party. If I can rent it on the 27th of January, it will be
then. Some of us talked about having it in December, but I think with
all the office Christmas parties, waiting until January might be the
    safest thing.

As soon as I talk to the manager at the clubhouse, I'll confirm the
date... I figure 3 months notice should be enough time for Carla to
save up for a plane ticket :-).. Liesl and Kathy... you *will* coome

    Some personal observations...

I was delighted to get the chance to see "Krash" Kress again - and to
see the MUCH trimmer Andy Leslie. Way to go, Andy! Beverly Block's
tie-dye dress was an eye-catcher, but Beverly, how DO you know quite
    so much about handcuffs?

The hallway gauntlet seemed to attract a number of folks who would
pass back and forth, even if they didn't have to. And Mike Z showed
everyone why New Englanders put light switches outside bathroom
doors. And we reserved Chelsea's step of honor for her.

Nils Granquist's dip was extremely addicting - I didn't quite catch
what was in it, but I'd sure love the recipe. Gail's Teddy Grahams
were all gone by the end of the evening, despite the LARGE bowl
of them she put out in the living room. I donated the two boxes
I had which Tommy seems to not want anymore. (Now if only I could
have persuaded people to finish the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle
    cereal...)

A lot of excitement, great fun and good friends. Thank you all
for making it a delightful evening.

    YEEHAW!!!

I'll offer my (tiny) 5 room house to put people up. Let's see...if
I can farm my daughter out to her grandmother I'll have room for
2 couples and 3 sleeping bags on the floor. Showers could be a
problem as I have a very small water heater. However, we can work
it out one way or another.

Well, shucks, Miss T and I just flushed out a fox Saturday. He got
away and mom and me went hungry.

I live right next to Garden of the Gods, I can take everybody on a

liesl, does that mean you don't have traffic jams? I think I would
forego showers if I thought I could get where I was going in a
reasonable time for the distance traveled.

And is the Garden of the Gods anything like the Garden of Eden? That

L.A. traffic at 3 a.m. is indeed comparable to rush hour here.

Joyce,

The Garden of the Gods are some breathtaking red/crimson/... rock formations.
think of the Grand Canyon on a :-) somewhat :-) smaller scale... well, in any
case, it is pretty.

Traffic is pitifull, rent/real estate is 1/3 of Boston, plenty of space outside
the city if you want it... My favorite place to get 39 cent hamburgers :-)

What more could you ask for? ... :-)

I found the best place for a party ... I am not making any premonitions
because I may loose a couple of friends ... but I am going to pray real
hard that things will work out.

    I can't wait!
814.327It's a bit early yet to be marking your calendar, but...QUARK::LIONELFree advice is worth every centTue Dec 26 1989 17:0120
Allow me to explain Joyce's "non-premonitions" in the previous reply... Earlier
you saw me comment that the HR parties had outgrown my current house. Well,
there's only one thing to do about that, and that's to get a bigger house!

And so I did, or rather, "we" did, the "we" being me and Leslie Richardson,
whom many of you met at the fall party (at which time she was generally known
as Leslie Martin and was sporting a nametag which said "Liosliath"). Joyce
visited our new home last week and marvelled at how RIGHT it was for a party.
Well, at least it's better than my current digs...

However, Leslie and I made it QUITE clear to Joyce that she was NOT under
any circumstances to announce a party there, and that it would be next fall
before we're ready. For now, we're doing the typical new house routine
of rend-tear-death-and-destruction. But our new home in north Nashua has
a much larger living room with a fireplace and a large "rumpus room" downstairs,
which means lots of fun. And there's even a hallway for the "gauntlet"!

We're looking forward to seeing everyone in the fall. Until then, stay tuned!
