663.0. "freedom....free enterprise..." by SALEM::SAWYER (Alien. On MY planet we reason!) Mon Jan 23 1989 18:48

    freedom....
    free enterprise....

both terms have the word "free" in them....

    however....in america...there are limits to...freedom...
    many limits...

which makes it far less than freedom in my opinion...

perhaps we should erase that word and put in...constraints...
    instead.

    however...free enterprise is aptly named....
there are so very few constraints against free enterprise...

isn't it odd that we so easily limit our "freedom" through laws,
    regulations and rules...
but the thought of limiting our "free enterprise" scares so many
    of us....

663.1bye bye, Bundy.....SSDEVO::GALLUPMastering the Moguls!Mon Jan 23 1989 20:3421

	 freedom......

everyone in this country is "free" to do what they wish...

in otherwords...you are free to do what you wish...BUT, by,
lets say, Murdering someone, you are denying that person the
	 "freedom to live."

...hence, most laws are based on the fact that you can have
your freedom, but you can't strip someone else of theirs...

I know *I* sure don't want to take someone else's freedom away
	 from them...

	 kath

PS: Speaking of murder, Bundy is slated to be executed
	 tomorrow...

sure, I have the freedom to not have to wash you blood off my
car after it spattered there when you were thrown 100 ft out
	 of your windshield... 8^)

663.5We are freeAKOV13::FULTZED FULTZTue Jan 24 1989 12:3917
There are plenty of constraints on free enterprise. After all,
we have anti-trust laws, regulated industries, etc. There are also
constraints on freedom. In most cases, the constraints on both
are put there to protect other freedoms. Without antitrust laws,
we could possibly lose the freedom to comparison shop.

There are, of course, exceptions. The seat belt laws are a definite
infringement on my freedom. The legislature has shown many cases
where they have taken a total disregard for our wishes and put
constraints upon us which have been unnecessary.

Basically, though, I would say that compared to ALL other countries
we have the most open and free society in the world. I would not
give up my right to live here for all the tea in China.

>> re: .1 ... Bundy deserved to die !!! (one bird-brained opinion)
>> Let's not restrict freedoms ... If anyone (Bundy?) demonstrates
>> they cannot be allowed to be free ... just execute or exile them.

ditto....if someone denies another person their freedom, the
same thing should be done to him/her....

Quote seen at a McD's in Miami....

"If Bundy fries, the fries are free..."

Do not abuse the freedom you have....

663.11Seat belts...KALKIN::BUTENHOFBetter Living Through Concurrency!Thu Jan 26 1989 13:4516
At the risk of directing this discussion down a futile rathole...

Seatbelt laws are no more an "infringement of personal freedom" than are laws
against murder... and for much the same reason. Seatbelts don't just minimize
the damage to YOU when you crash... they also reduce the chances that you will
crash to begin with: thereby saving OTHER lives. Specifically, seatbelts help
to keep you in your seat and in control during emergency maneuvers. Racing
style 4-point seatbelts would be a lot more effective than the standard 3-point
system in most cars; but 3-point or even 2-point is a lot better than nothing.

Motorcycle helmet laws are a much better example if you want to talk about
personal freedom. I can't think of any reason helmets would reduce the risk of
injury to OTHERS... aside from the off-chance of the motorcyclist getting bopped
by a rock or something and losing control...

WADR, if you've 'lost' the typical American car, seat belts
aren't going to make the difference. And they will interfere
    with kissing your a** goodbye.

    Freedom ?

Is the program 20/20 believable ? Is the State of California dept of
    health believable ?

Currently, $ 80 MILLION dollars of TAXPAYER dollars are being spent
(given, gratis, free) to people who chose NOT to provide adequate
health/accident insurance for themselves, but did have accidents, and
    did NOT wear Helmets.

Seeing some of these 'living vegetables' makes me wonder about 'Freedom
of Choice'. If people are free choose 'risky sports', then why are we
required to subsidize their choice ?

    re: .0 Freedom.

People everywhere are 'Free' to do what they like. That's why the
prisons are overcrowded; welfare is out ragiously high; and teen age
    pregnancies are increasing.

Free. The 'pre Civilized' days were a good exmample of freedom. People
could do whatver they want, whenever they wanted. The problem, of
course, is that "I" say that your Freedom to swing your hands ENDS
    where begins my nose.

Of course we're free. Just ask our politicians.

There's an unpopular joke the Russians tell tourists, when they
ask AMericans why the US is better. The punch lline goes like
this: "... the difference between Russians and Americans is that
we [sic: Russians] know that we are not free ...".
