653.0. "FOOD FOR THOUGHT" by AWARD1::HARMON () Thu Jan 12 1989 12:49

The following came across my desk a few days ago. It's worth thinking
    about.

    		Autobiography in Five Short Chapters
    		          by Portia Nelson

    			     Chapter I

    			I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
    			      I fall in.
    			I am lost...I am helpless.
    			   It isn't my fault!
It takes forever to find a way out.

    			     Chapter II

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
    			  I pretend I don't see it.
    			    I fall in again.
I can't believe I'm in the same place.
    			But it isn't my fault!
It still takes a long time to get out.

    			    Chapter III

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
    			   I see it is there.
    			I still fall in...it's a habit.
    			   My eyes are open.
    			   I know where I am.
    			    It is my fault!
    			  I get out immediately.

    			    Chapter IV

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
    			I walk around it....

    			   Chapter V

I walk down a different street.

Some unusual things must go over your desk!

I thought this "autobiography" was a bit on the pessimistic side...
individual "falls" many times into "deep holes". I think most
of us only fall into deep holes once, MAYBE twice, in our lives.

The rest of the falls are merely caused by tripping on cords stretched
across the street. We just brush ourselves off and keep walking...no
huge pit to climb out of (although often appears that way at the
    time).

We often have someone (or some people) who throw ropes down the
hole to help us out.....that's what we have each other for.

Walking down a different street - could be w/o holes or could be
    a deadend.....

... to add to the "food for thought"....
