1015.0. "Fall H_R Party - Saturday, September 22 - Nashua" by QUARK::LIONEL (Free advice is worth every cent) Mon May 28 1990 03:14

... this is also for Joyce...

Now that the First Annual (?) Colorado H_R Party is history, I figured
I'd like to, for once, announce my own party. So here it is.

You may recall that after the last party I held, that I said that the
H_R parties had outgrown my house. So I did what had to be done, and
bought a bigger house! So that's where the next H_R party will be...

I haven't set an exact date for it yet, but it will probably be in
late September, as I know a couple of out-of-towners will be around
then. Let me know if there are particular dates that are bad or
good. I'll announce the date when it is set.

So plan on late September, at the home of Steve Lionel and Leslie
Richardson, in Nashua, NH, for the next installment in the never-
ending (?) saga of H_R parties.

And yes, Amy, we have a great hallway for you.

The date has now been set for the Fall 1990 Human_Relations Noters Party.
The day to reserve is Saturday, September 22. Doors open at 4PM.

For you out-of-towners, this is likely to be near the peak foliage season
for New Hampshire, so consider planning some time to go leaf-peeping.

If you would like to attend, please reply here. Directions will be sent to
those who sign up sometime in the week prior to the party. Any questions,
just ask.

For those who have not attended previous H_R parties, you'll find them full
of warm and friendly people, lots of good conversation and laughs, and a
minimum of loud music. It's a great place to come out and meet in person
those funny people with two colons in their names.

I look forward to seeing you all in the fall!

yes, and one of the best parts is that no one ever looks
like you think they are going to look. A noters party is
always a "come uppance" for one's intuition.

A pleasant surprise, too, is that people that get my dander
up in noteland are really likeable in person.

so sign me up. Steve has the chocolate ms market covered ... so
why don't I bring ... um ... baby deli sandwiches.

to the list, let me know either here or in mail. If you don't want your name
to be shown in the notesfile, just let me know that too, and you'll be a

I will have nametags printed again, so if you want some particular spelling
on your tag, be sure and tell me.

One thing we DON'T need this time is paper plates/cups/flatware!

People are asked to bring some beverage along with (or sometimes
instead of) the food or other item they bring. I would suggest
    bringing 6-10 servings of beverage.

I don't think we'll need plates, flatware or napkins, but we will
    probably need cups.

Don't worry if you can't make something to bring - fresh fruit,
nuts and other hand-munchies are always welcome.

It's now a bit over four weeks to go to the party. From experience, I know
that a lot of people wait until the last minute to sign up, but I'd like
to ask that if you'd like to come, but still aren't sure of your schedule,
sign up anyway. There's no obligation, and it gives me a better idea of
how many people to prepare for. I will ask that everyone sign up no later
than Monday, September 17.

Also, if you think you know what you would like to bring to the party, send
me mail or enter a note here.

I figure on a start time of around 5PM. Ending time is open, but most
people start fading around midnight. If you can't come until later in the
evening, that's fine too - we'll still be going strong.

As I said earlier, I'll send out detailed directions the week of the party,
probably on Tuesday. If you need yours earlier, let me know.

Three weeks to go... I'd appreciate it if people who have signed up
would let me know what they think they'll be bringing to the party.
Typically, folks bring some sort of food that serves a dozen or so
(small servings), and their favorite beverage.

And if you haven't signed up yet, now's the time!

If you have any special requirements (allergies, etc.) that I should
be made aware of, please send me mail. We do have a cat, though there
are large parts of the house where he doesn't go, so folks with cat
allergies should be able to enjoy themselves. Smoking will be allowed
only on the screen porch or outside.

A reminder - please sign up by the end of Monday, Sept 17.

As an added attraction, there will be two "souvenirs" of the spring party
in Colorado. There is still quite a bit of Doug Olson's Ghiardelli
chocolate left, that I've been saving in the freezer for this party. Also,
I have a videotape of some of the folks who attended the spring party,
that I will make available for viewing (in edited form).

For Kath, I'm going to try to make a batch of white chocolate mousse, and
will also make this the non-alcoholic version. We'll see how it comes out.

    That sound delicious!

    IDEA....
After the party, when everyone else is congratulating all-comers on
the great food that they brought, why don't we start a "Noters Recipe
    Book"?

We could share it with other conferences when they post a party, and
they could add recipes and share it back.....
It would maybe provide inspiration for those not sure what to bring,
and provide great fun for those of us who love trying new recipes but
aren't sure whether they'd "travel" or not!

    Just a thought....
'gail (who is determined to contribute *something* even if she can't
    be there ;-)

in one of the versions of womannotes we had a whole topic for recipes
(particularly the various chocolate mousses and creme-de-menthe

I've sent out the party directions, and according to NMAIL, all but two

It's not too late to sign up, though.

We could use people bringing ice (if coming early in the evening), cups and
spoons.

				Steve
1015.82Photos/videosQUARK::LIONELFree advice is worth every centTue Sep 18 1990 19:1918
For the benefit of noters near and far who cannot attend the party, I will
be taking photos during the evening. If you do not wish your photo taken,
please let me know either by mail or in person that evening. Also, as was
done at the party in Colorado, I'll set up a time where I'll go around the
room with a video camera, allowing people to introduce themselves and
say a few words. I'll edit this and append it to the movies that Carol
DuBois took at the spring party, and make copies availables to noters near
and far. This will probably be something that I do at a specific time
during the evening and in one room, so if you are camera shy, you can easily
avoid it.

I can tell you that especially for noters far away, pictures like this are
often the only way they can "participate" in the get-togethers. The
FRIENDS conference has an album that sometimes circulates, but it is often
hard to get ahold of, so I thought we might start one, both with still
photos and video, for H_R.

Hi! I live in Shrewsbury, MA (very close to where route 9 and route
140 meet), and I don't like driving long distance (I get very sleepy
and at the same time very tense after a while, a weird combination
indeed); so I would like to get a ride if possible. So far I
have found a ride TO the party, but need a ride back. If you live
around the Shrewsbury area, I would appreciate if you can offer me a
    ride back.

    Thanks in advance.

Thank you all for attending - this was perhaps the most successful
of the four parties I've hosted so far. There was plenty of room
for people, plenty of food and drink and fun. And the weather even
cooperated, mostly, by staying cool (though it did shower a bit).

I never got the chance to either show the Colorado video or make
a new one, but I did take a few photos (and mystery guest Nanci
VanFleet took many more.) The Friends family album was left here
and I will insert as many photos as I can.

Many people were rather astonished to meet a tall, husky black
gentleman who introduced himself as "Bonnie Reinke", and who wore
Bonnie's nametag most of the evening. This was Greg Bruno's way
of returning the favor when at the party last year, Bonnie wore
Greg's badge since Greg couldn't make it.

We missed not seeing some of the folks who we thought were going
to be there. Sunny Bader missed us due to not feeling well,
according to Kristy. Skip Hogge is probably still lost in the
wilds of Merrimack. We never heard from Bob Holt or Steve Mallett,
two of our mystery guests, and there was great disappointment from
many at not being able to meet E. Grace Noonan; there was talk of
people going to see the play she's in just to see her. We also
missed Gail Koski - Gail, you were the first to sign up, where were
    you?

All in all we had about 50 people show up. I didn't get the name of
all of the "write-ins", but none of them put their name on the
sign-in list and my memory for names isn't that good.

Leslie and I were delighted that people had a good time, and it was
great to meet so many old friends and make new ones.

If you left something here that you want back, please send me mail.
I know we have a pie tin and what appears to be a much-treasured
Jordan Marsh Christmas box. Also, please put recipes for food you
brought in the recipes note (note 7). Josh Belkin, this means YOU!

Below is the list of people I know were here. Please help me fill in
names of those not on the list.

Me Too.
Thanks to Steve and Leslie for hosting [to say nothing of
thanking Steve for being Father Human :) ] I like this place!

And hope you enjoy your new home. It's beautiful!

We must start a note sometime, discussing why such good
looking people note here.

The party really was a good time... Thanks to you both, Steve and
    Leslie.

Er, I suspect the Christmas box might be mine... I brought the
bars I made in an empty Christmas box as I figured I wouldn't have
to worry about bringing a plate home...

Thanks to Steve and Leslie for being such wonderful hosts.

I had a wonderful time putting faces to nodenames, as it were! :-)
And it was nice to meet Greg, although it seems sort of silly for
both of us to have to fly to New England to do it!

Dan - thanks for the ride back. Mike - thanks for the pictures of
Emily. Doug - thanks for the wonderful theatre conversations. Bonnie
    - it was a special treat to meet you. Say hi to Don for me. Kristy -
thanks for woobie-ing. :-) Meigs - thanks for including me in my
pictures. (By the way, negatives will be sold on a case by case basis.
Price will be highly negotiable depending on the content of the
    picture!) ;-)

Looks like I'll be here for the duration (of the fall at least). We'll
have to do a dinner or something. Will you take charge of that? I'm
usually available almost every week night except Thursdays.

Well, I hate to say this but I didn't make it...:-(((((((!!!!!!!
(obviously Skip...) Seems fate conspired against me and prevented
me from getting to the site of the affair. Several things went
wrong and individually I might have handled it with only being a
little late... combined it became impossible and at 11:00 p.m. I
gave up on getting there. A combination of uncooperative automobiles,
a familey crises invovling my son, a trip to Maine that took longer
then planned were only part of the problems I had to face that day.

I'm really very sorry I was unable to make it and hope you can forgive
me for not being able to give any notice on my inability to attend.

On a positive note. My interviews in Merrimack last Monday bore
fruit and I've received and accepted a job offer. I hope to be
moved out to that area in time for Halloween. I will be working
in the S/R Dock at MKO for a bit then moved to one of the local
remote sites supported by that facility. It means a promotion
and I'm really psyched about it BUT... in making the preparations
for the trip it leaves me with little time for noting.

Anyhow... It looks like I missed one heck of a GREAT party. I still
want to offer my thanks to everyone involved for it and I PROMISE
I will make it to the next one in New England. That is if I can
read a map and follow the directions to drive from Santa Clara,
CA to Merrimack, NH... hmmmm looks like a L-O-N-G drive!

Also, belated thanks. (Now that rundown no longer crashes, I have
more time to note...)

Great to meet Nanci -- I'm jealous of her theater experience.

Liesl -- I brought the handcuffs in case you were one of the
mystery guests. Kathy & Amy had fun playing with them anyway...

Thanks Steve & Leslie. Nice house. Who knows, Maybe I'll
host one...

I got back the pictures that I took from the party, and put some of them,
along with some from the May party in Colorado, in the Friends photo album.

Also, someone left a metal pie plate that had contained a sort of cheescake
pie at the house. Would the owner please send me mail so I can return it?
(The plate, not the pie, which is now gone!)

    Steve,

Sorry this is a tad bit late, but thanks for opening your home...
Jim and I had a great time, and it was so neat to see people again that
    I haven't seen for a while...
