144.0. "Unwritten rule in Baseball" by KRYPTN::JASNIEWSKI () Mon Nov 10 1986 11:21

    	There is an unwritten "rule" in the game of baseball, applicable
    at times when you see the team manager in a heated argument with
    the ump, that -

    	"you can basicly say anything you want, as long as you dont
    look at the other person (ump) in the eyes"

    	If followed, he wont toss you "outta da game".

    	I'm curious how that idea effects the entrys here, (I have yet
    to "look anyone in the eyes" when "replying") vs what is said in
    our "out of real time" medium AND vs the number of deleted (ARRGH)
    base notes I often see...

    	Taken one step further (and I'm sure the VAX system security
    programmers would love to accept this one) - what would people say
    if the "traceback" possibility were at the replyees option. Your
    first name - but no address!

    	I'd be willing to bet in SOME cases peoples attitudes and whole
    personalities are much different in this 'scope (no pun intended)
    than for a face to face encounter -

    Joe,

    I think you're right, I bet some people would act very differently
    when confronted face to face.

    Toodles,

144.2...With noters etiquette respectedKRYPTN::JASNIEWSKIMon Nov 10 1986 11:247

    	PS: I realise that the "noters etiquette" rules exist governing
    "what can be legitimately spoken of" - lets discuss my base note
    with those rules respected.

144.3H_R thru technological changes in communicationATFAB::REDDENThe vision is becoming clearerMon Nov 10 1986 15:3617
    As we develop new communications technologies, we are going to have
    to learn new interpersonal communications skills. A characteristic
    of the new technologies is they tend to use a very limited numbers
    of senses to communicate, in contrast to face to face communications,
    which uses <integer of your choice> senses. To some degree, something
    has developed around the telephone, with books and training on
    effective use of this medium. Perhaps we should expect to soon see
    training offered in "Effective Noting" or "Management of remote
    professionals thru noting".

    Responding more directly to the base note, how would the question
    change if VAXnotes were implemented using full-motion video rather
    than text? Then I could look the camera in the lens when I was
    talking and your might feel that I was lookin' you in the eye?
    OK - how 'bout if it was implemented with holographic images, and I
    was sitting next to you right now saying this. Would looking into
    the eye of a holographic image ring your chimes?
144.4Never anonymous...BOVES::WALLI see the middle kingdom...Mon Nov 10 1986 15:388

    	I find that in many cases the middleman of NOTES gives me time
    to organize my thoughts and be more accurate and open about a topic.
    I am blessed/curese with an inordinately extensive vocablulary,
    and am wont to allow my words to get in the way of my meaning.

    Like just then. :-)
