1014.0. "To Loved ones that didn't return" by MILKWY::BUSHEE (From the depths of shattered dreams!) Thu May 24 1990 13:39

    	Well, Monday is Memorial day once again. As in past years
    	it is a difficult time for me. I am not a religious man,
    	yet I hold deep within a sense of great loss for the ones
    	I left behind during the VN war. Some were lost in battle,
    	a couple died inroute home when their plane crashed. Still,
    	after all these years, the hurt comes up just as strong on
    	this day each year as it did back then. I know this is one
    	I'll forever live with.

    	Please, everyone, let's all take a moment out from whatever
    	we're doing this weekend to remember those who didn't make
    	it back! They gave their all so we could enjoy so much!

    	You'll always be remembered in my heart.

1014.1CSC32::K_JACKSONHere we go againThu May 24 1990 14:1919
    Thank you for adding this note.

    Back in 71, a friend and I had just finished boot camp and AIT. I
    volunteered for Nam only to be told that I was crazy. Needless to say
    they didn't send me.

    Unfortunately, they sent my friend over there instead, who didn't
    want to go. He never made it back alive. I was very bitter for quite
    some time. I still remember him quite often. God rest his soul and all
    souls that we lost in the wars. They all suffered in hell during
    war, but now they are all at peace.

    Kenn

    P.S., God help anyone who burns the American flag in front of me
           because his a$$ will then belong to me...
1014.2Thanks!PENUTS::JLAMOTTEJ & J's MemereThu May 24 1990 15:169
    To Bob, who didn't return. I remember the birth of your son, and the
    honey we extracted from the side of the garage at your house...and
    the Thanksgiving we shared at Roswell Air Force Base. Thanks for what
    you did for us.

    To George Bushee and others,

    Thanks for your sacrifice as well. You came back and you suffered. It
    is your Memorial Day as well!
1014.3The Pain Never Abates ...GRANPA::TTAYLORI do not want what I haven't gotThu May 24 1990 17:359
    To Rick, the proudest and bravest Marine ...

    I wish you were still here to realize all *our* dreams. You were (and
    still are) the love of my life ... I'll never forget you. No matter
    who is in my life, there's a part of my heart reserved especially for
    you.

    Tammi (still grieving one year later)

1014.4Even today....HPSTEK::BOURGAULTThu May 24 1990 19:3818

    This note made me feel very good. Being the daughter of a 20 year
    veteran of the USMC and of WWI, Korea and Nam, I often feel that people
    today no longer appreciate the sacrifices made by the men of our armed
    forces.

    Not only in war, but in peace too. Right now my sons father is serving
    in the USNavy. He is stationed in Hawaii and currently on duty in
    Japan. It is hard on him and the boys as the amount of time they get
    to see each other is minimal.

    Even today the men and women of our armed forces sacrifice some part of
    the private lifes for us.

    This weekend, I drive with my lights on in honor of all those who serve
    and have served in the armed forces and in honor of those who gave
    their lives that my sons may grow up in a free country.

1014.5God Bless...PARITY::DDAVISLong-cool woman in a black dressThu May 24 1990 19:447
    This note is so emotional for me. I'm glad someone decided to enter
    it...I'm sitting here typing this with tears in my eyes.

    My thoughts and prayers are with all in the military who have made
    sacrifices and have given their lives to serve our country.

    Would someone explain driving with lights on? Sorry to sound naive,
    but I'm not familiar with this one.

    Judi, haven't you ever seen a funeral procession, with everyone's car
    headlights on?

    I think that's the reason ...

    Tammi

1014.8NETMAN::HUTCHINSI only read minds on February 30Fri May 25 1990 13:4214
    Yes, I *have* seen a funeral procession where people have their
    headlights on.

    My question was about having your headlights on to signify those
    remembered on Memorial Day. I'm not familiar with this, so I was
    asking about the practice.

    I understand the *why*...I'm looking for information on the *when*.
    This may sound like a dumb question, but does one have headlights on at
    a specific time on Memorial Day, or throughout the day (and yes, when
    required by law)

1014.9Midnight-noon, noon-midnightCSC32::K_JACKSONIt's going to be a great day when...Fri May 25 1990 14:2513
  Ususally it's during the A.M. Flags are also suppose to be at half-staff
all morning, then at 12:00 Noon, they get raised to full-staff. Lights go
off at noon but alot of people leave them on all day.

The sig. of this is that the first 12 hours of the day (Midnight-Noon)
are "in memory" of the fallen. The last 12 hours are for "honoring"
our heroes and our country.

Hope this helps.

    My grandfather, Robert Frederick Read, USN photographer with
    VF-6, USS Enterprise.

    Died during Japanese air attack, 24 August 1942, on "Big E",
    near Santa Cruz Is., in the Solomons, whilst photographing a
    Japanese bomb hit 50 yards from the gun tub in which he was standing;
    55 others died in that attack.

    The picture did turn out and was published in the newspapers of

    	I've seen that picture. In fact, I believe I have it in one of my
    WWII books. It's a phenomenal picture.

    re .12, your *grandfather* was in WWII? I would have thought your
    grandfather would have been too old to be in WWII? I would have
    thought your *father* would have been the age for WWII! (I guess
    the question is...how old are you anyhow?) !!! (I thought you were
    about 40 or so?)
