954.0. "English Divorce Question?" by SHAPES::GALVINS (Steven GALVIN @UCG, DTN:781-4393 :-)) Thu Jan 18 1990 08:02

    My mother-in-law is going through the tramua of deciding whether to
    leave her husband and get a divorce.

    She is very unsure about her legal position ( in England ), i.e. If she
    leaves her husband will she be entitled to half of the assets, or
    because she has left home will he be able to keep everything?

    Can anybody help?

    Thanks in advance

    Steven

I would imagine that the answer in England is the same as it would be in the
US, only the terminology is different. She should seek professional legal
counsel. Nothing you read here is guaranteed to be accurate. In the
US, the answer would differ from state to state.

I can add 0.5% of value.

Its certainly true that the man has to allow the woman to live in the
'family' home as long as she wants. Thus if she leaves this right is
given up. I am also sure that she can force the sale of the house
if a divorce is processed.

Only a little help ... Trevor
