850.0. "Renewal of Wedding Vows. What's the protocol?" by SALEM::ABATELLI (Nouveau Blues Rocker) Mon Sep 25 1989 12:40

*** NOTE: I've entered this for a good friend ***

It's funny how some things work out and seeing some of my friends
marrages go down the drain I feel lucky to have found the gal I
married 14 yrs ago. When we got married my wife's father couldn't
make the wedding (he divorced my wife's mother in 1966). Now whether
he couldn't make it, or afraid to make it is history, but this past
weekend my wife and I attended a auction at our church (for the fun of
it) and one of the things autioned off was a renewal of marrage vows.
My wife and I just looked at each other and said why not? We were
the only ones to bid on it too!
My question? Has anyone gone through this? We can't afford a
*BIG* wedding reception and wanted to keep it family only. We didn't
want people to bring presents and stuff, we just wanted to get all
our families together at least once and thought this might be the
way to do it. My wife's father has never met my family because he
lives on the westcoast and the timing was never right. Ofcourse
family isn't the only reason, we wanted to do it also, we thought
of it as a new beginning for us. Maybe we can be more focused now.
We have two children and they're excited about it.

Any ideas from people that have gone through this? We want to
keep it simple, plus the fact that the money isn't there either.
Also my parents are in their late 70's and thought it best not to
wait till 25 yrs have gone by.

    Ideas? Opinions?

Sounds like a great idea: one I might emulate.

850.2How about this?DECSIM::TOTOColleenTue Sep 26 1989 10:457
Very nice idea. Lots of people don't get to do that sort of thing. If money
is limited, what you might think about is renew your vows and after the
wedding, have a brunch with family members only either at your house or at a
resturant. This wouldn't be all that expensive then for your friends, you
could just have a cook out maybe. The weather is still warm enough.....enjoy.

Funny that you posted this now! This weekend, I'm getting married
for the third time! Fortunately, I'm still married right now.
You guessed it...my wife and I are getting married again on Sunday.
We're going back to the spot where we first got married, and going
through the exact ceremony again. I think it will be nice.
No friends or family...just us. Then, we're taking our kids
and going out for a nice dinner.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Any time is special... I have some friends that renew their vows every
year. They've been married 14 years now and he says it keeps them
    feeling like newlyweds.

Skip, you ol' romantic you! :-)

Seriously tho...he's right...renewal of vows on any anniversary is
special. It doesn't have to be on a certain milestone...and if you'd
like to do it, then do it, don't wait til your 10th, or even your 5th.
