736.0. "Wrestling, is it real?" by SSDEVO::NGUYEN () Tue Apr 11 1989 17:36

As frivolous as it may sound, I've got to ask people out there.
Occasionally I watch wrestling on tv (CBS); I wonder if they are
real. My friend told me that they earn million dollars when they
win. If they win that much money then it must be real, but it looks
so fake to me. If it is true, with all slamming and punching, those
guys would be dead by now, and how can they get so big like that?

    What do you think?

    Thanks in advance

If it were real, it would be illegal!!

Yes, it is fake, but i'm also sure those guys do take quite
a pounding what with all the slamming around and mistakes that
must happen....and any blood you see is usually when they
    cut themselves.
And from what i hear, they do make quite a bit of money.

Ever notice when the wrestling show comes on that they call it
"Sports entertainment" and not "sports"? The WWF (I think) was in court recently
and had to state that the outcome of the matches is known a long time before the
actual fight. This makes it 'fake' or 'fixed' but, believe me, there is still
allot of physical ability needed to put on 'the show'.

736.4Mass psychotherapy?ELESYS::JASNIEWSKIWe're part of the fire that is burning!Wed Apr 12 1989 11:5123

Big Time Wrestling, believe it or not, is a form of mass-psychotherapy.
I seem to recall hearing a story about a guy who got his Phd in
Psychology with this as his thesis topic. He was of a large physical
build, and played the part of "the bad guy" (You know how the
characters seem to "turn" over the years) in a wrestling arena,
in a location where the wrestling was televised.

His claim was that by playing a character which everyone hated,
he could draw out people's negative emotions! All the hootin' and hollerin'
that goes on at these "shows" is good for people to get out of their
systems, as expressing an emotion or feeling is always better than
"stuffing" it. Since it was televised, and considering the crowd at the
arena, his "character" did this for multitudes of people at the same
time. He could personally "treat" many people all at once playing
    his role.

So, you come to find out that *all* the wrestling people are really a
bunch of psychiatrists who just practice their art a bit differently!

    	Who knows?

736.5What do you mean it's not real!?WOODRO::OLSONYo mama say you ugly and you are Heh!Wed Apr 12 1989 14:5619
Yes, professional wrestling is fake! However, it is the MOST attended
sports "Entertainment" in the world. I believe it was Wrestlemania
III at the Pontiac Silverdome that had an attendance of 93,000.
Try to find a real good seat at the Boston Garden when Hulk Hogan
    is there!

You will also find it interesting that ALL the wrestlers go through
a school to learn how NOT to hurt themselves when they fall or have
a move put on the, and to wrestle. The matches are all choreographed,
some better than others, and the outcome IS known well in advance.
And NO, the blood is never their own anymore! They stopped that years
    ago.

SOME people find it very entertaining! Just get someone who hates
it and make them watch it or follow it for a month or so and they'll
get the "Hook" just like the rest of us.

RE: .3, the case in point was New Jersey, where the state wanted
Wrestling to fall under the same regulations as Boxing by the Athletic
Commission. The Wrestling spokesman said it was "Entertainment" rather
than "Sport", so this wouldn't happen (and "fixing outcomes" could
    continue).

I occasionally kind of like it for a couple of reasons. First,
there are always some characters in the crowd who are acting out
in the most outrageous ways. Second, where else can you regularly
see live stunt work of such a caliber? I mean, look at some of
those gags they pull. . .didya ever try any of that stuff? I
and some former roommates used to and it ain't easy (nor, for
that matter, is The Three Stooges "Three High-Low" stunt, which
we also tried, but that's a different story).

What a joke!!! If you could manage to watch it for a month
you'd more likely be ready for the funny farm. ;^)

How the heck can anyone say that is any kind of sport?
Entertainment?, I'd think there would more entertainment
value in watching a common house fly caught in a spiders
    	web!!!!!

All this is of course IMO

Wrestlemania has given real wrestling a bad name.

RE: .9, as for characters in the audience, you should have seen my 80
year old grandmother at a wrestling show! You wouldn't believe the
language from a "little old lady" (my mother would often threaten to
refuse to let me watch wrestling on TV as a child when my grandmother
was in the room because of the language she used [ :-) ])

I read the WRESTLING Note files, and I am glad I didnot enter my
    note there.
I watch the matches sometimes. How do they win the match, the referee
only count to three? And I see that the looser can still strike
back if he has more time. I also watch the woman match, and don't
like it at all for they are really really fake (no pun intended)
What do you think about the female wrestlers?

    1)	You never see *good guys* fighting *good guys*.

    2)	Usually, *bad* appears to be wasting *good*... only to have
*good* make a last minute comeback.

    3)	Watch when they *stomp* each other, how they jump down on the
supporting foot, making a lot of noise.

    4)	Watch how when they start throwing a punch to the face, how
they often drop down to the chest.

    5)	But mostly.... watch Miss Elizabeth! Isn't she a fox!!!

Actually, "Miss Elizabeth" is already married to "Macho Man". In real life,
that is - according to the WWF, the "characters" aren't married. Makes you
realize just how much "entertainment" this is.... (This information was
from a newspaper column.)

736.21Great entertainment?CADSYS::RICHARDSONFri Apr 14 1989 16:5716
My father (who actually did like to watch TV, especially sports - the
only TV fan in the family!) used to call pro wrestling "wrassling",
since he was positive it was all rigged. Amateur wrestling, which was
very big in Iowa where I was born (especially college wrestling) he
believed was for real. I don't partake, myself. College wrestling was
so popular in the town I lived in that you could tell when the
commercial breaks were in the program on TV if you were on the town
water commission (as my father was) because of the high water usage
then! Dad used to say that half of the town went to get a snack during
the commercials, and the other half went to the bathroom!

If you want to watch really strange rigged "sports", try to figure out
a roller derby sometime! Best left for when you are home with the flu
or something, otherwise you are really wasting your time! Or watch
mud wrestling... Better yet, do something else instead!

Yes, professional wrestling is real, but I never watch these matches.
They are too cruel. On the other hand, they are much less cruel
than shows like _Dynasty_. One hour of those is enough to turn
my brain into uh, you know what.... My favorate show is HeeHaw
(sp?). Now I know what's in your mind..., but the show is actually very
    presidential (just ask George Bush).
