648.0. "The Perfect Figure?" by VAXWRK::CONNOR (We are amused) Tue Jan 03 1989 17:09

There was a short item in the newspaper in which a fitness
expert (cant remember the name) said that the Duchess of
York has the figure that 99% of the women would envy. Is this
true? Would you like or admire (men) a full Fregie figure?

I'm not a man, but speaking as a woman, I'd rather look in the mirror
and see Di looking back at me, than Fergie!!!

If 99% of all men in the world wanted "their" women to look like
Fergie, there would be no Weight Watchers, no jogging, no weight
lifting for women, no Christy Brinkley or Brooke Shields, and I'd
go out and have 3 banana splits and 4 lbs. of chocolates after work
    today.

Do you think it's true that 99% of all men wish they looked like
    Danny Devito?

I tend to agree w/ 0.4: "beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

It's more important that Fergie makes the most of what she has by
exercising and taking good care of herself. Even if she doesn't
end up becoming ANYONE'S idea of "the perfect 10", at least she
knows that she is taking good care of her body.

If someone were to ask....whom would you rather be: Princess Diana
or Sarah, Duchess of York (figures included), I would undoubtedly
say Sarah. There is more to life than being skin and bones and
I'd say that the life of Diana since becoming a Princess is proof.
I'm not sure I would like the life of either...but I'd be willing
to try :-) I wonder if Prince Edward likes older women ;-)

Not to change the subject, but do you think people would be happier
if society would quit projecting the idea of how everyone should
look? (Of course if this was to happen tanning salons, beauty
parlors, makeup counters, health spas, diet centers, and such would
    go out of business.)

I one had the figure most guys like in a gal. I went from a 11/12
to a 5/6 and when I went to my doctor for a checkup I ws told either
I start gaining some weight back or in five days I would find myself
in the hospital on a weight gain program.
Today my doctors have told me i look better than I have in the
6 years I have been with them. today I am as heavy as I was when
I WAS 9 months pregnant, but I am so happy and feelso healthy.
My boyfriend says skinny was nicebut he had nothing to hang onto.
nad he says I'm not fat just fluffy and as long as my docotrs say
I'm healthyand have nothing to worry about then he's not going to
    worry about my weight either.

I was under the impression that what type figure's are "in" changes
with time; I've heard that it wasnt until 1963 (advent_of_twiggy) that
the "sliced thin" figures became all the rage or whatever -

A couple of hundred years ago, f -er- plump figures were the
most desirable. They reflected the general well-being and economic
status of the individual, because most "thin" people of that time
were that way resulting from being poor and consequently malnurished!

Personally, I like "firm", which is an attribute that can exist
    independantly from the "fat/skinny" generalization.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone both have perfect figures.
Their faces aren't as cute as some, Mel Gibson or Dennis Quaid,
for example, most of their movies stink and Arnold's politics s**k,
but their bodies are very perfect. Unfortunately, I haven't seen
any more men walking around DEC who are build like them than I have
women who are built like Jessica Rabbit or Loni Anderson. Most
    of us just aren't perfect.

Just wondering if you realize the effort that goes into the
Arnold/Rambo physique. Years of intense training to bulk up,
and months of tougher training, and strict dieting to peak for
a movie. All with the help of profesional trainers/nutritionists.
Many people are born with the genetic potentiel for a rambo figure,
but nobody will attain it without the effort. This is why you don't
see too many of that type cruising the halls of DEC.

Did you ever see pictures of Stallone in the x-rated stage of his

I've started dieting AND weight training with a former Mr. NH and
a few others. To get to the point that these guys have w/o steroids
takes tremendous effort. 3-6 Hours a day, 7 days a week, pushing
free weight until the muscles actually burn from oxygenated blood
flow. I've been at it for three weeks and I still have a tire around
my middle, but I can actually feel the difference in my arms, chest,
and legs already. I don't know how far I want to carry this. I don't
want to dedicate 12-15 hours a week to a self adoration regieme.

The diet is harder to stick to. A year and half ago I lost 35 lbs
in 6 six weeks on the nutri-system plan but as soon as I went off
their food I started gaining it back.

So what am I saying? Once you find the you that you like and want,
you'll do what you have to in order to keep that you. The important
thing that I've discovered is that I like me, regardless of the
packaging and so do my wife and kids........that's important!!!

I wouldn't know who has *more* fun, because I've never been a brunette
or a redhead (unless you want to count that flaming fuschia streak
that I've had in varying degrees over the last 5 years) but I
am a blonde (naturally "boring blonde" currently "artificially
jazzed-up" blonde) and I know I have a *lot* of fun!

I almost was a redhead once, I got the urge to dye my a burgundy
magenta color, but my hairdresser talked me out of it.

Blondes with deep tans simply melt me! And.... spring and summer
is moving in!!!! Can't wait to lie around the pool! That's the
great thing about working third shift... I have all day to soak
up the sun and check out the scenery!

    No tans for me, thanks.

Maybe a little healthy color so I know it's summer, but I stay
    OUT of the sun.

I am doing a little experiment, a "bet" with my friends.
They bake at the beach all summer, visit the tanning beds all
winter. They think they look great. Maybe now they do...
Not me, I stay out of the sun and take care of my skin.
We'll wait and see who looks the best at 40!!

I'm 21 now but don't plan to physically age past 35.
(I want to die when I'm real old. When people see my obituary
and find out I was 99 or something, I want them to say "Hot damn!
That Dilly has been saying she was 35, but I knew she was bluffing.
I thought maybe she was about 42!"

Time will tell. Pale skin is in!

Those babes with tans are going to have leather faces in 10
years if they don't already. I stopped laying out last year
    	because I don't want to look like a raisin when I'm 30.

I grew up on the beach. I have been a "beach blanket bunny" way,
way back in the stone age. I was ALWAYS in the sun. I am well
past 30 and my skin does not look like a raisin, thank goodness.
I still sit in sun. I know it's bad, but I am blonde and I love
having a tan. I do not recommend this for everyone, I guess I am
    just lucky.

But I really think the artificial beach (tanning beds) are much worse
than the sun. The tanning beds can penetrate many more layers of skin
causing deeper skin damage than the sun. I'll take the real
    thing....that's bad enough.

RE: the last 3 or 4 notes.

From the author of "Blondes have more fun"..........

I'm from Colorado - where we lived closer to the sun. You can get
a tan all year around. Enjoying the sun in the summer by high
mountain lakes, and enjoying the sun in the winter (on a nice day)
while skiing down a mountain.....and I'm proud to be a part of the
    bikini skiing crowd.

I like getting a tan because I like being in the sun - I'm not 30
yet and have been working on a tan since my early teens, I'm not
dried up like a raisin and my skin is in great shape, although I
am aware of the problems down the road with too much sun exposure,
if done in moderation, I'm sure I'll be fine.

I now live in the mid-west within blocks of Lake Michigan (Wisconsin
side) where summertime is like living by the ocean - the tans run
rampid on the young and old - people look healthy and seem to really
    enjoy themselves in the sunshine.

I am a true blonde and also love being tan.

The worst part about a tan is tan lines. It always makes me think
of a custom paint job on a fancy sports car with a an unpainted
    strip running across the hood.

I agree - the sun can turn your skin into leather.

......but I'll enjoy it while I can and in the mean time
try to take a little caution.

Some people tan all their life and look great. Others "over-do" for their
skin type and look "weathered."

Some people never tan. Healthy or not, they may look weak, sickly, and
fragile. Some do, some don't.

Some people like the "pale" look. Others prefer some color to the skin.

Too much sun or tanning salon can be unhealthy. Depends on which doctor
report you read last. I use both. Have for years.

I've seen older folks with tans that look bad. I've seen older folks with no
"color" that look like they have died already. I've seen more older folks
without tans that look terrible, than the reverse. It all gets down to
personal likes.

For me, I prefer color in the skin. Most people do. Look at any beauty
contest, or any body building contest. A wo/man without a tan won't stand
a chance if s/he come in looking like Snow White.

Love those California girls....

When i lived in arizona i had a natural tan, now i have to
	 work at it.... 8^(

i feel healthier when my skin is tanned...i would much rather
take my risks and get a tan, than spend time outside with
white skin and burn--burning does much more damage to your
skin than a gradual tan ever will (at least in my book!)

With the ozone layer quickly be destroyed or depleted - perhaps
irreversibly during our lifetime, maybe tans or tanning will
eventually become a thing of the past. Unless artifically induced.

Getting back on track - my blonde, blue eyed scandihovian S.O.
has the the perfect figure. She works in MKO but I won't say
where just to keep the traffic down and not cause a stir.
