610.0. "It must have been the...." by QUARK::LIONEL (Ad Astra) Thu Oct 27 1988 15:39

Many of us have heard fanciful explanations of why someone "turned out
the way they did". For example, my mother attributes my fondness for
computers and electronics with the fact that I was born in the hospital
elevator, with all those buttons and lights.

Would anyone else like to share similar stories about themselves
    or others they know?

Well, I can state most definitely that my fear (terror?) of
lightning stems from the night that lightning hit a tree in
my parents yard, causing me (in my mother's womb) to jump.
I was born later that night, 2 weeks early. Now if only I
could explain my unreasonable fear (and nightmares about)
    of fire...

Many times my family has teased me about my passion for apple pie.
My mother had just finished making 3 apple pies for a supper my
father was working at when it was time for her to go to the hospital
    to have me.....

We all blame our fondness for staying up very late at night and
sleeping late in the morning on having Manter blood in us. (Manter
    is my mother's maiden name).

I thinbk the my inability to make a decision quickly is part due
to the fact that I am a Libra also, and that I turned over twice
in my mother's womb before I was born. Just couldn't decide if
    I wanted to be born.

I've never been much of a sun worshiper. My parents attribute that
to the fact that *they* were sunburned "at the time". Under those
circumstances, I'd say it was amazing that I'm even here.......

My love for skiing I attribute to the fact that my mother skied
until she was 7 months along with me! And my parents also met skiing
    some 40 years ago...

I hate fish. I remember eating it and liking it when I was a little pooter,
and then I hated it. My mother tells me I choked on a fishbone once and never
ate fish after that. I don't remember that happening at all, the brain has
a way of blocking unpleasant things out.

I also go crazy when someone puts their hands on my neck (even wearing a turtle
neck is a major chore). We figure it's because I flipped over before I was
born and got the umbilical cord wrapped around my neck. Damn near suffocated
on the way out. The lack of oxygen may explain a few other things but I won't
get into that ;-).

The fact that I'm "brilliant" is because I was born 2 weeks late.
It gave my brain more time to develop;-)

My mother has always told me that the fact that I am stubborn (to
the core!) is because she was in labor with me for 36 hours! I
REFUSED to be born on the last day of April!

well my oldest son is somewhat conservative about change
and new experiences (or at least he used to be) I always
felt this was a continuation of the events before he was
born. I started to go into labor and he turned around to
breech positon and refused to leave! I told him a year ago
this fall when he was having trouble getting off to college
that I was glad I didn't have to go through a C-section this
    time!

This note reminds me of two jokes I learned years ago..

"A woman says 'I don't believe in this prenatal influence business,
my mother broke a whole pile of phonograph records before I was
    born and

"it didn't affect me, affect me, affect me, affect me.'"

    The other one..

"I know a woman who read Oliver Twist, David Copperfield and
Tale of Two Cities, during her pregnancy.

After it was born the child was full of the Dickens."

I have been told that a large part of the reason that I tend to
be insecure is because of my spending 4 months at age 1 in the
hospital. While in a walker I pulled a pot of hot coffee(cord was
within reach) off the counter recieving 3rd degree burns over 40%
of my lower body. I couldent be touched except under absolute sterile
conditions. I have been told that at that age touching is very
important in development at that age to build/reenforce the
"i'm ok" feeling about ones self.

My folks lived in the Texas "valley" in a town called Harlingen
and I know my mother must have enjoyed the "hot" regional foods
during her pregnancy with me because I savor the flavor of hot, spicey
Mexican foods. Just writing about it is making me hungry for a
    taco!

My folks started to tell me. They got as far as "Well, Son, you've
no doubt heard of Murphy's law. . .at which point I stopped them.

Since I was adopted at the tender age of 5 months, the only prenatal influence
known to me is my racial background. (For some reason, they tracked this
stuff in the '50s.)

Even that much knowledge is enough to come up with the theory:
Scandinavian + Irish == Depressive Drinker

The circumstances of my birth also might be responsible for me being such
a bastard. (: >,)
