| hi Bob,
I've done the trainings and wouldn't trade the experience for
anything. The BASIC is 5 days of excitement, discovery, meeting
others, new experiences, and more than anything else fun...
If you have any questions feel free to give me a call at
dtn 261-3636 or 508-937-1983. Also I suggest that you take in a
guest event, this is a chance for you to meet other grad, ask
questions, get your questions answered, and experience a few of
the activities that happen in the training.

The trainers do indeed refer to it as "life training"...
The training is about commitments to accomplishment, in
interpersonal relations, in professional life... It's about
taking action, for, without action, no accomplishment is
possible.
(from the course brochure)
___________________________________________________________________
About 50% of the course time you will particpate in excersizes
designed to exhibit, experientially, your assumptions and actions
about fundamental human issues. These excersizes include role playing,
visualizing and acting on a prescribed scenario, and supporting
the actions of others. Sometimes you will be interacting with one
other person, other times with several, and occaisionally with the
entire group.
About 25% of the course time participants relate their experiances
to the rest of the group. While sharing is voluntary, it is highly
recommended. You can produce clarity regarding your actions, by
discovering and articulating how your experience arises out of the
way you live your life. From that, new possibilities for effective
action emerge.
During the remainder of the course time, the trainer will present
short lectures that will provide a framework for understanding
and interpreting the possibilities you generated through the
excersizes and sharing. These lectures will address shared human
concerns central to your life, such as the nature of communication,
committment, freedom, and responsibility
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just speaking for myself... The course showed me specific areas
in my life where my "zone of comfort" and ingrained ways of reacting
to people and situations were limiting my perceptions of what is
possible for me to accomplish. One excersize, for example showed
how I was willing to let someone else take leadership, while I was
willing to sit in the back taking potshots. I didn't even realize
I was doing this in many areas of my life... How many times does
such a situation arise at DEC...? Probably more often than we would
care to admit....
"Committment", "doing", "breakthroughs", and "taking responsibility" are
central concepts and are mentioned frequently. The training is in
support of what the individual student considers important. Students
are challenged to make and meet committments on the things in their
lives they deem important, whether it a relationship, profession,
religion...
I think the most important thing I got from the training was the
sense that I was really responsible for how my life is going...if
I wanted changes I would have to find ways to make the changes happen;
that noone was going to do this for me. The moment I accepted and
realized this was a moment of great power for me... Also, I created
deep bonds of trust with the other students. Having felt isolated
for most of my life, it was a revelation to me to realize how good
people actually are when they are showing themselves as their
no-pretense, authentic selves.
Misc:
LS is a for-profit, tax-paying corporation. The trainers are not
necessarily psychiatrists or psychologists (although most of the
trainers have graduate work in psychology). It is for people who
want to examine themselves and find new tools with which to manage
their lives. It is *NOT* therapy. They will tell you on Day One
of the training that for therapy, you should see a therapist. Therapy
is not what LS is about. LS is about experiencing and stepping back,
and viewing oneself as others might see you.
